The food was beautifully prepared but very rich as French food tends to be. Problem is I wanted to try everything. The chicken entree dish was a piece of art and a joy to eat. I did not like the fact that we are charged 4 dollars for two pieces of "country " bread after spending $350 on dinner for two people. I suspect San Franciscans are used to this treatment not to forget to mention adding a 20 percent tip on the bill ....just as ridiculous.
Third visit and seems the menu has changed a bit. Chef loves VERY complicated dishes where the main protein is not enough - Chef feels whatever it is needs shrimp or ham or something to be complete. It’s open for debate of this is enough or not. And PLEASE train the bartender to bartender. He does not know what he’s doing and should not be delivering random plates of food to tables as he did us. The main service is great and atmosphere very fun and highly charged in a good way.
Astonishingly bad service and mediocre food for a high price. No wonder the restaurant was pretty empty for Sunday brunch,
i usually tip 20% but they automatically add 20% tip to the bill. the service has gone down since that has occurred. basically, the wait staff knows that they don't have to earn their tip anymore. the service was really un-even as a result. appetizers took a while and then the dinner came right after that and they removed our appetizer plates that we were still eating from to make room for the dinner plates.
i wouldn't go back mainly because there are just as good or better restaurants food-wise in the city but also have better service.
Food was just about average and bland. The server forgot our beverages twice. Once in the beginning when we ordered food, and again when we ordered dessert. The staff were really fast in cleaning up the table right after we finished though.
Place sounded really noisy even though the dining room was only about 3/4 full, the ceiling was high, and people were just having their dinner conversations. It's hard to carry a conversation without raising our voice even though we were sitting directly across from each other on the same table. They should do something about the acoustic.
Would not return or recommend.
The stuffed flounder was exquisite! All dishes I have tried over the years never disappointed. The Chef prepares unusual combinations with excellent results.
I brought 4 young folks with me (going to a concert at sf jazz). We started with a nice greeting and welcome and a great table. Then my guests had whiskey cocktails and one person had wolf family phahedrus cabaret (a favorite we learned of though this restaurant)
The server was the best...knew her cocktails and the food)
Then we evolved to 3 oysters each which we fun. Then we had the frogs legs. What a wonderful sauce. Then 3 of us had flounder (SO WONDERFUL-sauce to die for and perfectly cooked). Then we had 2 desserts. The ice cream was my favorite.
I go to monster Benjamin and have always had a wonderful meal. I love this restaurant.
The most outstanding chicken liver terrine I have ever had. We shared three dishes and each one was excellent.
Great ambiance, food and drinks were great
Excellent food and service! The muscles were incredibly fresh and flavorful, escargot is a must!! Our server suggested a jazz club near by and was fabulous!!
Our second visit, again the food was outstanding. Very good French Bistro.
The service was attentive, everything was very clean, the sound level was not too loud.
It is not cheap, but everything was excellent! We have paid as much, for a lesser gastronomic experience. It was a wonderful start to the night, and proved in the end, to be the best part of the night. Alas, our entertainment choice was lacking.
The decor could use some improvement, very minimalist, but the last thing on my list
I would go back for a cup of coffee and our desert again, in a heartbeat Gâteau Marjolaine, was to die for.
French bistro food that is right on the mark, although the menu is somewhat limited. Service is unobtrusive but flawless. Ambiance was busy, but carrying on an intimate conversation between two guests was easy. It was opening night at the opera, which led to some interesting people-watching.
We went for a meal before the Symphony, and it exceeded out expectations in every way. We had some like starters before settling on the Salmon and Squab, which were done to perfection.
We made the Symphony in time, the meals was well organized and timely. I would come back!
Food here is of moderate quality and value. Steak frites we're simple and good enough along with an amuse-bouche portion of lobster bisque. The most delicious thing an interesting dish was the grilled little gem lettuce in ravigote sauce. Seems like a nice neighborhood restaurant attempting to be a French Bistro
Amazing service and food all around! Never thought fries could taste so fresh, steak could melt in your mouth so well, and a hint of lemon on crab and shrimp would finish so perfectly. Absolutely exquisite! Wonderful wine list as well, with a delicious digestif to finish off the meal.
Very expensive venue with poor selections, mediocre food & poor ambience. They include 20% tip but don’t tell you!! Paper table cloths & cheap decor! Forget it!!!
I was there with my niece and nephew celebrating a birthday and the service and food was outstanding.
Everything was great, but SKIP their dessert.
On a Saturday at 1pm only the "Brunch" menu was available, so, eggs in various forms. This was a bit limiting. Everything the four of us ordered was very tasty and well-prepared. The restaurant uses a tag team approach to service; the person who took our orders wasn't very friendly and seemed a bit put out when we didn't order everything in the first minute, but we wanted to enjoy our cocktail and not be rushed. They knew it was a birthday celebration. After that things smoothed out and the experience was quite pleasant.
As always an excellent experience. However, I would make a special note that on this visit the service was truly outstanding. Over the course of our meal a number of people attended to our table and each exhibited just the right balance of professional demeanor and warmth. Perhaps even more remarkable as the tip was already included in the bill. In some other venues that include tip, one gets the feeling that the staff doesn't care the least bit about providing good service. Kudos to the staff at Monsieur Benjamin!
There to celebrate a birthday milestone. Birthday card on the table from management. Service was attentive and served with a smile. Water topped up at all times. Food was as good as anywhere else, although the flavors were on the outside and not in the meat per se. You had to speak very loudly to be heard above the noise level. Full open kitchen so you can see everything. The only birthday treat was a lighted candle on the plate of the dessert that we paid for, otherwise I suppose you would have received a candle on an empty plate. Ok for a one time visit to experience.
Took a friend for his birthday dinner. Had a cocktail at the bar first and then transferred it to our dinner check. Servers were very friendly and made recommendations. Loved the food! A friend who is vegetarian was disappointed that there was bacon on the roasted cauliflower (which is amazing)
Loved the burger! Chicken liver pate is fantastic. A friends steak was fatty and based on the price, should have been better
We spent $400 for dinner and had to pay $4.00 for bread. Bread of some sort is always given when escargot is ordered...the only way to get the sauce.
Good wine list.
Burger was not as good as previous visits...fries very good.
They simply don't deliver on every count...Will not go back.
Overall the experience was nice. The service a good, the people were nice, and the food was fine but nothing I would categorize as excellent. The bill was pricey, I would choose another expensive restaurant over coming back.
Fantastic! I love coming back to Monsieur Benjamin.
Very tasty food and great bread. Good wine selection. Both menu and drink selection is edited. Relaxed but attentive service. But this was early Sunday afternoon. Previously unable to patronise without reservations. Closing digestive excellent. Pricey but worth the $$$.
Great place to have your brunch! Quality ingredients with well-prepared dishes. Very comfortable place to enjoy your relaxing weekend.
My third trip here. The service was slower than normal, I think because of the "baby birthday" celebration with a large part next to us. Food was great as usual.
Came in for brunch before a show. We’ve been wanting to try for a while. Great ambiance and delicious. Service was a bit slow but we were very happy with our visit. I’d like to come back and try for dinner another time.
Disappointed. We ordered three appetizers and did not like any of those. The Flounder and quail were bland. Will not go back.
Consistently on point service, excellent cuisine, and pleasant ambiance.
Great food, attentive service, lively, cool space.
The food was mediocre at best, nothing memorable especially at that price level! Very disappointed that we took our out of state friends there! Would never recommend it !
Amazing! It was one of the best restaurants I’ve been to in SF
Absolutely terrible experience. From untrained servers (diluting sparkling water with tap), to a “mix-up” in the kitchen that resulted in really unpleasant main course delay (by more than 1 hour), to one of the servers shattering a plate with glass flying into my face, my children’s faces and all our glasses.
Oh and to add insult to injury, 20% tip was included.
We will not be back. Ever.
This place is amazing, service, food, atmosphere just wonderful. Will be back again for sure.
Wonderful food, wonderful service, FABULOUS cocktails. Love this restaurant!
The service was okay, nothing outstanding. Any good restaurant let's you try their wine first before pouring you a full glass. Especially when I specifically asked to try it first, they just brought me a full glass of an $18 wine - should definitely pour a taste first.
The food was good, but nothing outstanding. I can recommend a few restaurants on top of my head at this price point that are way better, Californios would be one. Overall, not a terrible experience but nothing memorable either.
Came here to celebrate my boyfriend’s new job and it was the perfect place to enjoy some delicious French food and cocktails! Definitely recommend for special occasions.
