Outstanding food with excellent, friendly service. Very nice ambiance in a well furnished room.
Nice ambiance. Sat in the bar area in the back as the front was closed for a private event. We had the small bar area to ourselves.
They were out of several of the wines we requested.
This was my second time at this restaurant. Both times I made reservations, both times I walked into an empty restaurant, both times I was asked several times if I had a reservation (what the name on the reservation was, etc.), both times the restaurant never reached capacity. It's weird.
The service was fine during my first visit. This time, however, the service was disappointing. The waiter was friendly, but in a hurry. We felt rushed and while we were having leisurely meal, spending more time visiting than eating, we ultimately felt like that concerned him. The restaurant was empty when we walked in for our 7:00 reservations, it got about 1/2 full while we were there, and then it was empty again by about 9:15, short of one other table. Even though we had our bill, he came over and asked if he could run the card, he was going on break. At that point, we couldn't image he was really going on break. I wonder if he pushed the very last table out like he did us? In no way would we have overstayed our welcome, nor did we give our waiter reason to think we would.
It is the perfect restaurant to enjoy an excellent meal, in great ambiance, with an old friend you just want to catch up with. The staff treats this place more like a hybrid of a restaurant that requires reservations months in advance and a diner that has a line out the door that needs to turn tables. Neither of which are seemingly warranted.
Would I recommend this restaurant? I still would, but I probably would include this little caveat.
Although there was music playing in the background and low lights for ambience the dining room was missing something. Can’t really put my finger on it. My Wife ordered wine from the wine list. Rather than the server saying they didn’t have that wine, he immediately said with another wine label. My wife again ordered the first wine she had selected from the wine list thinking our server missed heard her order and that’s when he said they were out of the wine she was requesting. I asked for a cocktail menu and was told they didn’t have one. They did have a full bar. I ordered a whiskey drink which the server didn’t know. However he did a Google search found the recipe and make it for me. Our server didn’t have much of a personality. We were only one of three couples in the entire restaurant. I would think with a few clients on a Friday night we would have been given a little more attention.
My wife had the special, meatloaf. She said it was dry as if it had been made the day before. She ate about half of it And opted not to take the remaining half home. I had the cheeseburger. It was good cooked I requested. Dinner overall was so so. We were headed to dessert menu after dinner. My wife spotted bread putting on that menu. When she said bread putting a loud their service said we’re all out of that. We opted for no dessert, asked for a bill then headed home.
All in all our anniversary dinner at the Firehouse Bistro was a dud!
No A/C int the dinning room, made for a less than comfortable experience. Service was very good and friendly. I had the meatloaf special and found it dense and dry. My wife enjoyed her rack of lamb, and we both thought a shared Caesar salad was excellent.
Sauces were much too sweet and why does everything have to be doused in walnuts ?
Ambience a bit flat and service slow
Most dishes contained garlic, which was unacceptable to my wife. The chairs are low and the tables high, which makes for uncomfortable seating. The establishment charged a 20 % tax, which I believe is illegal. In San Mateo the sales tax is 9.25 %. The waiter was competent and friendly. The dishes are very pricey.
Cameron and the staff are outstanding. Not sure why the restaurant is not busier but we're not complaining. Excellent quality food choices. Our favorite.
Treated me to a wonderful Birthday, and thanks Cameron, for the flute of champagne!
Excellent as always. Our go to placer all our family events.
Really any of the categories above would fit depending on one’s budget.
I had lamb chops which were superb. I have celiac and they took good care of me. The veggies were great and a great variety. A bit on the crunchy side for my tastes, but so easy to over cook so I didn’t send them back. They were beautifully arranged. The sauce on the lamb chops was really good. At first they looked too rare but they actually were perfect!!!
My Mom had ceasar salad and said it was one of the best ceasars she’s ever had. She’s 91 and has been ordering ceasars almost every time we’ve gone out in my 62 years. So that’s a lot of ceasars to be in competition with.
Our waiter was super nice and helpful.
Firehouse Bistro feels like a special getaway. So quaint and romantic. All of our meals have been delicious, and as a diner with gluten sensitivities, I truly appreciate the special attention and care they provide. Amazing service. Amazing food.
Great spot for a classy date
A lovely birthday celebration!
This was our second dinner at Firehouse Bistro and we were not disappointed on either evening. On this last night we ate in the backroom by the bar, which was more quiet than the front dining room that had an energetic sound level. The dining room was full and everyone was clearly enjoying their evening. Dinner was excellent! I had the pork chop and it was tender/juicy - delicious - served with polenta, fresh veggies. My husband had a double cheeseburger/fries and both were delicious. Service was excellent from the maitre de to the server. This is a perfect spot for a romantic date night or for an evening with friends.
So kind and such amazing food! Had a great night!!
We were disappointed this time with Firehouse Bistro. We have always enjoyed our meals there, but on Mother’s Day there was a prix fixe menu, and the experience felt like being on a factory line. The meal was rushed, and the food wasn’t up to its normally high standards. And it was quite expensive. I don’t think we’ll return.
Really good food! The restaurant is super cute and calm. Overall you enjoy the meal in a nice and stress free atmosphere
I do not recommend. The food was just okay; the atmosphere was dark and outdated. The servers were attentive but not knowledgeable about the dishes and didn’t describe anything that was brought to us, just dropped the plates and ran off leaving us to figure it out.
I always find this restaurant to be very good. But it’s usually also very empty which I don’t understand. This Friday we were a party of 9 and other than us only three other tables had people. So the restaurant seemed about 50% full. I don’t get it. This restaurant deserves more customers. It’s really a very good place with excellent service and a super quaint ambiance.
We had a fabulous dinner at Firehouse bistro!! Our salads were delicious, and the salmon and sea bass entrees were wonderful!! Our service is always great and the restaurant is quiet so you talk very easily at your table. We love this restaurant and have been there numerous times in the past few months! We highly recommend it!!
There happened to be a party of 20 right next to us which I know is not normal. So the extra noise can be excused. Two of us ordered the special, which was the "10 spice halibut". It must have only had two spices as we both thought it was very bland. The non-traditional bread pudding was the best dish. All of the other dishes were average at best.
We got there on time for our 7:30pm reservation and had a table located next to the fireplace. The service was just very quick and it felt like they wanted to make sure we leave early. Barely had we ordered desert, that it arrived. My guest's food was OK (tuna tartare and salmon entree) but mine was not good: Brussels sprouts that were too spicy and a pork chop with applesauce and polenta that were not good. The meat itself was good though.
Nice ambience but food overpriced and service was lacking. With the Village Pub next door, I can see why the restaurant was only half-full on a Friday night at prime Time.
The food was impressive, the service superb. The restaurant was full on a Tuesday night- a testament to their quality in all facets.
This charming little restaurant has a very warm and welcoming staff as well as a wonderful menu. It is always a pleasure to have an evening here.
Love the interior of this place - so quaint yet sort of funky! The Brussels sprouts are a must, the salads were great and all of our mains were excellent. The service was outstanding- we’ll be back!!
Great dinner. love the atmosphere and the service was phenominal.
Fantastic service, ambiance and food! Can’t believe it took us so long to discover this. A hidden gem. Lamb, beet salad, crepe brûlée and local Pinot Noir were all delicious.
We now have made this restaurant on our great list and go all the time. Love those Lamb Chops
Fantastic food and great service
Wonderful Valentine's menu. Food was delicious, perfectly prepared, and well presented. Would return anytime.
The server was amazing. He had the entire room but the service was impeccable. The food was great and it was a delightful birthday.
Our food was excellent and service was superb. It was a slow night out for dining and so the noise level was perfect for conversation.
We ate here on a rainy super bowl Sunday. As such, it was a very quiet place, but it’s such a great ambience. Nice warm fireplace, old-world style, very good food and fantastic service.
Our food was delicious and the service was excellent! Very nice ambience and easy to carry on conversations.....noise level not too loud. I highly recommend this restaurant.
