Excellent restaurant with perfectly cooked steaks. Plenty of service staff so no difficulty in getting attention if necessary.
One piece of advice - whoever chose the background music should be made to sit and listen to it for 90 minutes. Because of the general noise of the restaurant all you can hear is an incessant base beat and nothing else. Minor problem but should be addressed.
It was well worth the money it was the best steak Iv have ever had it was amazing
We had a brilliant time and the food was excellent, a shame the wine we wanted wasnt available however following valentines day, it's understandable as to why some things would be sold out. We couldn't fault the waitress who served us, she was superb!
Food was amazing, service also great. Venue is an little hidden gem ☺️🥩
Most restaurants tend to provide poor customer service and food tends to suck on special days such as Valentine’s Day, Easter, Christmas etc because they will be too busy. However, I was really impressed on Valentine’s Day that Alston Bar & Beef did not allow that to ruin their reputation and kept up to high standard in terms of their food and staff. Although the food was a little bit late, it was definitely worth the wait. I would have been upset if I waited for an hour and the food was rubbish.... Also they didn’t try to scam us with service charge, they made their service charge option... I am definitely going back soon
Food was top quality. Service was brilliant. Looking forward to eating here again in the near future.
Service was great and informative when asked for advice on the menu. Scallops starter with chorizo was amazing as was the cauliflower pakora. We came specially for the Steaks and they did not disappoint.
As with a lot of the restaurants in the city the drinks are somewhat over priced. But on the whole a great experience with top quality food.
Brilliant service and exceptional food would definitely visit again
Excellent service and very friendly staff.
Gorgeous Sunday lunch.
Not many other diners probably due to the weekend storm.
Excellent place, lovely Sunday lunch (2 for 1) which was great value. Ross who served us was very knowledgeable and gave good advice on wine and gin selections. Very pleased with our visit, would book again. Many thanks.
As ever the service & steak outstanding but I have to say that I found the choice of starters limited. Lots of fish, but other than that a great night!
Great food , fab service... thank you Ross ... and just an all round great meal .... will be back for sure
Lovely staff, great gin, very relaxed, very nice and cheap set menu, tonic a bit dear only downside
Probably the best steak in manchester, absolutely fantastic meal.
Opted for the sunday dinner - 2 - 4 - 1 deal. The food was excellent, really tasty beef, everything was very rich. Would have liked a little more veg and the cauliflower cheese was so rich it was a little too much alongside the other food.
Would definitely return though
Fabulous food, best steak I have had in a lonnng time, staff were lovely too, very welcoming. We will be back for sure.
The food and wine were amazing, as was our waiter Cezar. My only negative comment is the seating, it's all a bit close together!
Lovely food as always. The three courses for £18 offer is well worth having. I have eaten here a few times now and I would recommend this place to anyone.
Absolutely brilliant! The staff were lovely and the food was absolutely incredible! The flat iron ha the quality of a fillet steak! The starters were beautiful!
The set menu is, in my opinion, the best value for money in Manchester right now!
Visited on a Monday Lunch with work colleagues. Fantastic food, cooked to perfection, great service, lovely atmosphere - would defiantly recommend a visit.
Really amazing meal, it's definitely not going to be the cheapest steakhouse style restaurant you go to but the service and ambience are absolutely perfect.
It definitely earns it's place as a romantic layout, music was loud enough to listen to without reaching levels where you needed to speak up. It met the mood that was needed while still keeping a trendy tune.
Food was almost entirely perfect, the fat on the steaks could have been cooked through using the right techniques but if the fat doesn't bother you, the steak was otherwise perfect - moist, succulent, lovely taste, cooked nicely when both rare and medium done (we both had it cooked differently).
Service, couldn't fault it. It was close to having two servers coming back and forth without having to look for their attention. Both really well dressed, very attentive, can't call them out on name unfortunately but they did the perfect service - we even had fresh water brought to the table without needing to ask, and the gin cocktails we had were very well made, well done to everyone involved!
Price was the only downfall, but also showed they don't scrimp on quality. There were menu choices that had ran out earlier in the day due to popularity (not that many items though), but this mainly was due to how late in the day we were coming in. As a result, the main menu we picked from was on the more expensive side but I can honestly say that it was well worth the price.
Had the chateaubriand, excellent, cooked perfectly. Staff were friendly and helpful I would recommend to anyone.
Amazing food and very friendly staff
Very nice restaurant, food delicious, service a little slow, and unfortunately our first choice of wine wasn't available
Food was no more than average, beef was a bit tough. Mash was lovely, so was mac and cheese, but we had gone for the beef so a bit disappointing. The service was very poor. We had at least 4 servers coming to our table asking the same question, but then couldn't get someone to get the bill for us. I had to go to the bar to pay, and mentioned this to be told that it wasn't his fault because they were short staffed. The barperson then went on to say how many hours that he'd been working. I didn't need to know this - a simple apology would have sufficed. Won't be going back. Shame.
Ordered a steak which cost £70, it was to share for me and my bf, it came out as 5 slices, if I could put picture up I would, shocking, didn't even taste nice I only give it one star as no star was available
From the online reviews we obviously hit a bad night, BUT our evening was spoilt by the following:
1. We were given a 90 minute slot on our table, it being a Saturday evening, but our main course did not arrive until 10minutes before this was over. By this time we had waited at least 3/4 hour since our starters had been cleared.
2. We had chosen Alston as a place to have a lovely steak, as a special and infrequent treat. The medium rare fillet, when it arrived, was cooked to at least medium (agreed by our waiter), was dry, and not very tasty. The reason I didn't ask for another was purely because the night had already been spoiled by the wait, and I just wanted to eat and leave by then.
3. We ordered 2 sides with our mains. One of them had still not arrived until after we had both finished our mains, despite a very early reminder from us.
4. For all the above (with starters and some wine) we paid £120 for 2 people. Very poor value.
5. Despite the restaurant never being full, we were given a table in the 'annexe' area, which was otherwise empty by the time our mains arrived. Whilst fine as an overflow, this area lacks any ambience, and is made worse by being able to see the soft glow of nice artwork in the main area. I would recommend making sure that you have a table in the main area, unless the restaurant is completely full all evening.Ordinarily I would not have mentioned this, but it was the final straw in a very, very disappointing evening.
I have to mention our waiter, who was obviously aware that we were pretty fed up with the inefficiency of the food preparation. He waived our service charge without prompting. We certainly would not have paid it anyway, which I have never decided in any 'good' restaurant before.
I have never written a poor online review of any restaurant or hotel before, and will also be sending this direct to the restaurant. I hope that others have better experiences; the other reviews would indicate that they do.
Lovely pre-show meal with the family. Steaks are beautiful but quite over-priced not a family meal to enjoy every week but an occasional treat better on the pocket. Think the sides a little over priced £4.50 for a spoon of mash! Nice but pricey.
Booked a pre theatre table for 5:30. Didn’t expect to wait till nearly 6:30 for any food to arrive. Clearly not a place for 3 courses. 1 course in 1.5 hours. Wouldn’t want to be there when it gets busy in the evening. Perhaps not a good option pre theatre
Lovely food but disappointed with the duck, it was tough.
Very lively, friendly venues serving excellent quality steaks and delicious food and drinks in general. Only disappointment was about the desserts which came from a very different place - almost felt like party food for children. Wish we had skipped dessert as it spoilt what had been an excellent meal, served in friendly and helpful manner.
Great from start to finish. Delicious tasty food, good gin, good wine. We ate at 3.15pm and it was a nice busy atmosphere. Ordered 2 espressos at the end, they were only lukewarm so were a disappointment right at the end plus they were a tad overpriced at £2.40 each. Really enjoyed the meal and will come back and bring friends. This was our 2nd visit.
Fantastic restaurant! Great food, lovely atmosphere and good customer service.
Absolutely fabulous, staff wonderful, food delicious- worth every penny.
Can’t praise the staff enough for their service
An overall fantastic experience from the minute we walked in. Great food and staff. Friday £50 deal was brilliant value for money. Will definitely be coming back with friends and family!
After researching for a nice restaurant to visit in Manchester we came across Alston Bar & Beef.
It doesn't look much from the outside but when you go down the stairs and enter the under ground restaurant, we were pleasantly surprised.
We were waited on by Mirko - to say this guy is a wine buff is an understatement. His knowledge of the food was extensive and so was his knowledge of the wine to compliment what was chosen. He recommended the right wine for us and it didn't disappoint.
Although its a bit on the pricey side for steak, it was well worth the money as you tell the quality of the food in the taste.
Will definitely return.
My wife and I absolutely love this restaurant. We brought two friends with us who have only sampled the delights of the downstairs bar back in Dec 2019 for our SPIRIT Xmas Party.
The food we had last night was fantastic. The Tweed Valley Flat Iron steak was cooked to perfection. My wife had Haggis Pakora as a starter and was blown by the flavour to the point she actually wanted another.
Our friends were thrilled with the ambience, the food and we all commented on how good the waiting on staff were.
You’ll always have our custom and we intend to bring more new clients for you as well!
Excellent as always, came for a works meal and we were all delighted, the steaks cooked to each of our likings and our starters had an amazing flavour. Our waitress was friendly and able to provide good suggestions. The barman talked us through their flavours of gin as well.
Great steaks and good selection of drinks. Very friendly and helpful staff. Good atmosphere a great place to eat
