Ports of Italy is one of our favorite dining venues. They never disappoint and this time was not exception. My veal and mortadella ravioli was outstanding as one of my husband's Bolognese. Looking forward to returning when they reopen next spring.
Service was slow, many of us going to a concert that night but we waited for a while, had to ask for water and waited about 15 minutes after being seated if we wanted a drink (that's when we asked for water.) Otherwise, outstanding.
First time dining at this restaurant. We had an early reservation for dinner prior to attending a performance. The restaurant staff was great for making sure we would be able to leave at a particular time. I appreciate good food, and thought the food was quite good. Also, it was served nice and hot which is important to us. One of the salad specials was a seafood salad -- it was wonderful! Only complaint was having to wait a little too long before someone arrived at our table to take drink orders. After that, all was prompt. Certainly would go back for some great italian f
As a self proclaimed food snob and general cynic of tourist town restaurants, I was truly impressed with every dish we had delivered to our table.
The service was excellent, the food high caliber and plentiful. A lot of special touches at this lovely spot. The decor could use some decorator magic but the food more then made up for it. Prices super reasonable too!Would definitely look forward to coming back here!
We live near the Boothbay Harbor area and had never tried Ports of Italy. We were pleasantly surprised. The decor and ambiance were nothing to rave about but the food was excellent. Josh our waiter was knowledgeable and attentive. Truffle season is in bloom so we splurged on the half portion risotto with white truffles and it was terrific. Pasta (all house made) was excellent and a terrific wine list. The only disappointment was the fennel salad, it needed seasoning and some vinegar or more citrus to brighten the flavors. They are closed for the winter, but will def try again in the spring, before the tourists descend!
The ambiance was tastefull, staff extremely polite and knew their menu, great wine list and the food was incredible. A wonderfull evening
We made a quick trip to Boothbay Harbor specifically to try out Ports of Italy and were not disappointed. The food and service was great!
We didn't know what to expect of an Italian restaurant on the Maine coast, but this place could easily have been somewhere in Italy. The staff were almost all from Italy, but spoke very serviceable English. The wait staff worked as a team and were very attentive and polite. We thought the service was awesome. We also thought the food was excellent. We had the Caprese Salad and it was to die for; we highly recommend it. We had an Italian red wine, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, that was excellent. One of us had the meat lasagna special, and the other had the rigatoni with eggplant; both were excellent, too. All in all, we had a very enjoyable, and flavorful, evening.
We weren't expecting fantastic from any restaurant in a tourist town like Boothbay Harbor, but Ports of Italy blew us away. Our server very kindly advised us to reduce the size of our order (despite our protests that we were STAHVING!) but splitting appetizer, pasta, entree and dessert worked out perfectly. We loved the house-made spinach ravioli with butter and sage -- as good as what we'd recently had in Bologna -- and the wild mushrooms on the veal made that dish sing. Panna cotta made a festive but not too heavy finish to the meal. We went to Boothbay for the Botanical Garden, and we'd definitely go back both for the Garden and to eat at Ports of Italy.
After reading reviews on Trip Advisor and looking at the restaurant's web site; made on-line reservation. Super evening, greeted by owner, great table, food was excellently prepared and presented. Wait staff was friendly, informative, and attentive to our needs. Couldn't have asked for a better experience. Only drawback was that we were tourists and won't be able to return often. Makes us wish we were locals.
Greeted with enthusiasm!! First off, excellent wine list. We also started off the their signature martini, had chambord floated on top. So happy that Stefanie from the Harbour Towne Inn Bed and Breakfast suggested this restaurant and we are so glad she did! The staff works in teams and makes everyone feel special. The food was out of this world. We had the fresh pan seared halibut, sauted in beurre blanc sauce, black trumpet and lobster mushrooms and my wife had pan seared salmon cooked and topped with sundried tomatoes, orange, and balsamic! We will definitely be back. Ciao!
expensive for an italian restaurant
very small restaurant with limited parking
enclosed deck with the plastic sheeting in place makes it Very noisy.
Whether a local or just passing through the area, you can't go wrong choosing Ports of Italy! The lamb shank & porchetta entrees were so delicious & the portions so generous, we took extra care to put our leftovers on ice for the 5 hour trip home- much to yummy to leave behind! Make reservations & be prepared to wait a bit but it's totally worth it!
The food and service at Ports of Italy were outstanding. The extra touches in terms of presentation just added to enjoyment of the dishes.
Our group ordered a varied menu, and we shared bites of each. Every dish was tasteful and interesting. The wait staff was professional and friendly, and the wine selection excellent. We will definitely keep this as a 'must visit' location.
We have been to Ports of Italy at least 8 times over 10 years and have never been disappointed. This time we had swordfish two different ways: rolled around a breadcrumb and anchovy center, and topped with chopped tomatoes and onions. Both arrived perfectly cooked and beautifully plated, accompanied by garlic mashed potatoes and broccoli rabbe. Our waitress suggested an excellent supertuscan to complement the food. Desserts were a rich chocolate mousse and peppermint gelato. Service is friendly and skillful. We were in a small room off the main room, which was a bit quieter than the lively main dining room, and comforting to weary travelers. Looking forward to one more meal there before leaving for home.
This restaurant was recommended by two locals and we were really disappointed. We made reservations for 8PM on a Fridaay night, off season. My wife ordered one of the specials and was informed that they were out of it. No problem, she ordered another entree. Our friend and I had a big surprise when a different waitress brought us dishes that we had not ordered. We told her that was not what we had ordered and she left. Shortly after that our regular waiter returned with the same entrees and informed us they had run out of the entrees we had ordered. We were good sports about it because we were hungry but obviously wouldn't reommend this resaurant. The food was just okay and fairly expensive.
The food was excellent, authentic Italian fare. Top notch products. The veal melted in your mouth and the pasta was the real deal.
Staff was friendly and attentive. Great wine selection. Unfortunately we were to full to try the deserts that were going by and looking so tasty.
Definitely will be returning and hopefully soon.
Everything was pretty much perfect! It was like going back to Italy.
On a recent vacation to Boothbay, we needed a place to stop for dinner. I had chosen Ports of Italy based on online reviews. I was not disappointed. The food was outstanding, and the servers were very attentive. Also, one of our party was in a wheelchair, and they were more than accommodating. My only regret is that I don't live closer so I could enjoy this restaurant more often.
We decided to get the veal saltimboca and a 1/2 serving of homemade pasta to share --- it was still a large amount of food. Both dishes were very good. It was a bit hectic near the table at which we were seated --- right near the kitchen, restaurant entrance, and server station. Even tnough we had reservations and arrived a little early we were placed in that location while booths were left empty for special customers --- at least, they seemed to be treated that way. Oh well, I guess some people are treated better than others.
As we traveled throughout coastal Maine, we sampled many wonderful meals of all types. Looking back on our adventure from Portland to Acadia, we have noted that the meal at Ports of Italy was beyond compare. The service was excellent. The menu was fabulous and the food was absolutely delicious. We give it five stars - from the management of the restaurant, the service to the excellent food. All was superb. Not to be missed!! Make a reservation!
The male host that seated us should smile more and be more friendly.
Ordered prosciutto and melon- the melon was fresh and succulent. My agnolotti Di Vitello was light and airy and perfectly seasoned. My husband was making yummy sounds over his lasagne. We topped it off with cannoli-- the best we've had since Taoromina, Sicily. They make it fresh every afternoon. Service was very good and the place was packed. Reservations are a must--they were turning people away
While traveling, found Ports of Italy thru Open Table. Even at 8pm on a stormy night, this place was hopping! Every thing, including the service, was outstanding & we've already rebooked for October! The only hiccup was that although we'd requested a quiet table upon booking, we were first offered a table immediately adjacent to a raucous birthday party of about 15-20 revelers! The host found us an excellent table in another room & all was perfect!
I have eaten here many times and have always enjoyed the experience. This trip the cold seafood salad was superb and swordfish entree was perfectly cooked, moist, not dried out. Tony, our waiter, is always excellent despite the busy night.
I am Italian and I'm always a bit scared of going in an Italian restaurant when I'm outside Italy. This time I positively impressed for the good quality both of the starter(eggplant and ricotta rolls) and the entrees(homemade pasta al nero di seppia). The only thing that was a bit dry was the tiramisù, but overall it was a great dinner what we had! The waiter was also very funny, always attentive, he was trying to fake the italian accent and saying some random words in Italian, he made us laugh a lot :)
Excellent food, great service, a must do while in Booth Bay!!
Service was great! Though for the price value of what we ordered to eat, we left there still hungry! I had the lobster ravioli and my wife had the spinach ravioli. For an Italian resturant at the price we paid for the meal the salad should have been included. There should have either been more on the plate or charge less!
Homemade pasta devine! Excellent service. My sister and I had a lovely dinner there.
We spent out 53rd anniversary at POI. Our dinner was wonderful from the service to the digestivo. We love the menu and attentive service. Their POI martini is one of our favorite drinks.
The bruschetta has the perfect amount of garlic; the focaccia is impossible to resist. This time we had the vitello and mortedella ravioli as our primo piatti followed by the porketta. The pana cotta and vin santo ended a perfectly marvelous dinner. Will certainly return before they close for the season. Delishioso!
The food was outstanding. Everyone in our group of five was very happy with their selections. The service was over the top with even the owner visiting the table several times. It felt like they went out of their way to show us a great time. The wines were great and reasonable too. Two in our group had special dietary issues (dairy) and they took the time to help select items for them, which was easy since all items are fresh and prepared there.
This place was so good we came back the next night!!!
The food is delicious and artfully served. The waitstaff are extremely attentive and make you feel very special. We like to bring our friends to dine here and celebrate special occasions at Ports of Italy. The owner needs to work on being more cordial to people coming in to his restaurant though, he tends to be very abrupt and rude until you are at your table and dining. Even with this concern, we will be back.
Been to Ports of Italy many times and never disappointed. Food and service is out standing.
I had one of the most superb meals I've ever had! We began with Affettato Misto (Prosciutto di Parma, salami, capocollo, goat cheese, olives & aged ricotta). The meats were excellent and the cheeses absolutely outstanding. My dinner of pistachio-crusted halibut was simply one of the best things I've ever eaten (in the US, Montreal, Ottawa, France, Belgium and Germany, I've enjoyed many a memorable meal). The halibut was completely crusted with pistachios, and it was a true crust, with fabulous flavor. The fish itself was moist, tender & flaky; if there is one moment when fish is perfectly done but not overcooked, the chef captured that moment. It was a meal that I will never forget, and my companion's Veal Marsala was equally superb.
Restaurant was excellent. Parking PITA ,paid $10.00 to park because there was nothing else.
Craving Italian - Italian food instead of American-Italian? This is your place.
Our waiter Josh, made our night. He was exceptional....only word to describe him. He and the food made our night. We have told all our friends who are going up in September to make sure they go to this restaurant.
Excellent lasagna and veal. We were seated immediately. Quick service, well-organized operation. Nice upstairs deck overlooking the harbor. Great overall dining experience.
Our waiter, Josh, was knowledgeable and patient. The food was very good and well plated.
