Clay Oven Indian Restaurant - West Portal
We have been going to this restaurant really good food excellent food
Well prepared food. Good ambience. We had a 6:15pm reservation. Only one table occupied besides ours. Good time to go and get excellent service.
Had great fish and lamb tandoori. The fish pakoras were awesome!
We were the only people dining, at 4:30pm. It’s an early dinner after seeing movie at the Neighborhood theater. Overall the decor and food was good.
Our food was very good & tasty. Our entrees didn't include rice and we didn't know that until the food was delivered. However, the waiter brought us rice quickly after we ordered it. Our water glasses were refilled without delay. We would definitely return.
Food was tasty. Service was average and sometimes slightly below. Showed up for reservation but table wasn't ready for another 10 minutes. Ordered an appetizer but when it didn't come after 15 minutes, we asked about it. Server ended up adding another order to our bill. The appetizer came out with our main courses also. We ordered everything mild but one of our dishes was quite spicy. Again, the food here has been consistently tasty. Just wish they would acknowledge their mistakes when they pointed out. Most good restaurants will do something for these mis-steps. It could be something as trivial as comping an appetizer or dessert. Anything to acknowledge the mistake. I'll still re-visit this place because of the quality of the food. Prices are slightly above average for this type of food. Restaurant is clean and modern.
We were there for Thanksgiving, and it was great for the family. As fans of Indian food, we thought it was excellent.
Their tandoor dishes are outstanding. Excellent portions and very friendly staff.
Nothing blew me away, but if you're looking for a quick bite with decent food at cheap prices - recommended.
Good food. Good music. Good service.
When we went there was one waiter..he was swamped. Not sure why it was understaffed..the night before Mother's day would be busy. He was rushed and basically had to throw the food at us. My saag paneer was so spicy I could not eat it...I order Saag alot and have never had it that spicy..I had asked the waiter for mild. My friend enjoyed her meal, but both of us agreed the service was rushed and frenetic.
Great traditional “British Indian” food at a fair price
Great food and service. Will definitely return again
The lunch buffet is one of the best bargain all you can eat options in SF. Food quality is top notch and white tablecloths and fresh roses are a nice touch.
Decent, though not spectacular Indian food. The place is a bit of an 80s time warp, from the decor to the food - not in a bad way, but it is a throwback. The food was tasty, but a little bland and I've eaten better versions of each of the dishes. But it's not bad, and there were a few that were very good - the Tandoori Salmon for example. Rather abrupt and random service, but again not bad, just not particularly good. As long as your expectations aren't high, you'll get a reasonable meal for a reasonable price.
Great neighborhood gem - fabulous service and food
This was a great place mid-way between Marin and Palo Alto for a lunch with a friend. Their lunch buffet was ample, delicious and reasonably priced.
The restaurant has very good food, with a nice selection of both vegetarian and meat dishes. It is also quiet enough that it is easy to have a conversation with friends. It's accessible by Muni Metro and has convenient shopping and entertainment options nearby.
The food at this place is always good. The service is always somewhat lackluster. Same experience again this time. I will go back, because it's my neighborhood. And the food is really good.
India Clay Oven is a very friendly and convenient place to meet friends for a meal. The food is delicious, the staff is very welcoming. And there is plenty of parking at this end of West Portal.
My family and I have dined here many times. They are always reliable. Good food-I love the chicken korma and mango lassi. Yes, I would recommend this restaurant. I want to try their lunch buffet, which I haven't had a chance to yet, but my wife has and said it was quite good.
Excellent tandoor and nan. My family and friends love this place for excellent Indian food.
Love the service and the food. Reasonable prices
Appreciated a lovely neighborhood restaurant being open and giving good service on Christmas Eve. They had an especially delicious Saag Paner.
Clay Oven on West Portal is a neighborhood treasure. We live in the neighborhood and go a few times a year, especially when out of town guests want to try food not readily available where they live. Clay Oven never disappoints!
Location and food would make this place a spot I would return to, however the service was so poor I probably won't. It seemed like the wait staff was in a big hurry yet the restaurant wasn't that full and there is a buffet for those who want that option.
Excellent!!!!! Everything was great, food and service. I asked no oil or salt. I got that. I can't ask for anymore. Will be back.
Excellent food and service. Tandoor dishes are amazing!
I love the location, easy parking, nice size restaurant and great service and food
A great prefix for two people. Not expensive, and delicious.
We have been coming to this restaurant since it opened and it has grown to a really good place that we can come or bring our friends knowing that we will always consistently get excellent food and service. Food is hot and authentic, but not oily or greasy. Its very, very good.
Overall, I always have a good experience here. This past time, it seemed the waiters were v
Clay Oven West Portal provides a wide selection of Indian food in a comfortable setting with white tablecloths and candles the tables. The Tandoori chicken is outstanding. If you have three people, a single rice order is likely to suffice (unless you are teenage boys!).
A couple at our table asked for mild and got what I considered moderately spicy food. The waiter did bring something milder on request for these folks, but still a bit too spicy for them. However, one shouldn't go to an Indian restaurant unless one wants food with some bite.
The atmosphere is very nice. The wait staff is very attentive. Great spot for a quiet dinner when you want to talk. It isn't too noisy. Food is very good. I had the chicken korma and a mango lassi. Very enjoyable. I've eaten here many times with my family. Reliable.
My wife and I shared a cucumber salad, which was just sliced cucumbers and some tomatoes, with what appeared to be a bottled salad dressing on the side. I had the garlic naan, and it was a bit chewy. We each had tandori chicken, and it was very tasty, although they didn't bring the dipping sauces until we were almost through with the meal. The service was not very good. It took a long time to give our order and a long time to get it. The prices were extremely reasonable. It's worth a try if you like Indian food.
We live in the neighborhood, and this is our go-to spot for Indian food. We love it. The staff are always very accommodating, the food is excellent, and if you care for wine, it is available.
We went as a group of six with a toddler after visiting the SF Zoo. They didn't have crayons for the little one but were otherwise completely accommodating even though the atmosphere is somewhat fancy. The pakora to start was delicious. The saag paneer is always my test dish for a restaurant and it was excellent here -- creamy and spicy. Their medium spicy is definitely spicy! Would recommend to others.
Our first visit was impressive. The service was fine, but the food was better than my wife and I expected. She was impressed by the leaness of the lamb. I found the spices comfortably warm. The servings are large and we had an excellent repeat of the meal the next day for lunch. Will have to check Clay Oven again and compare to Roti, but Clay Oven is definitely an anticipated destination for us in the future.
Neighborhood gem, come here all the time for the great lunch buffet, dinner and late night feasts! Super friendly and attentive staff! Solid menu! A tad pricey for dinner but quality of food makes it worthwhile!! Try the garlic naan, the chicken tikka and the prawn saag! Outstanding! Ditto for the coconut ice cream!! Namaste!
