L'Escargot - Carmel
We are regulars, and will never change our 5 star rating or stop going.
This was our first visit here and it won’t be our last. Next time we are in Carmel L’Escargot will be at the top of our list. Excellent all around.
My daughter wanted to go here for her birthday. Made the reservations, needed to increase it by 1, which was easy to do.
Some things that I noticed, and probably no one else in my party did. Being a Chef, I would notice these things.
1. The Chef came out and chatted at different tables, they were probably regulars, which perplexes me that wouldn't he want us to be regulars?
2. I wasn't happy with the table they sat us at, right by the door, chilly as people came in and out.
3. The wine list definitely needs to be updated with a few more moderately priced wines, with a small description of each. I felt like an idiot asking my server the difference between 2 Burgundy. We're not sweet wine drinkers and I wanted to make sure we picked something we'd like.
4. The good news is, the food was great. I had the Pork Tenderloins with a Caper sauce and it was very tender. A few more vegetables maybe?
I really do try to not be critical as I know how hard it is to be spot on every night and the expense of running a restaurant.
5. Our server did a very nice job of taking care of us, no complaints with the service.
lovely old home restaurant in neighborhood setting. good menu choices, excellent wine list.
Food quality was adequate but wine prices and prices in general were excessive relative to quality. We have eaten here before on our visits to Carmel but will not again.
We had dined here 4 years ago and were so looking forward to eating here again. This is a very small classic and upscale French restaurant. The indoor room we were seated in held 19 people. A party of 7 was seated next to us. They were loud from the start. Oblivious to other diners. Next came a couple with a 60 lb dog. The dog made a constant ruckus under the table. Why is a dog in here? Maybe he was a service dog---I did notice if he was. Next--spotty service from the waitstaff with very few of the dining courtesies that we recalled from years prior that made our experience here so lovely and memorable. The food and experience did not seem as wonderful and lacked all of the accoutrements from before. That along with the dog and party of loud ruckus--we left disappointed.
The escargot mushrooms were excellent. The beef Wellington was the best I ever ate cooked perfectly medium rare. Wine Wednesday was a treat 50 percent off all bottles of wine. Carmel has been a wonderful place to visit and Escargot has been our favorite restaurant
Really excellent meal. First-rate service. Always a pleasure.
We had a lovely dinner. My husband had the escargot in mushroom caps and said that it was very good. I had the beef Wellington and was not disappointed!! Great service, quiet atmosphere- perfect for our anniversary dinner.
Always delicious! The beef Wellington was wonderful and my husband loved the veal. The lemon tart was a great finish!
Wonderful little French restaurant! The food is excellent as is the service. The ambiance was relaxing and it felt like you're eating at a friend's house. Waiter was super attentive and very knowledgeable. I wouldn't say it's for your average night out as it's a little bit pricey for a weekday type dinner but it's perfect for a special occasion or romantic night out. The food and experience are totally worth the price. We'll be coming back here for sure!
We celebrated our 29th wedding anniversary, wonderful ambiance and delicious food. They make a great Martini and have a great wine list. The pork piccata was outstanding. We will definitely return.
Great food & service on our 2nd annual visit. We plan to go many more times. This is by far our favorite Carmel restaurant!!!
We had a delicious meal with excellent service. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.
Dinner was classic French. Felt like we were in a small village in France. The side of vegetables that arrived with our fish was out of balance with the fish portion. I would have appreciated less fish and a generous helping of vegetables!
Overall, it’s a favorite!
Lovely dinner With excellent service. The food was delicious. Highly recommend.
Very tasty food, excellent wait staff. Good for a date night. Tucked away in a quiet neighborhood. A bit chilly when the front door was open in January.
Marvelous meal! Wonderful service! Escargot is a fabulous restaurant.
Outstanding classic fine French cuisine. Not a pretender French restaurant. A not to miss fine dining experience in Carmel.
Dined here while traveling through Carmel. We were staying at Best Western motel and chose L"Escargot because of reviews and proximity to our motel. The menu contained a wide variety with some added daily specials. Overall food and service were excellent. Especially notable were the French Onion soup and their version of creme brûlée dessert.
Lovely restaurant with excellent and authentic food. Not overly chi chi, very comfortable, good wines by the glass. The only thing that was a disappointment was that I didn't call ahead to make sure they had Beef Wellington...their version is outstanding!
This restaurant is worth a visit. In some ways it is an illustration of French restaurant food of the 1950s, intense and rich with very well-cooked fresh ingredients and classic thick sauces. The ambiance, too, is rather old-fashioned, and though the service is excellent it too seems a relic of Paris in the 50s - formal, all male, serious. For modern French food in a less formal atmosphere I choose La Bicyclette, but this is worth a visit every now and then. The duck breast and confit leg are truly delicious, and the fish is excellent.
The food is the best in Monterey County....maybe all central California. The service is warm and personal. Especially Sean who makes every visit much more enjoyable.
I could say much more but I don’t want this jewel to get overrun.....selfishly.
i live in the area and have been here many times over the years..kerry does an excellent job in the kitchen and the sauces are divine ....dont miss this place if your in the area for a vacation
Lovely dining experience at intimate eight table restaurant serving authentic French cuisine wile listening to Edith Piaf recordings are low volume. Doesn’t get much better. The evening special of Petrale Sole was superb.
Food and wine are top notch!
best restaurant in Carmel-by-the-sea. we look forward to our meal there each time we go to Carmel.
Excellent as always! Looking forward to our next visit.
We made reservations for our anniversary dinner and we're very happy with our dining experience. We had French onion soup, the beef Wellington special and duck. We also enjoy a bottle of Albatross Ridge 2013 Pinot Noir. Everything was superb. Our server was very attentive and helpful and the ambiance was busy but quiet and warm. We will be back.
The food used to be better, and we booked a table every time we’ve visited Carmel.
I was amazed to see the most basic salad split between the 2 of us was costing $13. It was literally 2 leaves of lettuce on each plate and a half of a grape tomato, and it cost an additional $3 for a “split salad”.
I had the steak frites which was more of a steak Au poivre, and there is nothing wrong with that and the steak was cooked perfectly medium rare however the steak still had quite a bit of inedible fat. My wife had the rack of lamb which was far better. We started with onion soup which was good but not the best I’ve had. My wife had the cheese & onion tart which was very tasty. We share. Finally we finished with the warm brownie. It was ok. Overall, I would go back and I would recommend this restaurant but but I would recommend the lamb and the tart.
The restaurant is charming, the service is great and the food is good. I would certainly recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet, delightful dining experience.
My husband and I enjoyed an intimate dinner, wonderful food, great service, quiet place.
The bread and potatoes were good, but the rest of the food was not. Escargot was cooked with inadequate amounts of snail butter. The sand dabs were dry and underseasoned, covered in bread crumbs but no discernible butter. The accompanying mixed vegetables were virtually raw, and again had no salt or butter. We started to wonder if we were experiencing a bad 1990-ish low-fat diet rather than a fine French meal.
The wine list seemed adequate, but the white burgundy we ordered was not the one we got (different year, different negociant). The space was poorly lit and warm. Service was pretty good, but even great service can't fix a bad kitchen.
Our meal on Sunday evening was the BEST meal we have eaten recently and we dine out frequently. From start to finish the food was superb and served promptly and elegantly in a lovely atmosphere.
Thank you for being the great restaurant that you are.
Fila and Steven Evanson
We live in the Bay Area and have been going down to L'escargot since 1989. It has consistently fantastic food accompanied by great service. Whenever family from the Midwest visits, we always take them to the restaurant.
Shane did a great job and the food was wonderful as usual
Food was mediocre, no imagination. Fish was fresh but not interesting preparation for the price.
Consistently good. Not great but service is a 5. Menu never changes so we’d like to see more specials nightly.
I cant say enough about this great establishment the crew and food is the best in Carmel !!I cant say enough about the Chef Owner Unbelievably great !!! Its the kind of place you need to keep going back to enjoy !!
