Grilled Scallops (NJ)
with Butternut Squash-Potato Puree, Spinach, Brown Butter, Crispy Capers
First time back after more than two years, same great seafood. I had the lentil soup and Hawaiian swordfish, with the flourless chocolate dessert.
So proud they have made it through Covid. So many other's in the Opera Plaza did not. Excellent food. Excellent service.
Great dinner. They were able to get us in and out in time for a concert. Friendly and professional service.
Was hoping for a quiet and quality white tablecloth experience before the event. Hayes St Grille delivered in a big way. We will definitely be back.
French fries are the best in San Francisco
Overall, great! Will be back!
Hayes Street Grill is a relaible upscale maintain of downtown SF near several entertainment venues. A very clean and polished purveyor of fresh quisine that is cooked and presented with optimal skill, creativity and care. We had black cod and mahi mahi that were cooked to tender perfection. the sauces offered for the mahi mahi were excellent in that they were fresh and flavorful but also subtle enough so not to overpower the fish. Our waiter, Steven, was a polished and professional tour guide to not only the menu offerings but also the neighborhood. We felt in very good hands with questions about the food as well as about local venues. Though this part of downtown SF offers a number of diverse dining choices, we would certainly enjoy another visit to Hayes Street Grill!
Dinner bEfore Jazz Center event.
Classic San Francisco ambiance--just the right amount of formality (white table cloths and heavy cloth napkins) with a welcoming attitude for all, impeccable service and flawless preparations.
Warm welcome, excellent and polite service; seemed to sincerely appreciate our business!
Food was fantastic
Waiter was cute and very good
The calamari was cold and tough! Not much food for a lot of money
Delicious and an overall wonderful experience. Expensive but worth a periodic splurge.
Overall very good. Were concerned about COVID sitting close to others, but everyone wore masks, even at the table between courses.
Great food fast service! Nice attention to detail!
We have been here before and enjoyed the food. This time the food was horrible. I sent mine back as the oil used to cook the fish had a foul taste. My husband ate his but said it was mediocre. I asked who the Chief was and was told they didn’t have a Chief expensive dinner for bad food. Never again.
We felt like this beloved restaurant has quit trying. We dined at 7 pm on a Saturday and reservations were superfluous. When we arrived about 25% of the tables were occupied (should have been a clue). It cleared out as time went on.
The menu choices were minimal - lots of fish and little else. One schnitzel and a “curry” that was simply beans and veggies. No lamb, chicken, pork or beef offered.
Portions were generally small. And the upcharges were frustrating. ( $2 for Acme bread slices, extra charges for sauce etc. ).
Our party of four had two bottles of $45 wine. The rest of the bill was preposterous- about $350 for a $100 experience.
A large Part of our disappointment was the huge gap between past visits and this experience. It wasn’t nearly as good as it used to be.
Excellent, as usual. This restaurant is one of my favorites.
Decor was dingy. Food not worth the price. Service was good.
Great as always. Stephen was very attentive to our needs. Great food. Excellent wine. Good drinks. Great value.

Hayes Street Grill continues to be one of the best values in San Francisco for excellent fish. Service continues to be outstanding as well and is especially appreciated given the difficulties that so many restaurants have with staffing.
Perfect spot for Davies hall - Dinner before! BIG price for average food! We had a GREAT waiter! Always Average!
I have been a patron for over 20 years, the food and service is spot on as always.
Excellent food and service at this classic SF restaurant
Great.. go to eat a Hayes St. Grill..
All is Great there
Delightful drinks and dinner before seeing Chris Botti at SF Jazz. Thanks.
We had NYE dinner at Hayes Street Grill. It remains a good standard for seafood, with excellent service in a comfortable environment.
consistent and the best fries around.. The swordfish and sea bass were excellent
Celebrating New Year’s
Food was excellent. Fish is the primary attraction. Desserts are homemade and outstanding. Can be noisy and service, though competent, can be slow if the restaurant is crowded with pre-symphony, pre-opera, or pre-ballet diners.
As always the food was outstanding. I had the calamari with butter beans to start and they had the perfect balance of oil and acidity to set off the calamari and beans perfectly. The WA oysters were perfect: crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside. The accompanying coleslaw was refreshing to the palate. Service was attentive but not intrusive.
Excellent and wonderful ambience. Old school restaurant and we enjoyed every plate.
Always a perfect restaurant, since the first time I went there, September 1, 1984.
Always a great place to dine before a performance - service is quick & attentive, but not rushed.
Food is consistently high quality.
Classic San Francisco urban dining. No fads, no gimmicks, just quality, attention to detail, and sublime food with gracious friendly service. Still wonderful experience after all these years.
Wonderful meal from start to finish! Only complaint would be the sugar top on the creme brûlée wasn’t freshly done so it was missing that hard texture vs the creamy pudding but the flavor was so amazing it was excusable
Have ate at Hayes Street for 30 years and have never been disappointed. I had sole which was favorable and tender and my husband's pork chops where the same. Only criticism is they could improve on the wines, good but not great..
For Christmas Eve lunch it was delicious and enjoyable, as always. The sea bass -- magnifique!
A long time favorite, never disappoints. They were busy (very) on this occasion and it slowed down the service but the food was still great.
The tables are really packed in. A little more space would have nice.
