Char Steakhouse - Putnam Valley

We have been here many times and have always liked the food. However not this time. I ordered the filet and it was delicious and cooked perfectly. My husband ordered the prime rib and it tasted like it was a leftover that was reheated. That would have been bad enough but we were charged a premium price for it. I would have sent it back but my husband didn’t want to. I guess at place can have an off night, but a steakhouse serving bad prime rib?

Waited a very long time for our appetizers to come - over 30 minutes. Both my daughter and husband ordered the 6oz filet but seemed much smaller when came out. It was cooked medium rare so shouldn’t have shrunk that much. Charged $2 extra for sautéed spinach which was watery and bland. I had the coconut crusted mahi mahi and it was way over breaded. Vegetables were steamed and had no flavor. Overall very disappointed in the experience.

Food is excellent and menu has something for everyone! The drinks were festive and delicious. Our waitress nicki was exceptional with customer service and you are treated like family when you eat at char. Every time I go there, the food, service and drinks are perfect. Totally recommend this spot!

HVRW menu was excellent from Brussels with buratta to filet mignon with shrimp to cheesecake for desert . All courses excellent and prepared as ordered . The only glitch was the service somewhat spotty had to ask other servers for assistance .

The food was fantastic, especially the steaks - melt in your mouth. We've been to Char before and found the ambiance welcoming and the staff very friendly. This time the staff was still very friendly and accommodating, however, they gave away our reserved table; we arrived 15 minutes late but i did answer their emails/texts confirming we were coming. The table they ended up giving us was from the outdoor patio with folding chairs and it was crammed in with the regular tables.So, the ambiance cannot be rated well this go round. Still, this place is worth a try - and a retry!

We love going to Char. Nikki is great and always checked in to see if we needed anything. Food was really good.

Char steakhouse is an excellent family restaurant and the menu during restaurant week is also excellent!!

We have been to the Char restaurant numerous times, we meet friends there because it’s off the Taconic. Previous times, the crowds,noise,and parking were terrible but this last time it was intolerable.
We had reservations for 6:30. Our party of 4 was on time but there was no parking and we had to park across the street, crossing a very busy road in the dark. We arrived to a very noisy restaurant, unable to have a conversation with our dining partners. Fortunately, our table, a booth, was available and the waiter was quick with our drink order.
There was slower service with the rest of the order and that would have been ok if my food had arrived hot.
I returned it and it was returned with the same temperature. Our waiter did come over to ask if it was ok n I honestly told him it’s the same temperature but I ate it because ,by then, of course, I’m very hungry.
We were very disappointed in this dining experience. And PS... we didn’t know it was restaurant week...and we did order from this menu. Our waiter should have told us ahead of time that there were some eliminations so we could have altered our decisions and perhaps order off the regular menu.

The food is always great here. This is the 2nd time I went on a Tuesday and both times the noise level has been extremely loud. Not my favorite during a nice dinner but the food was worth it. I'll have to try a different night next time. The staff is always friendly and attentive.

We think Augie’s is going a bit down hill. Cutting corners and the owner has never once looked our way or been cordial to us. We thought we would try Char to compare. It’s not up to Augie’s although the prices were. They need some serious attention to their dining room decide. A coat of paint would be a good start. The King prime rib was good, salad bar wasn’t very exciting. I’ll still be looking but Michael was a very attentive server and took good care of us.

Menu is better with the new owners. More choices for the prix fix. Definitely a good deal and meal

First time diners at Char and we will be back! Grt food, wine, waitstaff and just quiet enough for our party of 4. 26 day aged steak, salmon and a veggie plate for one vegetarian in our party— all good. Very enjoyable evening.

Overall quite good. Saturday night crowds. Service bit slow. One appetizer did not come out. Nice ambiance and fairly good overall offer in neighborhood.

Birthday dinner

Dinner was delicious and service was on point.I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

We had a great dinner!! There were 3 of us. We had for appetizers the slab bacon, the house salad and the fried calamari and they were all very good. For mains we had the char burger, chicken martini and zuppa de pesci. Everyone enjoyed their food. Our server was Michael. He was friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu. He kept our water glasses refilled without our having to ask. It was a perfect experience!!

I would recommend Char for outstanding meal (steak & seafood) . Service and staff are excellent. Noise level is high!!!!!

Food was good. Server was friendly and attentive. Had prime rib special. Meat was very tender. Mash potatoes creamy but way too much salt, also the mushrooms. This is a great place to celebrate any occasion. Congratulations on continuing to produce a good product
