FOOD WAS VERY GOOD, WE HAD THE SAUERBRAUTEN, ROLANDEN, POTATOES PANCAKES, GOULASH SOUP AND FLOURLESS CHOCOLATE CAKE. ENTREES WERE NICELY PORTIONED AND SERVED APPROPRIATELY WARM, THE ROLANDEN WAS VERY TENDER AND FLAVORFUL . FLOURLESS CAKE WAS WONDERFUL, MORE LIKE A CONFECTION THAN A CAKE, THE DENSEST I HAVE EVER EATEN. THE ONLY DRAWBACK WAS SOMEWHAT SLOW AND NON-ATTENTIVE SERVICE. THE WAITRESS MIXED UP THE SIDES ON TWO ORDERS AND HAD TO BE ASKED THREE TIMES FOR COFFEE. IT WAS FRIDAY LUNCH AND THEY WERE FULL UP BUT NO PARTIES WAITING, SO THE WAITRESS COULD HAVE BEEN MORE ATTENTIVE. WOULD DEFINITELY GO THERE AGAIN AND RECOMMEND IT. .
Three of us went there to enjoy Father's Day dinner German style. The food was very good and the ambiance certainly German. It wasn't their typical menu, so some of the items we had wanted were displayed on the menu in combination with other dishes. We had a very good time and will be back before too long to catch them in a more normal mode.
By the way, they really made it easy to park. Anticipating a large crowd, they were prepared to park your car for free elsewhere, if necessary.
My family has been going to this restaurant since I was a young girl. The food and service is quite good. I highly recommend the restaurant if you want authentic German food.
Great German restaurant. Old world atmosphere. Big portions.
Was a great time. Our waitress was outstanding! Can't wait to go back.
Dawn, one of the hostesses, did an outstanding job with our group of six on Sunday. She initiated a fun conversation between our group and the singer/musician and made sure I got my OpenTable points (because somebody else checked us in and our group didn't all arrive at once). Thanks for the great, fun time!
It was all good. Gemutlichkeit
Best German food around. Great service nicely Decorated. People friendly
This was our third time dinning there and each time we had something different. Each time the service quality of the dinner and value where outstanding. The red cabbage was better than expected and the German Fries were just the way my mother made them. Will go back in the future.
The food was delicious and authentic. The host was very helpful and friendly. The band was an added plus!!
We’ve enjoyed Edelweiss for years, so it pains me to write this review, but boy is it awful there these days. Crowded with too many tables, loud as hell (which would be one thing if a polka band was playing, but on a recent night we were there, they literally had the radio blaring through their speakers), dirty dishes and silverware, weak service, and dry, flavorless food (unless you count the watery salad with the gelatinous glob of dressing dumped in the middle).
And no lingonberry jam available, despite all the schnitzels on the menu. That’s a crime in itself.
The only saving grace is their apfel strudel, but that’s likely made by a neighborhood bakery, and not by Edelweiss itself.
I’m sorry, Edelweiss, but we are breaking up. You’re not the only German place left in town (yet).
wasn't aware of limited menu on mothers day. no ambient music was on. musicians were arriving after we ate. weren't aware of musicians start time.
Always great food and friendly atmosphere with wonderful staff. Thank you
They are always happy to see you, the food is genuine, the beer is genuine.
Great German atmosphere, good variety of schnitzels and German cuisine. The 3 lb. Pork shank was more than enough for two people, leftover for another meal at home. If it was braised instead of baked, would have been more tender but otherwise ok. Soups were on the salty side. Apple pancakes, fried calamari, and apple strudel were very good.
Terrific homey restaurant with a welcoming feel to it. Great selection of entrees so much so had trouble choosing. We will be back.
Good German food. My pork tenderloin schnitzel was decent, but a little tough, hard to cut. May have been fried a little too much.
We had an earlier reservation so not yet crowded which worked well for our party.
Service was fantastic. Food outstanding. Great ambiance.
We went for a family get together. Party of 14 with ages 3 to 95. It was perfect for everyone.
I ordered the rouladen with spatzle. My wife is from Germany and it's hard to find authentic German food for her and her family when they visit the US. Get the rouladen and they will not be disappointed. ONLY critique is about the pickles. They are a little hard to cut and I had to pull them out and slice separately.
I ordered the apfel strudel for desert. I expected a small slice of something from Sisco that somewhat looked like what I was expecting. I was SURPRISED to find the most authentic apfel strudel outside my mother-in-law's creations in Sobernheim. Fresh apples, nuts, etc. Flaky crust. Vannila eis, schlagsahne, mmmmmm!
You walk through the bar to get to the restaurant. That bar is the most authentic German bar I've seen outside Germany. It would fit in on any street corner from Berchtesgaden to Lubeck to Saarbrucken. The only difference is the smoke. No smoking at Edelwiess, but they still get to smoke in their bars in Germany.
Go here, get the rouladen with spatzle and some apfel strudel with coffee for desert and you WILL NOT be disappointed.
Server was slow. Not sure if kitchen issue. Restaurant had empty tables. If in a hurry don’t go here. If you have time great restaurant
If you'd like to try German food, this is an amazing restaurant. Both my friend and I tried schnitzels --and we loved them. We brought home half our meals--so--show up hungry, or plan to enjoy leftovers. ;)
We were warmly welcomed when we arrived and immediately seated in a cute booth with many interesting things to look at. We felt like we were inside a fairytale Gingerbread house! Despite the dated decor everything was very clean. Our waitress was friendly and helpful- I asked for recommendations and we ordered all of her favorites. My husband and I both enjoyed everything. The food was good but the service was amazing. The waitress, the busboy, the manager and even the bartender whom we didn’t really deal with, were all so helpful and friendly. They made us feel like family. It’s quite a distance from our home but we will definitely make the and return!
Our German foreign exchange student thought the food was pretty authentic and especially liked the accordiun musician
Family gathering with fond memories of family gatherings back in the day! Delicious food and ambiance!!
I set up a trip with the Berwyn Park District to Edelweiss Restaurant for a group of Active Adults and they all absolutely loved it! The restaurant was very easy to access, the wait time was short, they were able to accommodate a lot of tricky situations (10 separate checks, lots of substitutions, etc) with ease, and the best part, the food was very authentic and very delicious!
I would highly recommend Edelweiss for a casual dining experience with a good selection of food, beer, and cultural dining.
Extra thanks to our servers Katrina and Jose for their help that day!
I am not sure what to think --we walked into this restaurant and the first thing we see were slot machines. Not quite fitting for what really is a family restaurant. Our bread was cold --from the fridge-not fresh. I would have liked to see more than 1 slice of pumpernickel! Soup came out lukewarm, entrees tasty (wienershnitzel) cabbage side was bland. A nice selection of desserts. Not sure I would recommend this place to my true "foodies" but if in the neighborhood, it would be an ok place to stop by, despite the ugly slot machines out in front!
The waitress are always so nice and efficient we LOVE coming here.
We were with a group for St. Patrick’s Day and had a wonderful time. The music added to the ambiance.
The food and service was outstanding
Fun old school German dining. Perfect for my German father
This a real home kitchen place. I'm talking about how when you were growing up and you and your family spent the evening eating a big family meal together. Well Eidelwiess does this ten times over. You feel like you are in your family kitchen having the very meal you're ordering from their menu. Excellent place.
We were interested in having German cuisine for dinner, and we were very pleasantly surprised! This was possibly the best we've had! All of the items were prepared to perfection and the presentation was very appealing. We would definitely recommend it to anyone!
Great place for German food.
As a Lincoln Square couple, we were saddened by the closing of the Chicago BrauHaus. We took our mother out for her birthday dinner tonight to Edelweiss and we were so completely happy with our experience. Dawn, the manager was lovely and welcomed us with Apfel Schnapps. The food was excellent! Best liver dumpling soup around! Jacob, the house musician was so much fun and played our mother’s favorites. The wait staff (props to Kayla in particular) was excellent.
Save room for those deserts! Thank you Edelweiss for a great night-see you soon for a night on the outdoor patio!
Great food and beer with some Smiling Staff. Kathy took great care of us. The Hackepeter was so delicious.
The food was excellent, but my wife and I were there for almost 2 hours for what should have been no longer than a 1 hour meal. Granted, there were a couple of large groups there that evening. But, overall, it took a very long time for each step of our meal: We ordered drinks (excellent beers) and shortly after that arrived we ordered a pretzel (also excellent). At some point in this process we got a different waitress, it appeared our original waitress was quite busy. Our entree order wasn't taken until we have finished with the pretzel. Then began out longest wait of the evening. On the upside, there was live music helping to keep us entertained. I asked for another beer, which arrived almost immediately. It was explained that it had been poured by mistake for another table. I'm not convinced, however, that it was the variety of beer I had asked for. Nonetheless, it was pretty good. Our food was promised a couple of times. Eventually I flagged down our waitress and she promised "it will be right out." She asked another employee to bring it out to us, and it came almost immediately. It made us wonder how long it had been sitting there waiting to be brought out. The waitress offered excuses of the large groups and an increasingly large to-go business. No compensation for the extreme wait was offered (and I didn't seek it), though the last beer was not added to the bill, likely due to the mistake regarding the other table.
Overall, we me go back at some point, but we'll be wary.
Excellent food and service always. Great authentic German food.
One of Chicago areas best German style restaurant by far!! Never have had a bad experience.
Went for Valentine’s Day with my mom and daughter .. Everything was fantastic as always .. We’ve been going there for many years and will be back ..
We love this place from top to bottom. Took 90 y/o father-in-law, with spouse, daughter, son-in-law and two grandsons, aged 3 and 1 on an early, 5 pm Sunday night.
Josephine was an awesome server, busboys are incredibly efficient and food as good as ever, with huge portions! Only negative: only one oompah bandsman. He played sax, clarinet, and accordion with canned music/polka’d. He was great and we danced with grandsons. But we missed the other musicians as website said they’d be there starting at 3 p.m.
