Bar Open for Food/Drinks Until Midnight
Late Night Menu, including Sandwiches & our famous Totes M'Goats Tots
Food is great. Ambience & service are outstanding.
Made a 9:15 reservation not knowing the restaurant closes at 9 was able to get a drink at the bar but I wish open table or ALX would have let me know that 9:15 dinner would not be possible and only the bar and late night snacks were available.
Enjoyed the dinner with friends ... great craft cocktails ! The filet mignon was a hit . Sides come a la carte .... the Mac and cheese was great and the caullini vegetable side dish was interesting but not that tasty.
Ordered the wagyu ribeye steak cap .... expensive and not good at all ... came out very cold center , appearance not appetizing , not even a bit of char , tough texture and very little marbling ... poor quality of wagyu compared to what have eaten in other restaurants serving wagyu ... definitely not worth the price .
That was the one complaint . Otherwise , desserts were complex and delicious , our server was very nice and attentive .
Would go back but will not spend my money on the wagyu !
The restaurant personnel were very helpful and accommodated our preferred time for seating.
My husband and I began our SF evening at ALX. It was a great experience. Our cocktails were unique and delicious. I had the Monk Fizz - yummy! We each a crawfish cake - amazing and so creative. I had the 8 oz. fillet mignon which was rare plus and fabulous. My husband enjoyed his very tasty porchetta. We shared a scrumptious deconstructed chocolate cake - sweet without being too sweet!
We celebrated my boyfriend's birthday at ALX, and the experience was above and beyond what I expected. Our server, Fernando, was very attentive, knowledgeable, and professional. He greeted us with complimentary sparkling wine, and ensured our order came out quickly (but not rushed) because we needed to catch an event. We ordered the steak tartare, octopus, and caviar deviled eggs; we paired these with two reds and were delightfully satisfied. We finished our meal with a special birthday dessert, and left feeling grateful for the entire experience. I would highly recommend ALX to any SF local, or visitor. You will not be disappointed.
Overall great experience. Came in for my anniversary with my boyfriend and was seated immediately and we were about 15min late to our reservation. Our server was polite and respectful and knowledgeable about the drinks and food menus. Everything came out in a timely manner but another customer must have complained about the service and they apologized about making us wait and gave us some free drinks - but we were oblivious to it being late, we had no issues at all. We ended up having a long and nice conversation with one of the servers and had a great time.
The appetizers were a bomb. We were hungry, tried the first 4 in order and loved them all.
The Autumn leaves Salad was a bit sweet but good.
The 32 oz Rib-Eye was a disappointment. We ordered a medium-rare. It looked good with a nice crust but it is a big steak, the inside was not cooked at all. It was very chewy and difficult to even cut. We were not impressed.
Overall, will give it a try again for their other steak cuts and cocktails.
It was great. The room was a little odd as it had no windows and just two doors.
Came for Valentine’s Day for their prefix menu, the veal was the best entre, Definitely would come back for that.
I purchased the dinner voucher from Travelzoo. This was my second time eating at ALX and I had forgotten how tender and delicious the 32 oz rib eye steak was. It was absolutely perfect. We ordered the autumn salad that was wonderful and large enough for two to share. We also enjoyed the Mac and cheese and the cualilini side dishes.
Great dinner and far exceeded our experience at Alexander’s!!
If you like steak houses and don’t want the stuffy ness or dress up, this is a great option! Definitely more laid back atmosphere and great food and drinks. Recommend the burger, Mac and cheese (actually all the sides) and any of the steaks. Great for large groups.
Know what to expect...Alexander steakhouse prices in a bar setting. Inside seats are great but man the top 40 music doesn't match the dining experience. Good wine and great cocktails and the service is terrific.
This place is a little confusing. The food is great, the ambiance is weirdly casual. If you are looking for some upscale food with upscale prices but want to wear a hoodie and listen to early 2000s alternative rock while you eat, then this place is great! In the future I'll stick to enjoying the upscale ambiance that I expect with an $80 steak.
Yes, I would come to ALX with friends hanging out good foods!
We were looking forward to visiting this restaurant, as we had heard good reviews. Unfortunately, we did not have the same experience as others. Service was very slow and inconsistent. Several of our food items were cold by the time they reached our table and had to be sent back to the kitchen. After ordering our drinks, we had to remind our server 3 times, and when they were finally brought to the table, they tasted a bit watered down (again, as if they had been sitting around for a while). That said, the steaks we ordered were well-prepared and tasty, though VERY expensive.
Extremely poor service, food was decent but overall experience was poor. Very slow and lack of response by wait staff on food and drinks. We hosted a 10 person business dinner and would not recommend for a large group when paying over $1k. The group was very disappointed.
Service was a little slower than I expected, and the music was an odd choice - late 90s-early 2000s pop hits LOL. Excellent food though and fun work team celebration dinner. Thanks!
We had a reservation for a business dinner at ALX and we were very excited knowing the pedigree of ALX stemming from the famous Alexander's Steakhouse. After having been seated for 30 minutes, we were only offered water and our orders had not been taken. There was no designated waiter for our table and we had to flag down a server who was milling around to take our order.
The Waygu burgers that we ordered were cold by the time it was served and the request for the burgers to be cooked to medium was more rare with a sear on both sides. None of the servers check on us during the meal and we had flag down another different served to send back our salads as they were way too salty. It became such a hassle throughout the meal to get anything we needed as the servers were just no where to be seen, that we just paid and left after eating a very bizarre churros dessert.
This experience weighs heavily into our decision to have future business dinners at other Alexander steakhouse group restaurants. We were hugely disappointed at the food and especially the service.
We sat at 8:30 for the NYE prix-fixe and did not get to leave until 11pm. Service was absent and slow, although the food itself was good. The open kitchen is great in concept, though the lighting coming from it was harsh in the dining room. Overall value was decent, but we found ourselves waiting to order more wine or extra things far too often, and ultimately going without the extra items we wished to order.
Waiter arrived at our table never introducing himself or sharing the daily specials. He did however inform us of how busy they were which I guess accounts for why he never came back to the table to check on our meals, etc.
Service was poor at best!
The Mac and cheese is amazing. Creamy, strong flavors! The ribeye for two was good and salted well enough, I just think I’m spoiled with Alexander’s Kobe beef. If I come again, I would try their halibut and wagyu sampler.
the decor is very nice and the service is also fine but the food doesn't live up to the alexander's name. the wagyu sampler is disappointing.
ALX by Alexander Steakhouse
I stopped by Alexander’s Steakhouse to pick up some gift cards for my team and in returned received a $20 coupon for ALX in San Francisco and decided to give it a try.
ALX is meant to a more casual restaurant than Alexander’s, featuring American Wagyu beef and according to the manager, less of a Japanese influence on the menu. The first impression was of a lively bar area, with great view of Folsom. Airy and open with an industrial vibe but sparse and a little cold feeling.
My Manhattan was expertly made with a Luxardo cherry.
Service was very sincere and friendly, and the manager took me through the Wagyu selection. 4 oz portions do not a value meal make… I went for the 8 oz Wagyu flight (four 2 ozs selections of their Wagyu).
My wife and I each had a Forbidden Roots salad (a very nice, perfectly-dressed salad) and she had the Torched Tuna appetizer which she polished off. She also had a half dozen oysters with a fruity mignonette which she really liked. (That evening, the oysters were Hook Canals from the Pacific Northwest and sparklingly fresh.)
Dessert was a sweet potato tart spiced to be a faux pumpkin pie, and four brightly-poached figs which were a surprise on a shredded phyllo “nest” on top of goat cheese.
All the plating was pleasing but not noticeable.
The bill with tip was well over $250 for a three course meal with a bottle of Pelegrino and one cocktail. So not a great value for a date night out. However, the star of the restaurant was the food quality and flavor, both of which rose to the level of the price of the evening. I’ll think about ALX for a business lunch, but Alexander’s still is my favorite steak house and if I’m going to splurge and get the value for the money, that will continue to be my first choice.
Service is fantastic, food yummy
The food: the autumn greens salad was the highlight of the evening. plenty of flavor and enough to be a meal. The halibut was tough and dry, and the sauerkraut base added too much salt to the taste. The caulilini was amazing, a great blend of flavor and texture. The baby churros - meh - greasy fried dough with bland flavor and whatever was put on the top didn't add much to the taste.
The service: Montana is one of the most attentive servers. She was pleasant and informative. Even with a large party coming in behind us, she was still available for all our needs. Her assistants were very helpful and quick.
The price: the higher price can't be justified by the amount of food, ambience or, overall feeling. The food was good, but not amazing.
Great place for dinner and happy hour! The food was delicious.
Staff was lovely. Food was amazing. Oysters, wagyu, mac n'cheese YUM!
Service was slow at first, but got better as we started to order drinks etc.
The food was great, and they went out of their way to make sure that we had a nice time.
Waiter and staff amazing and very accommodating!
This restaurant really wasn't great -- the food was cold and not too flavorful and the service was really slow and awkward. Wasn't a great experience and most likely won't go back
Maybe it was just a bad night, but from the moment our party of 5 entered the restaurant until we left it was just a farce. After waiting almost 20 minutes for a drink order, it took another 20 minutes to receive the drinks. Then we were delivered a bread basket with 2 pieces of bread for 5 people. Of the group, two of us ordered the duck, which should have been spectacular, but it was very disappointing. One of us sent it back, I pretended to eat until I felt sick. The other guests thought their meals were only adequate. I've been to Alexander's, so I was definitely expecting the same experience at Alx; that simply did not happen. Will not go back.
The food was not as fresh as hoped. For such an expensive meal, my expectations were not met!
Fantastic. Inventive, perfectly executed. Amazing amalgamation of flavors and textures. Try everything.
It was wonderful! The staff were so attentive!
One of the best bar/dining experiences to be had in the city.
Great food and excellent service
This was our second visit in two weeks. Appetizers and entrees were delicious. However, they may need a new pastry/dessert chef. Really underwhelmed by their desserts, pretty looking but lacked taste.
Good looking steak house nicely located in SOMA. Great bar area with dinner seating in back. Good for all occasions.
Fantastic food and service all around.
