Colombini Italian Cafe & Bistro - Nob Hill Hotel
Kleines Restaurant, sehr gutes Essen.
Sehr gutes Essen!
Ok, so the food was very authentic and delicious. The place itself was...well..."odd" is the only word I can think of. The ambience and decor is a strange mix of super-casual pizzeria (particularly the cheap-looking tables and chairs) and funky, family-owned bistro one might find in Italy. When we arrived for our 7:30 Saturday night reservation, there was only one other couple there. Yet when a woman walked in shortly after us and asked if they could seat a party of 4 (mind you, the place had at least 6 empty tables, all set), she was actually turned away because she didn't have a reservation. (I guess the gentleman who runs the place, who was also our waiter and is probably the owner - an older Italian man - really doesn't have much interest in making money. Because once the other couple left, it was just my boyfriend and I in the place until we left around 9.) And there were only 3 people on staff; the older gentleman, a woman who I'm guessing was his wife, and one other other person we could see usually working in the kitchen. Yet despite the place being virtually empty, getting the attention of anyone was extremely difficult. The couple, and occasionally the kitchen worker, would stand being the counter talking, and almost never look our way.
The menu was very short, and 2 of the items on it that we tried to order were actually "not available". (Nor was the bottle of sparkling wine I tried to order because it was my birthday.) Yet the pasta I ended up ordering was freshly made in-house and was delicious. As was the warm, homemade bread. And the prosecco I ended up with (the only other sparkling wine on the menu, and usually not my favorite because it tends to run sweet) was actually not half-bad.
Bottom line: Go for authentic, delicious homemade pasta, but be prepared to leave your expectations of a fancy Nob Hill bistro with excellent service at the door.
The restaurant was closed and I ended up having to go elsewhere to eat. Neither OpenTable and Apple Maps showed that they were closed. It would have been really nice to know that it was closed beforehand.
We made a reservation, got there, and they had obviously been closed all day.
Great spot we found by chance. Ray was fantastic and the food is excellent. We tried many items. All were different and full of flavor. Thank you!
A great find Lovely bistro style restaurant with a great menu of Italian dishes especially under these difficult times.
Nothing was too much trouble and we were made to feel welcome
Would return when next staying in San Francisco
This is a lovely small place with wonderful food and a welcoming atmosphere. It was quiet enough for us to enjoy our conversation and we were very grateful for that.
Very enjoyable. Owner suggested a wine substitution (out of Chianti we wanted )that we didn’t enjoy and he didn’t charge us! Food was great. atmosphere very much like being in Italy, cozy, and small. Will return.
Quiet, quaint and nice low lighting. The crab bisque is to die for!!! Portions are plentiful and the owner who waited our table was funny and delightful.
Great cozy European ambiance.
The food was outstanding. Our waiter explained the wine and picked out an nice Chianti for the meal. The place is cute and quaint. Felt like being in Italy. And great value.
This is a fabulous, charming, lovely place! Amazing food and ambiance! :)
The food and atmosphere were great. But menu is limited and no bar service. Wine and beer only, which was rather disappointing for those of us who like a cocktail before dinner. All in all, nice evening.
The food is really good at Colombini . . . I enjoyed an amazing house made papardelli there. The problem lies in the service: for a small space with a limited number of guests, it is difficult to get the servers attention. We are not a demanding couple, but the server’s casual attitude and hands off approach left us stressed. I want to go back for the food but wish the service would improve.
Always a wonderful Italian meal. Great ambiance and service.
The food was just ok. In a city with hundreds of excellent italian restaurants there really is no reason to go to one that is just ok, although the staff was friendly, the service attentive, and the atmosphere intimate.
Amazing food, great vibe but nothing fancy. Excellent value for money. Fabulous for a special occasion .
Cozy and intimate, this small bistro invited us to relax completely, and delightful dishes emerged from the kitchen, one by one.
Very small place. Very annoyingly noisy. Service was not very friendly. Food was acceptable but nothing special. Probably a good restaurant for those staying at its hotel and in the neighborhood.
This is a very cozy Bistro in the city. Excellent food, great ambiance, clean, awesome service. Need I say more? Perfect for small groups and private dining.
We were transported back to Italy in this adorable little eatery. Very authentic food and extremely reasonable prices. So glad we found this gem!
Excellent Food! Authentic and Fresh! Nice portions.
Appetizers were good and tasty, cozy little restaurant but took the lasagna and it must have been pre made because center was cold but outside warm. Did no say anything because portion was big and was full when got to the center of piece. Partner took fettuccini, asked if pasta were homemade, basically just replied with “no, it’s from a box” we asked it politely as we expect italian places we go to make their own pasta. Overall, good.
Like being transported to Italy!
We had a great dinner celebrating our niece's 21st birthday. Not wanting to limit ourselves to just one dish, we ordered four for four people, family style. Everything was fabulous. This is a small restaurant with perhaps a half dozen tables. The owner, without being at all in the way, bent over backwards to ensure we had a great meal. The evening could not have been better, thanks to this excellent meal.
Small neighborhood place. But the food was terrific. Had just returned from an Italy and this restaurant compared to the old country.
Charming restaurant with delicious food. Very accommodating. We had the cáptese salad and the grilled romaine salad both were delicious. We then ordered the rigatoni in an arabista sauce. They happily substituted the fettuccini which was made fresh that day. Great flavors! Very reasonable, charming ambience!
There was an unruly customer and the staff handled it very well. Thank you.
A true gem with outstanding pasta and salads.
Unfortunately they were out of veal and mussels as I would like to have tried both.
We definitely will return .
Small setting but very cozy with amazing food. Would absolutely reccommend
I'm almost afraid to tout this place and have it overrun, but this this place is a gem! It was the perfect ambiance for our group of 6 as we could converse without the need to shout. Everyone enjoyed their entrees, although mine came out on only on the warm side (vs. being hot) which keeps me from giving 5 stars across the board.
I surely will keep this place in mind for future dinners in the city!
This place is a hidden gem. The food is incredible every time
Authentic Italian-made food in a very cozy setting. I had the Italian sausage rigatoni, it was the perfect blend of sauce and meat. The chef who made the food recommended the Chianti, it paired perfect with the food. For dessert I had the Tiramisu, it was fluffy and flavorful. Next time I'm in downtown San Fran I am definitely stopping by. I'd recommend making a reservation, through this app, as seating is very limited (9 tables in all, that can sit 4-6).
Quite liked the fresh pasta with any treatment available!
A very small, intimate restaurant (~10 tables), we visited on Valentine's Day. The food was quite good, tho the noise level was quite high due to a table of 4 boisterous tourists (not the restaurant's fault).
It definitely is a hidden gem
Wonderful food ....almost like home cooked
Light and tasty pastas.
Loved the appetizers.
We are vegetarians but hostess and chef made some changes to menu and we had a wonderful meal.
Tiramisu was awesome.
Small place but definitely will return
Nice little restaurant with good food, friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommended if you re in the area !
What a find! Excellent food, intimate setting and not noisy so you can actually hear the conversation with your friends without yelling. I will definitely go back
Very nice laid back Italian restaurant with nice service
The Rigatoni alla Calabrese was good with the pasta al dente. The secondi should be expanded. The epresso could be better though, a little weak. A cozy quiet place, romantic for a date. Good neighborhood. I recommend this place.
