Amazing food, quality Italian ambiance and service. We loved their wine recommendations. Not great for huge groups of people, but perfect for date night or a double date!!
I've eaten here a number of times over the years, and the food is always great. From a simple linguini agile e olio, to the seafood risotto, everything is fresh and tasty. Most recently, I had a dish of very fresh halibut, accompanied by a serving of escarole, with antipasto of calamari and cannellini beans. With the cozy, homey ambiance, and the hospitality of Mario & Stephanie (the owners), one feels like a dinner guest in their home, not merely a customer at the restaurant. The wine list is ample yet not overwhelming, and has entries for individual glasses, moderately-priced bottles, and premium bottles, for that occasional splurge. The location is a few blocks from the more tourist-oriented zone, but well worth the detour.
I have been coming here for over 25 years and the limoncello cake is the bomb! My friends and I shared the following: the creamy mozzarella and arugula salad, followed by the eggplant parmigiana, linguine di mare and then the porchetta. We also shared a slice of the limoncello cake and the panna cotte with persimmons. I would come just for the limoncello cake but the food and the people have always been great. It is a not so hidden gem at the edge of FiDi/Chinatown/Little Italy. However, the owner, Mario, is thinking of retiring so better enjoy this while it lasts.
They have never disappointed us! We've been going to Cafe Macaroni off and on for about 6 years now. We haven't been able to go for about 2 years now and it's like seeing an old friend. Great food and great service!
Caffe Macaroni reminds me of the small mom and pop Italian North Beach restaurants I remember from the 1970's. The cafe is quirky, very red, and decorated in a whimsical manner. The restaurant is very tiny. We sat upstairs and we both ducked our heads. This area is intimate and cozy. You become quick friends with whoever you are seated by. The fennel and orange salad was outstanding. My husband had the tricolor salad which was also super delicious. I had the halibut on eggplant and my husband had the pork dish. The eggplant was sublime. The halibut didn't taste as fresh as I had hoped and my husband felt the same way about the pork. I side of "pizzaola" pasta was as good as my husband's Italian grandma made from scratch.
Limoncello cake split for dessert. Vermentino wine quite good. We will return.
We had a reservation for 7:15 on Valentine’s Day. The restaurant was way too crowded, and we were not seated until 7:50. We did not receive drinks until 8:15, nor food until 8:30. The food ended up being good, but the wait kind of killed the mood.
Caffe Macaroni is always outstanding. The food in this tiny place is the best italian you will find in San Francisco and the atmosphere is always intimate and unique. Great place for a date, to take out of town friends or business associates, it never fails to impress.
Interier very crouded
Adorable place with excellent food. Particularly enjoyed the black pasta with mussels, clams, shrimp, and calamari. My friend had tuna and that was good too. Suggest reservations because the place is tiny.
Really great food!
We were seated in the bottom floor and heard that the top floor was the place to be! next time ill have to request it
Basic Italian food with a flair. Pasta done nicely. Seating a little too cozy being quite close to next party
I like the quirky nature of this place, it's very small intimate but consistently good from a chef in an open kitchen cooking fresh food with specials daily.
Value for money, fun and seriously Italian
Great local neighborhood place with real Italian food, wine and hospitality!
Mario and Stephanie are the absolute best. The food is excellent and they always make you feel like you are part of the family.
A small but mighty Caffe! Authentic flavors made with love!
They were closed and no one called or told us that our reservation was not set.
We come to Caffe M every time we are in town. Love everything about about it!
Great, cozy place! We had the meatballs and the seafood linguine. Both were amazing. It would be hard to have more than 4 or so people, and a reservation is highly recommended. Especially if you must sit inside. But very cute and cozy. Great for a rainy December day!
Our favorite neighborhood place when we are in the City. Tiny but great food and service.
Delicious food, wonderful wait staff and an authentic North Beach experience. The black squid ink pasta seafood special was excellent. Very small restaurant that encourages you to talk to nearby tables; if that's ok with you, it'll be a good time.
We had a very enjoyable meal at Cafe Macaroni. The service was excellent as well as the food. The atmosphere was very friendly and relaxing.
I always enjoy cafe macaroni. If you are claustrophobic then this is not the place for you. I think it’s part of the charm. Food is always great
Caffe Macaroni is a delightful restaurant. Cozy in all the best ways. They know their food and cook it just like you were in a grandma's kitchen.
Very tiny but cute restaurant. Both food and service were excellent! I would definitely go back.
the food was amazing. brings me back to my childhood. finally have found a best italian food in the city! highly recommended
Everything was excellent; food, service, fellow patrons. Next time we’ll request the main dining room instead of the upstairs though.
Owners Mario and stefania are the real thing. They provide authentic Napolitano cuisine. Even the menu is written in Napoletano dialect.
Best Italian food we have had in San Francisco. Small and intimate place
Great owner, excellent service, fish a bit salty for my taste. Would return though.
Fabulous family run, tiny, authentic, delicious! Can't wait to go again, I reccomend the pasta with venison ragu if they have it
Wonderful memories of everything about Caffe Macaroni from years of being able to just drop in after work or at lunch. Now it's a destination choice for us but just as charming and delicious as previously. Mario and the fellows that back him up are just great.
Recently there was an article circulating about the sad state of affairs for restaurants in SF -- just based upon how busy Caffe Macaroni was from 5:30p to 7p -- clearly they've risen above the fray!
A happy happy place!
My favorite spot to get together with friends - great food and service!
This is my neighborhood go-to restaurant. I’ve been here dozens of times. It never disappoints.
Delicious food, excellent service! Highly recommend.
We had a garlic bread dish, seafood (Linguini di mar), boar (Rugu di cinchiale con pappardelle) paired with a great wine (Scarpeli) and Peroni.
Attentive service. A local gem.
If you want a quieter experience, ask to sit upstairs. If you want to be in the heart of things, ask for upstairs or the sidewalk.
We love Caffe Macaroni. It is best to make reservations as it is such a small little place. I would suggest that you not waste your money on the glasses of wine (go for a bottle or no wine at all) as it is really poor quality. Perhaps the worst wine I've ever had. But the food is absolutely delicious!
Great Italian food in a low key environment. Great Value and great service.
The proprietor (Mario) knows what he is doing. Didn't need a menu. He suggested the perfect pairing for the Barbara we were enjoying. Please support this AWESOME bit of S.F. culture!
Mario the chef's Neapolitan food is spectacular: many Napolitan' specials like shellfish risotto, baby octopus pasta, and various fresh -- very fresh -- fish combinations, several with pasta and Calabrian chilli pepper. Also, he somehow gets calamari so fresh that it melts in your mouth served as an antipasto with white beans, lightly sauteed (not deep fried!). And some of the dessert cakes are made by patronne Stephanie, are fabulous. I sound like an advertisement, but I'm just a regular local patron who thinks Caffe Macaroni is a treasure.
We come here every time we come to SF. The food is fantastic and the wait staff superb.
