Mitama Japanese Restaurant

Exceptional food in modest surroundings
The food is amazing and we had a great time on our first trip! We went on Valentine’s Day and despite the rush, they kept up their service pretty well. A very energetic staff that all worked well together. I’m pretty sure this will become a regular spot for us now.
Had to ask multiple times for the waiter. 4 tables next to us were empty so not like they were slammed. Waited 15 mins from time we sat down until we finally had a waiter take our order.
We all had the special dinner with options. Salmon was dry but otherwise the food was great. I highly recommend it.
Very poor service. Many people stood at the door and were ignored by the staff who made eye contact then looked away numerous times. Slow service. Inattentive and inefficient.
As usual, good food, great service, tranquility, freshness of products...
This is our fourth time to Mitama. The food is always very fresh and worth the wait if it’s busy. Little atmosphere of note but perfect for a cozy evening with your partner. The service is challenged by the fact that they seldom have enough servers who seem frazzled.
Fresh sushi and great service
their sushi was fresh and very good and our friend had a combo plate of tempura and sashimi which he enjoyed. we went to try their ramen ,which wad okay but we like Marufuku better.
As always great food at Mitama. They even had a selection of Sashimi fresh from Tokyo.
Always fresh, always delicious. Thank you.
Laid back like a cafe but the quality of a high end sushi place. Nice neighborhood, good to walk around before or after.
Friendly service and great sushi
I had soft shell crab for the third time but it was not very good this time.
I visited the restroom for the first time and found it quite dirty. It made me question how clean the restaurant is.
Not too bad, it fish in the chirashi was not great.
too bad service needs a lot of help. would like the place more, but the wait is ridiculous since restaurant is understaffed. tried 3x's
great neighborhood place with fresh, well-prepared food. we tried salads, sushi, soups... no complaints at all.. a little tired on the inside, but who cares... a new go-to place when friends want Japanese
Food is good but the long wait overshadowed the whole experience.
The food is great! I have been coming here for over 8 years and the only thing that I have noticed is that the service seems slow but I've come to realize that the restaurant is small and that only allows for a limited number of servers. The only time it is slow is when getting seated and when getting the check. Once you know to expect that, you can enjoy the truly great Japanese fare they have to offer.
The fish selection and quality is excellent plus the nigiri portions are large.
On a busy night the service was overwhelmed but eventually got the job done.
The sushi chef was ornery but very capable.
The atmosphere isn’t anything special- an average corner restaurant. Great for friends and family outings but probably not a date to impress.
I would certainly recommend it dinner for the fish alone.
The best thing about this place is the food. Is was fantastic! Probably the best sushi fish I've had in several years. They say the fish is flown in fresh from Japan, and seems to be a much better quality than many other local restaurants. We also had tempura appetizer, and steak teriyaki. Also good, and generous portions. A mix-up with the order, but that was corrected. I would describe the restaurant as "homey," not fancy. They have at least a couple of dozen different sakes, if you are an afficionado. I am not, but enjoyed the asian beer on tap, and the food. My daughter saw a bowl of Ramen going by, and wants to go back to try it. Looked fantastic also, and per the menu they make their own broth to make sure it is the best.
We live in the neighborhood and wanted to check it out during restaurant week. The fish was tasty and well prepared and we enjoyed. We suggest the server slow done the delivery for each course. Thank you!
It seemed like they were understaffed the night that we went. It was very hard to get the attention of our server. I wasn't thrilled with the sashimi that I chose but that may have been because they were new types of fish for me. I won't be headed back.
We eat here often, as it's in the neighborhood. Excellent food; better than some more expensive Japanese restaurants in the area. My only (minor) complaint is that the service can be a little iffy; they don't always seem to have enough wait staff and it can be somewhat slow getting served. But things seem to be getting better lately. I noticed there's a nice, quieter banquet room I never saw before with a big screen for presentations. I think you can book it even if you have a medium-large party of people rather than a very large one.
Food was pretty good. Service was spotty and disorganized. Decor is kinda shabby. Teriyaki dish was not sweet enough.
Enjoyed the food and service,
I had the unagi udon, which was tasty - however, the host took too long to seat me, and service was slow. The value was great - definitely a good inexpensive tasty spot!
Very good food. Would recommend to a friend. Dishes were presented very well and were made very quickly. Be sure to check this neighborhood gem out!
Great find in the neighborhood. The sushi is fresh and the Ramen was great. It is a small place so I would recommend reservations especially if there are more than two.
I had ramen and pork slices, served in a rich bone broth. The dish includes a soft boiled egg, bean sprouts, spicy pickle, etc. The place was very busy and they lost our order. When we asked after about half an hour what was happening, they rushed it and gave us a bonus order of edamame.
We love this restaurant so much!
Mediocre food, lack of cleanliness in bathroom - naw we won’t be going back.
Gem of a restaurant. Ordered multiple dishes with sushi for a party of four and everything was exceptional. Portions were large. Casual setting, relaxed atmosphere, in a walkable neighborhood. Will be back when next in Berkeley.
Went here pre theater since my favorite Japanese restaurant doesn’t take reservations.
Green beans appetizer was tasty, as was hamachi negi maki and teriyaki salmon.
Disappointed in 2 “special” sushi’s.
Clam , and horse mackerel were just “ok.”
Surprised these were room temp, not cool.
Sushi rice fell apart easily when dipped in soy sauce (not ideal)
Large selection of “imported from Japan “ special sushi items. Waiter said he didn’t know anything about them to help me pick a couple.
Very nice place. Busy. Make a reservation. Great food. Nori chips are popular. Had rice bowl and udon noodle combo. Delicious.
Really fresh sushi and robata was nice combo to try a mix of dishes. It’s going to be my new East Bay goto place!
There were lots of choices on the menu, reasonable prices. Excellent service, well prepared fresh food. Nice ambiance for casual dining and conversing with friends.
The Ramen was spot on and the Nori chips are a must
Food is excellent, service is slow. Nori chips take forever to cook so should be ordered in advance.
Food was delicious and service was good! Very busy place! Definitely make reservations there’s not a lot of seating!
