It seems as if Pasteur was once a restaurant that the owners really cared about, but now are looking to retire by not putting anything into the place, but giving a darn what waiters and waitresses they hire. The food was fine, but the waitstaff was indifferent and incompetent. The chairs were worn, the menus tatty, and lots of lightbulbs were out. Sad overall.
Maybe the worst restaurant experience of my whole life
They are going out of business...not enough staff, no wine list. Two plus hours to get our entree. Six tables up and left. This is a shame for a restaurant that still sells wonderful food!
No wine list and Motown music was blasting away in a Vietnamese restaurant. A person in my party asked for salt and pepper and our truly bizarre waiter exclaimed that no one had made that request in his 7 years working at the restaurant. And then he brought 2 salts and no pepper! Maybe the man bun was restricting the blood flow to his cranium but I will not be making a return trip to Pasteur.
One of the worst dining experiences ever. We walked in and wait a couple of minutes to be seated. We were then seated next to a table containing dirty dishes that never got cleared away. We waited about 10 minutes for a waiter to come over and take our drink order. We then waited another 10+ minutes for the drink to be delivered. When it did not come, we stood up and headed for the door. The waiter intercepted us and asked us what was wrong. We mentioned the slow service, the lack of drink delivery and the dirty table. He did not seem really flustered by this and we then left for good. The restaurant was not crowded at all. We wanted a 7:30 reservation, but the closest we could get on Open Table was 8pm. So we took it. We were very surprised to walk into the restaurant and see it 1/3 full at 8pm . There is no way that a 7:30pm reservation should have been not available. This used to be a great restaurant. It is no longer. We will not return.
Dining at Pasteur was a horrible experience. First, although we had a reservation and the restaurant was almost empty when we arrived, the host who was also the waiter and the bus boy, told us we could not have a 4 top, as they were all reserved. THIS WAS AN OUTRIGHT LIE, as there were many 4 tops available when we left. Second, the food was awful, tasteless and over priced. Not even close to how it was described on the menu. For example, the breading on the Tom Lan Bot Chien (Shrimp Tempura), was thick and greasy. The broth in the Pho Rau Cai (Vegetable Noodle Soup) was weakand tasteless, and I had to ask for the normal vegetables, bean sprouts, etc. (there was 1 piece of an old lime and 3 slices of jalapeno. The entrees were worse. There was one waiter, who was also the host and bus boy. Needless to say the service was terrible. Third, there was no heat---there was one electric heater for the entire restaurant. We will never return to this dump and neither should you.
Service was good, food was delicious with some good vegetarian options. My only suggestion for improvement is it would be good if they offered brown rice as an alternative to white rice
À very good experience.
Food was good, service slow (had to skip ordered dessert), some bathrooms were broken//loses. Ugly sight of some
Remodelling/ storage leading up the staicase.
Poor service, 20 minutes in before anyone even cared to speak to us and take drinks order, took almost an hour more to get our dinner
Kitchen seemed to be struggling with orders. Mine was done wrong and had to go back. Waiter was super apologetic. Table next to us could not seem to get there food. Mango Mojito was awful!
Great food, spacious seating, and quiet. The food is beautiful, tasty, and an excellent value.
I was here years ago and have been meaning to go back. So glad I did. The food is great. And affordable compared to Le Colonial. Highly recommend. The lamb dish was so yummy The spring rolls so very fresh.
Great service, great food, not noisy
They only had 1 server for every customer there during our reservation. Felt sorry for her-she had to seat people (where’s host), she had to take orders, she had to bring water, bus tables and set up. Food came out slow. One table got up and left because of all this. How does owner/management allow this to happen? Are they not doing well?
Due to understaffing, our experience was a disaster. It took more than half an hour for our orders to be taken. It took another half hour before our drinks were delivered and we sat in the restaurant For an hour and a half until our entrées were served. The staff was apologetic, but the experience was unsatisfactory. Many tables walked out, for which I don’t blame them. I have no incentive to return.
Sitting at a table for four near the bar, David, one of the bartenders, took care of us. We spent over three hours there in one of the most delightful, truly leisurely and superb meals we've had in a long time. We never felt pressured and never ignored. The drinks were excellent. The appetizers were wonderful (Japanese eggplant, the crepe, spring rolls) and we got around to a superb main course of curry-roasted duck (x 2), passion fruit salmon and bird's nest seafood, all fresh, delicately spiced and really tasty. Would so go back to sample more dishes and to patronize such a wonderful local restaurant that's both elegant and accommodating; one of the best we've been to in some time.
The food was absolutely delicious and we appreciated the attentive but not intrusive service. The decor was elegant but comfortable.
Food was very good though not quite as good as last time I was here and they were short staffed so service was s but slow
We had a wonderful experience at Pasteur. The restaurant is very attractive but the courtyard where we ate is one of the most beautiful in Chicago! In addition the food was delicious and the service friendly and efficient. there were 4 of us and we shared several dishes including traditional and superbly prepared dishes like the lemongrass chicken and spring rolls as well as more unusual dishes like the CoChinChin and whole fried red snapper. All were first class and we had a wonderful evening! The servers gaveus accurate and excellent suggestions about the more unusual dishes. The drinks are sophisticated and well. This is a neighborhood gem good for n=many occasions!
We loved it! Went there to celebrate a birthday. Sat on the bar side and had a great time. Excellent food, comfortable chairs, great service. Can't wait to go back!
This is one of my favorite restaurant in Chicago. Good service, nice atmosphere, good food, easy street parking and public transportation, patio seats are available, too.
Our server was absolutely wonderful, I should have asked his name.
Excellent food. Creative menu. Bar service very good and friendly. Chef Dan Nguyen is very good. Recommend highly.
I have been eating at Pasteur for years. The decor is pleasant, the food is never disappointing, and the price is right.
The one issue is service. Saturday I took my boyfriend out for a bday dinner for which I had a reservation and coming in no host in sight to greet us, no bartender nor staff to be seen. After 5 min of this a waiter arrived and could not find our reservation.
He then forgot the sauce that goes with our appetizer.
Super aggravating. The menu display outside the restaurant could use some TLC. It is one of those places where if you love the food you keep going but the service tends to be hit or miss....
It’s not what it was. It’s OK but not the best Vietnamese in town like it used to be. Go to le colonial instead
Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner there. Lovely space, excellent food, lovely service. Not entirely sure why someone gave them 1 star and didn't like flavoring. Perhaps they should spend more time at Red Lobster.
Fantastic quiet dinner in the enclosed patio area. Service was attentive without being intrusive. Loved the clay pot entrees and the duck curry.
Patio was just lovely and Mark always makes us feel so welcome. I had a delicious whole Branzini boned and in a spicy pepper sauce which was just terrific! My friend had the duck in red curry that he really enjoyed. The salmon egg rolls were different and tasty. The wine was very reasonable and light.
I also adore the inside decor which is just beautiful!
took friends from out town and it was delight dining time.Evreyone enjoyed the meal and my 3 friends all commented that the choice, Pasteur, was a very good choice..All went well.
Love it here - interesting, different menu. Very good flavors. Be careful of spice in your order (ask first). Tasty! And great value!
If it were possible to remove flavor from food, Pasteur seems to be the one to have discovered the secret of how to do it. Nice staff though.
Such great food and ambiance. We are in the outdoor area in the back. Waiter did a good job, but they were understaffed that evening. Understandable.
On the surface Pasteur looks like a beautiful restaurant. My husband and I came here for our 1st year anniversary and as we were immediately captured by the decor. We walked in and stood at the front before being greeted this took roughly 3 minutes ( we had a reservation), my husband even called their phone number trying to get their attention. We were sat, it wasn't busy only a couple of tables. I have no idea what our waitress name was and she hardly knew anything regarding the menu. Our appetizers ( egg rolls) were over cooked and tasted like frozen boxed egg rolls, my husband ordered a whole fish entree and the fish came out smelling really foul. We returned both entrees because at this point the restaurant didnt care about the quality of food they choose to serve us, we paid for the egg rolls and left. Pasteur looks like a beautiful restaurant but really it's not...they don't dust or wipe down the chairs. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.
Amazing food, atmosphere, and value. Service was great. We’ll be back!
One of our favorites in Edgewater. We've dined there three times in the past two years. Love the outside patio. The food is wonderful.
This was my first visit to Pasteur in a few years, and it seems to have adopted a new format--less fine dining and more an everyday meal--including the prices (less expensive than before), menu (smaller and less fancy then previously), and ambiance (white paper over the white table cloth). We ordered the fresh spring rolls, which were fresh and flavorful, the chicken curry (a little bland and nothing to recommend it), and the beef cubes (good flavor and nicely presented, but not outstanding). My standby favorite, the short ribs, were gone from the menu. For dessert, we enjoyed the warm tapioca pudding with bananas---a large serving and not too sweet. In retrospect, I was expecting the old Pasteur, so I was a disappointed that the experience was not as special as it had been previously. But I did like the new prices...and the food and service were sufficiently good that I'll return to give it another chance.
Some of the best spring rolls I’ve had, and good service. It’s a beautiful setting and high quality food.
The food is solid. But it took 50 minutes to even take our food order and another 100 to get the food. They were clearly incredibly understaffed (bartender was also waiting every table), but there was barely an explanation or apology until we confronted them 2 hours in. They should've just closed for the night. Best part: they offered to comp the drinks when only 1/5 of us had even ordered anything except water. Not going back.
The combination of great food and the ability to carry on a conversation without having to shout over loud music made for a very pleasant evening. Everything we ordered was delicious and well-presented. The only shortfall was service was a tad slow, especially when ordering drinks. Even so, we will definitely return.
