Disappointed. Service was worse than I recall. I had to get waiter’s attention more than once. The sushi chef wasn’t there, so the quality of raw items and sushi rolls was subpar. Hot food was cold. The teriyaki beef was plain overcooked and unseasoned. I asked if the chef was there, and the waiter said he was in the kitchen. This used to be a favorite lunch spot. Now it’s an overpriced & subpar. Really too bad. I hope it was just a bad day.
Excellent presentation. Every dish was full of flavor and interesting to try. Quiet space. Highly recommended.
Delicious kaiseke meal in a quiet strip mall off Sand Hill. The food is delicious, well-balanced, and inventive/seasonal with nice presentation. The restaurant struggles a bit with dietary restrictions/accommodations (3/6 dishes had to go back to the kitchen when dietary restrictions were forgotten). The space is a bit run down / lacks ambience for the price point, but the food is delicious and I'd choose great food over a fancy space any day.
The food at Mitsunobu is perfect. Always enjoyable. All of the sushi/sashimi is perfect, the cooked black cod (actually butterfish, aka sablefish, I think) is divine. And the oshitahi (cold cooked spinach), and hijiki (seaweed with burdock and carrot), and they will bring you the head of your ama ebi, deep fried, if you want. Very delicious!
Our first visit. Arrived on time and had to wait 15 minutes for a table, small place so there is no where to wait other than stand by the host stand. Seemed understaffed by one person, the two main servers were working very hard but meant the wait time to place an order once seated was high. Black cod was very good, moist and very flavorful, very well prepared. Seaweed salad was OK, Red miso soup was good. Crab & avocado roll and spicy snapper roll were OK, not exceptional. Odd service fee/tip approach with 18% charged that they specify gets split by the entire staff, including kitchen, and then there is a line for tip which leaves one wondering, do you bring it up to around 20-22% , which is a small #, or should you tack on another 10-15%. Overall an OK but not delightful experience and will not be putting it in our “rotation” of Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Woodside restaurants.
Mitsunobu is always lovely. Perfect food. I eat here often.
Though it might be really nice to have some additional options. Welcome additions would be Sukiyaki, Nagasaki Champon (like at Menchanko Tei in NY in years past), soup like on Shinya Shokudo, and lightly boiled bean sprouts as a side, like Tomo's on El Camino used to have, before the Kaygetsu era.
It also would be nice to have some instrumental Japanese music. Perhaps they are constrained by the shopping center policy, and the shopping center chooses classical music of the sort that drives away teenagers who otherwise might loiter.
Prepare yourself for some outstanding Japanese food. The portions are small, so feel free to order a few items. The tastes are unique, and the service is understated. Brace yourself, though -- it is expensive!

Excellent Japanese cuisine. If you do the kaiseke, the upgrade on the sashimi is well worth it. Terrific sake selection.
Everything was perfect: service, food...sake :-). It's a little hideaway in the middle of the Sharon Heights shopping area. The shaded windows and ambience calm the frenzied outside world. We love Mitsunobu.
Absolutely loved this restaurant! The place is a true gem. Wonderful service and a very refreshing QUIET and calmness in busy, noisy Palo Alto. We were given a complimentary appetizer and dessert for no reason at all. You should know that this is not an American-Japanese restaurant. This is a Japanese restaurant. The portions are small and meaningfully prepared and presented. The atmosphere is reserved. If you want to relax and have a simple, beautiful dining experience, go here. If you want enormous fried sushi rolls and the like with cheap ingredients, go elsewhere.

We always enjoy dining at Mitsunobu. The fish is the freshest around. No other place compares. The menu is very creative and delicious.
Who likes Japanese food. It is always perfect and I eat there at least once every two weeks. So no more of these questionnaires for at least sin mos. perfect. What more?
What an extraordinary experience filled with beautifully displayed dishes with luscious tastes! I wish I'd known I had to order the Keiseki menu in advance, but the Chef's Special was a wonderful second choice.
The food is always perfect. I eat at Mitsunobu at least once a week. I ask Tomo to choose the sushi for me, and Tuesday night was especially delicious. There was some exotic fish called Big Golden Eyed fish, with a tiny grilled edge, wonderful And the uni was wonderful.
Delicious sushi that is beautifully prepared and high quality. Sashimi plate was exceptional. Would not recommend the chawanmushi or tai fish with rice plate. Will be back for sashimi and rolls.
The food at Mitsunobu is perfect. The only thing I would change is the music. It seems they are forced by the shopping center to pipe in generic mediocre music from the 18th c, and it would be so much nicer to have some contemplative Japanese music.
And maybe some noodles with pork and cabbage like in Shinya Shokudo?
Food is very authentic, Japanese modern cuisine. Waiters and chefs are Japanese. Quiet adult environment.
Perfect but expensive. The only bad aspect is that they add 18 % service fee and then ask for tips. Either or is OK but not both.
Quality Japanese, highly recommend sittingat6 the chefs counter if you can. Both omakase and kaiseki are great experiences.
The food here is refined and absolutely delicious. We came expecting another sushi place, but what we found was fine Japanese dining. It is a special place.
Food was perfect as always, and the flowers were unusually beautiful, especially the peachy amaryllis with the chartreuse foliage.
This is a close to perfect place. It is expensive but the only detail that bothers me is that they have an 18% service charge and then they ask you how much you want to tip.
Food and service were spectacular (and authentic). Sake menu extensive (on a par with a similar restaurant in Tokyo), although they were out of the our first three choices. Quite expensive and sadly only half full on a Saturday evening. Location (in a strip mall) may put off some but worth it.

The Toro was excellent, but the miso soup was not great, the spicy tuna roll was low on tuna and high on rice, the filet with foie gras was average. Way overpriced for the food. Also not very friendly service.

Food was really excellent. Waiter told us when we ordered that there was no rice, so all the sushi would be served as sashimi instead... which is pretty odd for any Japanese restaurant, much less a high end one. But as it happened the new batch of rice was completed by the time our nigjri course came out.
Great food. Service was quiet and prompt, would have liked more conversation but they were respectful of a date. The poor part was the annoying company that was very loud at their multi table setup. The staff could have tried to isolate the party or quiet them for the other parties that were visibly annoyed but they had a sizeable bill and I’m sure they wanted to optimize for a tip.
Mitsunobu is always wonderful. Perfectly delicious food, meticulously prepared. The tempura and age dashi tofu are things some restaurants mess up, but are always perfect at Mitusnobu. All of the raw fish is exquisite, but then so is the cooked fish, especially the black cod. We are fond of the hijiki (a seaweed cooked with carrots and burdock) and the oshitashi (cold boiled spinach, seasoned, perfect) too. Menlo park is a much nicer place to live for having Mitsunobu.
The food is always perfect at Mitsunobu. Your basic perfect food.
