This was a truly bizarre experience. I had walked by this restaurant many times but had never eaten there. When I arrived there for my reservation there was no Pane Caldo signage anywhere. I thought to myself... am I in the right place... am I losing my mind? When my friend who is from Chicago arrived, he wondered too if they had closed and went in to inquire. The woman behind the bar described it as sort of a rebranding and that they were changing there name. It was unclear as to whether there had been an ownership change. Apparently this had all happened in the 5 days since I made the reservation... fishy. Our waiter was not unfriendly but was beyond strange. He seemed very invested in what we ate for dinner and pushed us very hard in one direction or another. He was there and wouldn't leave in some instances and couldn't be found in others. The food was surprisingly good I will say.
This is just a beautiful, elegant restaurant. The food is exceptional. One of the best high end Italian restaurants in the city at an excellent price point for this level of luxury. You feel like you are in that small favorite restaurant you found on that last trip to Rome or the one you wish you had taken.
Waiter was terrible. He didn't write anything down consequently there were errors. We were celebrating a special occasion and our cocktails came out at different times and one took 30 minutes to get to our table. Halfway through our dinner we were told that the waiter was sent home. Tip amounts on receipt were based on after-tax amount and the recommendation was 20%, 25% and 30%. The only thing that was good about our night was that the food was good. Also a very friendly host who actually went across the street to get mint for the 30 minute Mojito.
Some of the best Italian food we've ever had. Nice, quiet atmosphere
Service was very slow. Even though the restaurant was about 1/4 full
Dined here for Valentine's Day. It is a quieter place, nice ambiance. Service was disappointing and very slow. It wasn't very busy on Valentine's Day, but I feel like the server was not as attentive to our table as to other tables... Waited very long to order food and drinks. Other than that, the wine was great. They have a great selection of wine. The food was not mind-blowing, but enjoyable!
Had dinner before a play at nearby Water Tower. The food was excellent -- especially the appetizers. Best Cosmopolitan that I've had for a long time. We had lobster ravioli and duck with cherry sauce. Lovely, quiet, modern atmosphere. Food came quickly. The server was a distant and a little arrogant, but all other staff we encountered were friendly.
George did an excellent job at giving us an outstanding experience. The tasting menu was incredible and we would recommend at any time!
A lackluster and expensive experience. Very different from prior restaurant of the same name. Duck was overcooked and dry. Other dishes were mediocre. Service was lackluster and inconsistent. All three diners had the same opinion. Will not return there any time soon.
Had wanted to try this little Italian gem in Watertower area for awhile. Restaurant week & a visiting friend provided the impetus. Light, elegant Italian fare with more than a hint of Italia vs the over sauced, oversized American Italian that is too common. Chose a fabulous fresh pasta w rabbit Ragu that did not disappoint. The chocolate dessert, various chocolate mousse selections in a dark chocolate cup w marvelous cream was a surprisingly tasty finale
Delicious! Wonderful experience! I would recommend this restaurant for any occasion!
Only a few other tables seated, food was prompt and delicious, waiter recommended excellent choices
Everyone in our party of 6 enjoyed the food. The service was very good.
This was a night out with friends and we were not disappointed. The special (sea bass stuffed with crab) was recommended by our waiter and it was excellent. Service and ambiance at this restaurant is top notch. Would recommend to anyone looking for a quiet night out.
Italian, yes, but classic and with fish dishes, Mediterranean. Our table if eight had six different entrees. Every one could qualify as the House special.
Very competent service that is pleasant and accommodating.
The atmosphere is at once dignified and relaxed.
Because we arrived 20 minutes before our reservation, there was a mix-up in who was to be our waiter and we had to wait 10-15 after being seated to get the menu. Pane Caldo took all the blame, however, and treated us royally after that -- re-filled cocktails on the house, etc.
The waitstaff is knowledgable and the food is outstanding -- in variety, quality, presentation -- the works. Well worth the price for what you get to eat and drink.
consistently good service and delicious food, great location, with ambience just right for a couple (or two) to linger over a delicious meal.
Very good food. Nice on s Sunday night so it wasn't so busy. Also excellent location !
Excellent food and a wide variety of choices on the menu.
The fact that cleaning out the toilets was still going on as we arrived at 5:30 pm did not endear us to this place and we will certainly never go back.
Nice place for a comfortable meal, right off the avenue. Menu reminds me of what we used to see in the 1980s at most "good" restaurants - sauces, truffles, tiramisu - but if done well (which this was) there's still a place for it. We had friendly, if somewhat disorganized, service.
Nice dinner. Was in town for conference and it was very close to our hotel. Had read other reviews about waiters asking what type of water we wanted (still, sparkling) and we specified TAP water, otherwise they charge for bottled plain water-so avoided extra charge for water. They push wine a bit, too. Overall, it was nice. The Amish chicken was delicious, and the red snapper was very good. We went relatively early (6:30pm) and there were only 2 other occupied tables. Prices were reasonable for the location and food.
Love this restaurant and especially like Igor as our waiter. They were able to accommodate a party of 8 and put us in the private room within the week of making the reservation. Igor helped with meal and wine suggestions and all the staff was just very accommodating. The pasta with shaved truffles is outstanding!!
Excellent cuisine in a chic urban setting with great wall art. Attentive service, outstanding pastas and elegant dining overall.
We have been going to Pane Caldo for years, dating back to the old location, however this was our first time in the new location. It was great. I was a bit concerned when I read the recent reviews, but am happy to report food was excellent, as was the service. The ambiance is quite nice in the new location as well. Very nice wine selection with fair prices and some real finds as well. All 6 of us will be back.
Delicious Italian in a family-owned restaurant! Came here with a friend and was greeted with friendly service and a wonderful lunch. Just off the Mag Mile, it's in a convenient location, yet still a hidden gem in the neighborhood.
Good Italian food. The bread was not very good but the tapenade and tomatoes with it were tasty. The Amish chicken was delicious with lots of wild mushrooms.
This used to be one of our favorite neighborhood gems. New location is missing the great feel of the prior spot. We were very disappointed.
We were the only people in the restaurant for a while at lunchtime. The staff were very helpful in explaining the menu items. Food was excellent & prices good value.
Six of us, friends who get together for dinner every few months, had a great time, enhanced by a diverse array of Northern Italian/Mediterranean offerings. The sauces accompanying our grouper and sea bass were light and flavorful. The deserts elegantly simple. The wine list more than adequate to our range of tastes, which is considerable.
An excellent place to come with a date ... Or five dates!
Typically a great spot but although we had a reservation had quite a wait to be seated and served. The regular staff I have seen at this restaurant was not working and it seemed as if the staff this night was overwhelmed and a bit inexperienced. I was hosting guests on a time restraint, and a bit embarrassed with the wait and service but otherwise had great experiences at this restaurant.
Bathroom shared with the Starbucks next door is awkward and dirty.
Worst experience ever. 40 minute waiting at the table, no menu, nothing to drink. Lots of excuses. After attend sharp to the reservation time, the host even said a word. The table beside us tried to help calling the waiter, no moves and they recommend us better to leave. Terrible!!!
The worst restaurant I've been to in Chicago. Horrible service. Couldn't get a menu, couldn't get bread, couldn't get food. Finally, left after sitting at my table for an hour. Total disaster. I don't know what happened but truly offensive service. Diners should find another restaurant to eat at.
I should have known we were in trouble when our party of 5 was seated at a 4 top. Service was very slow. Server was disoriented. We saw several tables up and leave. We waited 20 minutes before a server even approached us and then asked us what type of water we wanted (tap) then walked away without taking our drink order... another 10 minutes before anyone approached us again. Service improved only after they called in another server who worked the day shift to help.
Table next to us got their side dishes served before their meals....and the server said.."oh you wanted these with your meal?" Lol
The only bright spot was the food. Quite good, but 2.5 hours! Yikes.
Great dinning experience, very flavorful food, you can tell they care about the customer. Recommended
Great food & service; they cater to your needs, & don't rush you. Neighborhood crowd & friendly staff.
We hadn't been to Pane Caldo since they moved their location. While the food was still just as good, the service was inadequate and the restaurant was mostly empty. Don't believe we'll be going there again.
Value would have better if we could have found a Chardonnay for less than $80! Caprese and beet salads were both excellent.
We had not been to Pane Caldo since they moved from Walton to Chestnut. Very glad they are back. We had a lovely dinner and excellent service. We will definitely come back.
Great neighborhood gem. Delightful start with delicious breads and excellent martinis. Grilled calamari with shrimp was excellent & highly recommend it. Pappardelle beef ragu was quite good as was the veal dish. Service was top notch - so all in all a great meal.
