Located in Higashiyama, east of Nanen-ji and west of Heian Shrine, Yachiyo is in a premier spot in which to experience the atmosphere of old Kyoto. First established as a fishmongers in the mid-16th century, it can still be found in the records of Hideyoshi Toyotomi – a pre-eminent feudal lord, warrior, general, samurai, and politician of the Sengoku period – who called on the restaurant to provide fish for a festival. Soon after, the former store changed to become a full scale restaurant, quickly gaining the adoration of visitors to the ancient capital. Toraji have launched this generous menu, specially for Kyoto. The interior, reminiscent of an old Kyoto townhouse, stretches very far back. The design is a lattice, based on the traditional patchwork textile chogappo, of gold, a colour which has always symbolized supreme quality in Japan, and wood, creating an opulent but calm and relaxed space. Another offering available only in the Kyoto branch is “white tare” (dipping sauce), a wholly new sauce made from white soy, which complements the carefully selected beef perfectly. Pontocho Fujita is an authentic Japanese restaurant. The restaurant itself is rather large, with a total of three separate stories. Pontocho Fujita's first floor is the main dining area and also features a 12 seat countertop and sushi bar. Pontocho Fujita second floor holds three separate private dining rooms that guests can reserve if they wish to only dine with their party out of the hustle and bustle of the main dining room.
