Finally ate here after all the years of walking past it when I worked down the street! Celebrated my birthday with my family (hubs and two kiddos, ages 8 & 10). My son commented on how we got the best (and only booth) seat in the house - which he loved. Staff was attentive and really nice! Portions were larger than I had expected for tapas style and the food was delicious.
Food was spot on. Service was extra slow.
One dish, a purée made primarily of beans, was too bland and pasty. But everything else was quite good
A very reliable night out. Informal but very skillful; very unusual wine list
I have eaten at A Cote many times over the years, and this is the first disappointing experience I've had there. The mussels and frittes are favorite, but this time the frittes were a bit soggy. The chicken dish was heavily breaded and not tasty. The waiter was new to the job, and did try to be helpful, but he interrupted our conversation a few times in ways that were annoying. Finally, the restaurant has only a few places for parties of 2, and they are crammed near the front.
Generally the service is exceptional but for some reason the wait staff seemed off that night. Food I’d always a+
A Cote used to be a wonderful date spot, but it's clearly gone downhill over the past five years or so. The service and the ambiance are great, but the food simply isn't. The restaurant's attempt to incorporate more unusual European cuisines is admirable, but it doesn't mean much when the food is subpar. High prices plus poor quality is not a winning combination.
On our most recent visit, we were served seared tuna that was cold and tough, served over a bed of bland hummus-like sauce. The croque monsieur was soggy, and the ham wasn't very good; it tasted like packaged lunch meat. It wasn't all bad, though. The pommes frites were excellent, as was the sausage flatbread.
We've been going to A Cote for 15 years, but I think our last visit was our final visit. A shame, as it used to be a jewel in the Rockridge dining scene.
Food was very "meh" I should have checked Michelin and not just yelp. Green Goodess salad was heavy pile of lettuce with peas on top (?); Pork chop was fine; profiteroles with ice cream well intended but enormous. 3 hockey puck size profiteroles filled with ice cream. way too big. Almond cake dessert with blackberries was nice and light. Server and busser seemed stoned.
The waiter was outstanding. Not at all arrogant - instead informative. A tricky balance when dealing with the obscure wine list. Great recommendations! Attentive service overall.
Only improvement- more salt on most of the dishes. Unanimous from all four diners, two who are food professionals (Resataurant and specialty).
Always a fantastic option in Oakland.
Delicious seasonal menu. Excellent wine. Patience with my questions about ingredients (there was a word I didn’t recognize, turns out it’s an amazing cheese stuffed inside of focaccia!). Go here; it’s a real treat.
This was my husband's and my first time at A Cote. We were looking for a french restaurant, and while the menu overall is more "European" as they say, this fit. The food was very good--we had the mussels and french fries, a sausage flatbread (pizza), ceviche to start and ricotta fritters for dessert. All really delicious, and fairly priced. The staff was all very friendly and helpful, but we were rushed from the time we sat down, and our reservation was at 6:30 on a Monday night, so the restaurant wasn't full or very busy. They brought all the food at once before we were done with the first thing, brought our bill before we'd asked or even finished dessert, and the server nearly took the dessert menu out of my hands while I was still deciding... it was a little odd being so rushed in a half empty restaurant. The restaurant is pretty dark too, but I guess that's the ambiance they're going for. Overall I would still recommend as it's a nice neighborhood spot for a good meal. They also have a bar (and full bar service).
I brought a large group from out of town so most had never dined at A Cote. They enjoyed the flavors, the ambience, and the freedom to try many dishes at an outstanding value. The wine is always an adventure - with unexpected choices. Delicious!
The mussels were fantastic- a good dish to share. The king cod was a bit dry but very nicely spiced and presented. The cocktails are interesting variations on standards such as the white Negroni - overall a pleasant fine dining experience in a relaxed atmosphere.
My son and I joined my wife to celebrate her birthday. It was an exceptional dining experience. The food was very good and the service was excellent. We especially appreciated the number of different people servicing are table.
We have been coming to A Cote since it opened. It remains my favorite restaurant, fall, winter spring or summer. Best food. Best bar. Best service.
I love A Cote for a special occasion dinner. The small plates, which change seasonally, are always tasty and a bit unusual. Those small plates add up quickly though. You can easily spend more than you'd planned. The service is always great, and the outside deck is a quiet place to dine.
This is our favorite neighborhood restaurant. It's hard to give a review of the food because we always order the same thing...mussels with pommes frites. Both are perfection...definitely the best mussels around. We discovered that from Mon. to Thurs. they have an early bird special that includes mussels, pommes frites and a glass of wine. The portion size of the mussels is smaller than a regular order but with a few shared appetizers and a shared dessert it was plenty and is a really good deal. The three of us shared two appetizers. The stuffed squash blossoms were very good. The antipasto platter was not bad, but not up to the standard of the rest of the meal. For dessert we shared a brownie topped with ice cream and caramel sauce. We all agreed it was yummy. We sat out on the patio and the heaters kept us very comfortable. I think it is quieter on the patio and that the ambiance is better.
We sat in the back area and that was very nice; the server, who had only worked there a month, was good. We liked the flat bread filled with cheese accompanied by a salad. The other 2 items, squash blossoms and cauliflower with wheatberries were ok.
Amazing food, wonderful wine, lovely ambiance and friendly, informed servers. Loved it!
Mussels were terrific, large and flavorful, sauce amazing. Stuffed focaccia also great, cheese filling tangy as advertised, focaccia thin and crisp. Avoid the strawberry panzanella with olive oil mousse though. Nothing special or worse. Nice atmosphere. We could hear each other, lighting was low, and service excellent.
Always great! Love to go there.
It was good, certainly an experience worth saving your appetite for. Thought the wine selection was great international variety, but expensive and you don't get that much wine. Recommend sitting outside!
we were a table of 5. a couple arrived after a bit the reservation but a cote was more than ready to seat those of us who arrived on time. the timing of the food, the cocktails, wines, beers could not have been better. no one in our party felt rushed, we were allowed to take our time, enjoy the patio, converse those that were gathered around the table. all in all a very pleasant, comfortable evening at a cote.
Food was all imaginative and delicious. But tables are too close together and noise level was disappointing high. Spent my birthday straining to hear my husband. Not the hoped for special evening!
Our server knew how to help us with a very complicated wine list- it was perfect!
Excellent place for date night!!! Great food and great wine.
My husband and I were celebrating our anniversary.
We researched many places to go and celebrate and were able to make an 8pm reservation via Open Table at 7:30 and noted our anniversary.
Our server was very nice and informed us everything was meant for sharing. After ordering 1 small plate and 2 large plates to course out, we waited 40 + minutes for our first course, the mussels, which were amazing!! While waiting for the mains, the food runner was slamming down candle votives on the wall next to our table- very intrusive.
Our main steak dish was delivered in the middle of the table with no share plates or serving utensils. Our server was obviously busy but we were left to pick at the dish in the middle of the table with our forks and no plates. The food runner then dropped our pasta dish with no serving spoon, share plates or the opportunity for us to let him know we needed share plates, which was obvious. We had to run after our server to tell her we needed plates and I had to stop the manager on duty for a serving spoon for the pasta shells.
After almost 2 hours for 3 dishes, we needed to get home to pick up our 10-month old daughter and no one acknowledged our anniversary. We asked our server for the check which she dropped. We put our credit card immediately on the book, my husband went to the restroom and then I went to the restroom and the card was still not processed. Our server walked by 2 more times before my husband got up and followed her to the station asking to pay. To which, she responded “Great” and took the bill.
After poor service and poor attention to detail I’m shocked that our server wasn’t more apologetic or considerate of our wait time. The manager brought our processed check and thanked us but our server never did. We will not be back.
This was a disappointing evening, and we have been to this restaurant many times. The table was sticky and had not been cleaned carefully. My entree came 10 minutes before my husbands entree. Needless to say that did not make for a good dining experience. His entree, a sausage was mostly eggplant an very little sausage. The dessert fritters were as always good. Too bad, this was a very busy Saturday and the kitchen could not keep up with the demand.
Quality of food was very good. Selection was not to my liking.
Everything was delicious. We had the steak, pork sausage and duck.
Was just talking with friends about never having had a less than great experience at A Cote. Well, this wasn’t an A+ meal. Service was great; loved our waiter. Mussels, fries, nectarine & prosciutto flatbread always winners. But then we tried two sides - a roasted summer vegetables & a couscous dish. Couscous was dry & unpleasant. Vegetable dish was boring. Focaccia de Recco was OK, nothing to write home about. My first somewhat disappointing meal at A Cote. Bummer.
Great wine selections... lots of special regions and countries.
The food was great and the service was exactly what we needed. Thanks
Every dish is delicious and unique. The wines are a phenomenal experience. For flavors that are totally unique to the bay, go here soon. Love'd it and will be back.
Loved the almond-grape soup!
Lucked out and scored the cute booth in the back...the restaurant is dark and dreamy and it’s fun to settle in, try lots of different wines and dishes family style - all round great experience!
The food, ambiance and most off the staff especially the manager were super kind and wonderful. Our waitress just ruined the night for us she is a settlement to the place.
Really disrespectful and self inflated. Sad for an otherwise wonderful restaurant.
I cannot recommend the place until they correct her or remove her.
The food was excellent and our server struck the perfect balance between being attentive without being intrusive.
THE WINE LIST IS FOOLISH... NOT WELL ORGANIZED AND OVERLY EXPENSIVE FOR WHAT THEY HAVE... FOOD VERY POORLY COOKED... WIFES DUCK WAS WAY OVERCOOKED, COUSCOUS WAS MUSHY. MY ZUCCHINI BLOSSOMS WERE NO CHRISP INDEED OVER BATTERED AND TOUGH, MY CRUDO SLIMMY AND BAD TASTING
WE, WIFE AND I, SHALL NOT RETURN EVEN THOUGH IT IS A 5 MINUTE WALK FROM OUR HOUSE
A Cote has gone downhill. Restaurant is extremely dark, even during daylight hours to the point where it is difficult to read the menu or even see the food! Salmon was over cooked and tough; table for two so small there wasn’t enough room for water and wine glasses and our plates once entrees, served family style were added. Service good but didn’t make up for the ambience and food.
