Excellent food! Don’t order from the menu but ask the chef to prepare you something. You won’t be disappointed.
While the food was good, I felt very mislead — though the website mentions the ability to hos private parties, nowhere is it prominently mentioned that all guests are given set, prixe-fixe menu. Their menus online (including on Yelp) show prices next to dishes — this lead me to believe you could order from the menu and pay the listed price. Unfortunately, this was not the case. The food is tasty, but the style of restaurant — not being able to order a single dish from a menu and always paying a set rate — needs to be prominently noted. Our company dinner here twice the allotted budget, since this was not made clear.
Fang owner took control of ordering for us and everything was awesome.
RETURNED FOR A SECOND VISIT TWO DAYS FOLLOWING MY FIRST VISIT WHILE IN SAN FRANCISCO. JUST HAD TO GO BACK FOR MORE OF THIS DELICIOUS FOOD. HAD DIFFERENT DISHES FROM THE MEAL TWO NIGHTS EARLIER AND IT WAS FANTASTIC AND STILL THE BEST CHINESE FOOD I HAVE EATEN. IF YOU LIKE CHINESE FOOD YOU WILL LOVE FANG.
Best Chinese food ever! Found this place 9 years ago and this was first opportunity to return since. It was great back then and even better now. Not to be missed.
Service was terrible. Wrong orders, no water refills, had to ask for our check long after table was cleared, restaurant less than half full, and multiple wait staff standing within feet of our table doing nothing. Food was decent, but way overpriced for that poor or service.
On the website it looks like a design and lounge place but it’s small and smelly and the food is over covered in sauce. The service is very very basic, bier in a bottle type of service.
Amazing food, good service, very busy!! Recommend going with the "family style" option where they bring you a ton of food that gives you a chance to sample a lot of different dishes. Each one was terrific!
Food was good, service was terrible. Maybe it was that he was annoyed that we had two children with us, but the gentleman who waited on us (I think he may have been the owner) was extremely inattentive. When we tried to order wine while we were ordering food, he told us he would send someone else to take the drink order. No one ever came. The food came very quickly, but it took forever for us to get the bill. It’s a shame because the food was good, but given the service I don’t have any plans to return.
Tasty food but mostly deep fried :(
Salad was too salty and had some grit in it!
We had a fantastic experience. The food was fresh, and flavorful. We will definitely be back!
Go with Mr Fangs recommendation!
Seven of us ate at Fangs whilst on holiday, children and adults. We had read the reviews about not letting Mr Fang order for the table as they had been disappointed with the meal. We therefore ordered from the menu but also agreed to have a couple of Mr Fangs choices. All of it was absolutely delicious and especially Mr Fangs options that were not in the menu. Next time we will be letting him order to try it out.
We asked the chef to choose our menu and were not disappointed! The honey apple prawns were delicious and the so-called pork bun was actually luscious pork belly in a folded dough perfect! Enjoyed the fresh bean salad, beef chunks Nd pot stickers with eggplant. And a full bar. Our second visit and even better than the first time. Perfect location for anything at YBCA
Marvleous, the owner/chef interview customers as to their food preference and then makes suggestions for dishes from a large menu of delicious and rarely seen here dishes. A truly unique and enjoyable experience.
The soup was greasy. The dumplings chewy, the noodle dish with chicken soupy with pressed chicken pieces. Real let down
First of all, we got "Fanged" which means, if you are new to this restaurant, the owner takes it upon himself to order for the table. I did not realize that this is what regularly happens to first time customers until I looked on TripAdvisor after the fact. We were promptly greeted by the owner and before we could open our menus, he took them from the table and implied to trust him with our order. What a treat! Not. He asked for food allergies, etc. and I emphatically explained that I was there for Dim Sum and my other sister was there for noodles and traditional Asian.
So the food started coming out, like a conveyor belt, one dish after another, very prompt, but we hadn't even received our cocktails after the first two dishes of fried and fried. I do not regularly eat fried pork or beef at Asian restaurants, preferring noodles and dim sum but it was fair, two in our party of 4 liked it. Finally the dim sum, tasty but not as good as the more traditional offered in Chinatown. He was perplexed that I was not very happy with his food choices, one sister stating that sweet and sour was not her favorite in which he seemed totally stunned and surprised. He then left and never returned to our table, apparently tending to other new customers to get "Fanged". My sister and I observed 2 tables nearby who had groups of 4 and were Asian and they were ordering off the menu, they were eating bowls, soups, and the like. I felt like a target and this was confirmed when I got the bill. He had ordered double of every sampling for 4 women, the waitress asked if we wanted a "to go" box, but no, we are staying at a hotel! I complained which did no good, so I payed the bill & left with a sour (not sweet) taste in my mouth. As we were leaving, I told a group of tourists that were waiting for a table to say NO to getting "Fanged". It's a gimmick.
The food here is great! The atmosphere is fairly peaceful for Midtown and the decor is very pleasant.
The owner Mr. Fang is a creative cook and he’s always there to recommend the best dishes. However he should also let people discuss his recommendations and order what they want!
Still I have never had a disappointing dish.
My husband was almost done eating before my entree arrived. It was cooked incorrectly so it was sent back. No one ever came to check on us to ask how the food was or if we wanted more water. $16.95 for a small vegetarian dish was expensive.
All of it was disappointing. We had been here before and enjoyed it, but this time the food had almost no flavor and did not taste very fresh. We will not return
Every dish was fresh and tasty. Good-sized portions as well.
As many reviews have said they tried to charge me more for one of the items ($19 instead of $13.95). Dishonest!
The owner makes you feel “special” by personally selecting your dishes however he picks the same 3 or 4 dishes for EVERY table. What a great way to reduce inventory costs!! Biggest turn off was the price! Dinner for 2 with 1 cocktail
$100! This would be $50 max at almost any other Chinese restaurant.
Incredible food - selected by Mr. Fang. Try the honey prawns with apples.
Peter and his team did a great job as always!
Best Chinese food in San Francisco. It is our favorite.
A nice double birthday celebration for two of our grown up kids. The dumplings were amazing especially the mushroom and gouda cheese being out of this world. The fish in chilli sauce was another out of this world dish. The service was impeccable.cheers
I expected better. While the food wasn't bad, it wasn't great either. Service started out below par but that may have been because we arrived early (5 PM) and the regular wait staff weren't on duty yet (service did improve later on). Cocktails were overly sweet for my taste. The dumplings were boring. The beef dish was better but uninspired. Portion sizes were generous. The brown rice was mushy and unappetizing. Our server explained that the chef didn't know how to cook brown rice and brought white rice (so much for trying to be healthy) while removing the charge from our bill. Since there are too many other interesting restaurants in the city to try, I don't think I'll be back.
It was a great place to meet family and we had a great time at Fang. The food was excellent and the ambience was great. Half of the group were vegetarians and they brought out dishes that were out of this world. We were very pleased with the service. Didn't know that the owner and Chef of House of Nan King, which has always been one of our favorites, has opened Fang with his daughter and now they are doing a roaring business. Would definitely recommend to family and friends.
Great food and the chef took our orders. It was our first time so he ordered for us. The pork belly rolls and shortrib were well worth the money.
Our second time to FANG, excellent food with the ordering taken care of by the owner. Every dish was a surprise and none of them disappointed.
The food was good but too salty. We had four plates and consistently all of them had too much soy/sauce or salt. Still they were good. Service is normal.
Superb meal organized and prepared by the staff. Consistently imaginative cooking.
FANG is the best. The vegan food is killer and it is always an incredible experience dining. Thank you!
Food was very tasty and different from other Chinese places! A little rich :(
I would have given five stars but for the fact that the food didn’t come out piping hot. Really very good food. Very unusual fried rice. Awesome noodles. Amazing beef n prawns. An older gentleman asked us if we had ever eaten there before. We hadn’t. He took away our menus and we left it to him to order after he confirmed some basic likes n dislikes. Amazing experience of family style dining with very tasty dishes and perfectly ordered quantities.
Amazing lunch experience, the best I’ve had in LA. Amazing dumplings, appetizers, delicious tea and the crispy short rib fangs special with bok Choy is to die for. Will definitely be coming back here!
The owner came to take our order and asked if we'd been to the restaurant before, when he learned we hadn't he took it upon himself to bring us a series of fun, delicious and unique dishes. A really great meal.
Expensive for oily and sweet entrees
Friendly welcome, a menu that was just about the right length, prompt service and really, really good food on a 'Chinese with a twist' theme. Ambience good but not too noisy. Correctly not located in Chinatown - this restaurant can standalone in a central location.
