Anchor and Hope
The place was extremely hot and made all of my guests uncomfortable throughout dinner. Portions were small for the price
A very casual place to have really tasty oysters, some very good wines by the glass and yummy chowders. Service was super friendly, and the whole place felt very familiar and comfortable.
Great food but quite noisy.
We had a great time for a birthday celebration with friends. Our server (Sarah) was spot on attentive. Food was outstanding. Negatives: Calamari was a little leathery, but otherwise tasty.
This a well appointed restaurant, redesigned cleverly from an old garage, hidden away in downtown. Our reservation was honored and prompt and seating is comfortable. We started the evening with an amazing selection of oysters on the half-shell paired with a lovely French Crement Rose. There seemed to be only one server on the floor with several assistants so service was a bit sketchy. The petrale sole was slightly overcooked but the steamed mussels were fine. My recommendation? Go for the oysters and bubbles!
Great lunch, took a friend for his birthday. Loved the lobster salad!
Cracking venue, great experience, would recommend
Meh. Food was ok. Maybe nicer to not sit in the corner of the restaurant, should have thought about that when making reso.
Overall would recommend for dinner, as ceviche app., salmon and ribeye were good, but was not cheap and service was slow especially to start. The service was '15% tip', not '20%'. Other menu items liked good too, like clams etc.
I had the blackened shrimp tacos and they were fabulous. Service was outstanding. Can’t wait to go back!
The appetizer was over cooked, the salmon entree was moist however the skin wasn’t eatable the fish & chips batter was heavy & bland the staff was pleasant the kitchen needs help
Got in last minute. The service was excellent and the food was great. We will definitely return- definitely.
Waiter had zero warmth or personality. He seemed to care less about being there.
Had steak but it was flavorless and there were no steak sauce options. Corn chowder was amazing! Very nice servers. Very close to other guests.
There is not much of an ambiance in my point of view and therefore I expected the pricing not as expensive as it was. The food was good, but nothing special. I had the Mussels which were okay I wished for more chorizo and garlic in the sauce. The Service was very good, attentive and friendly. I don't think I would "push" my friends to go there on the other hand I would not say "don't go"
enjoyed the seafood tower and the beer and wine slection. Wished they had liquor
Well balanced menu. Good wine list. Excellent service.
Ceviche is amazing, solid Shrimp cocktail and various small plates of note. Recommend larger on table water containers and chilling the water wouldn't be a bad idea either (or provide ice).
Anchor and Hope has outstanding and creative food. It is also a fun ambience, with great architecture. The wait staff was very efficient, attentive, and nice people. Overall an outstanding lunch.
Reasons to eat here:
1. You like oysters -- appear to be their specialty
2. You like beer-- excellent selection
3. You like wine -- good selections by the glass
4. It's close to your hotel.
Arrived at opening of lunch service. Though the restaurant was nearly empty and we had a reservation, the hostess attempted to seat the two of us in a dark, cramped corner. We were reseated on request. Our server was attentive and professional. On recommendation of a colleague who previously lived in San Francisco we ordered clam chowder, calamari and the lobster roll. Clam chowder was good but over salted as was everything. The calamari we were served looked very different than calamari that came out of the kitchen later and not in a good way. Lobster roll did not taste like it was fresh. In retrospect we wondered if we were served food left over from the previous night's service. Our lunch including a couple of beers and tip was almost $100. It was no where near as good as the $100 dinner we had this evening at an establishment on Fisherman's Wharf. At least the beers and the service were good.
Fantastic location, good food, little pricey.
Fantastic food a service. We celebrated our anniversary, and it was a very memorable evening. Thank you!
We ordered a seafood tower, which was delicious! For a Saturday night, the crowd was a bit light, but the food, drinks and service was great.
Had a nice experience. Will definitely be back. Like the space outdoor/indoor.
Nice food, really let down by the service. Waitress was completely disinterested, oysters ordered as starters showed up after we ate our mains - they were surprised when we no longer wanted them. We were out in less than 45 minutes which is unacceptable for dinner. No one came to check in even though we told the waitress we intended to order wine after our cocktails. In the end they made a small adjustment to the bill but sadly they didn’t seem that concerned about the poor experience we had. The lobster roll and shrimp tacos were actually pretty good but in a city full of dining options I’d say give it a miss and find somewhere else.
We were not given chips
Great restaurant for a business meal. Oysters were fresh, service was great and ambiance was lovely.
Service slow, salmon no taste, shrimp cocktail bland, no soup spoon for soup. Over priced for what u get. Not one to complain but this was horrific. Great place if you want land service and tasteless food.
One night in town an went there as shared the name with a great gastro pub in Southwark London. Lovely evening on my own at the bar eating anchovies, cerviche cod and then some crab appetisers. Super friendly barman and lovely wine list. Highly recommend.
Service was a bit slow - I think they may have been short on staff as everybody was running around. Food was okay. Good for an informal lunch or dinner.
Amazing food here - everything on the menu is amazing. The staff are also very good. Great wine and beer list too.
Food is always great, but I think it’s extremely pricey for what it is.
Enjoy our dinner overall. Service was excellent at the beginning, then tappered off as the evening progressed. Oysters were very good...try the Rocky point oysters, they were especially good. We ordered the Salmon and the mussels. Both were very good. Would consider trying again, but if you just want oysters, get there during happy hour...
Great seafood & drinks, service could be better. Great lunch spot downtown!
Excellent marine fare. Interesting atmosphere. Friendly and attentive servers. Overall, a delightful experience.
Our server was amazing!! The food was great and the wine list was better than expected! The sea food platter is a must !
Given the online reviews we read before choosing this restaurant, I was fairly disappointed. Perhaps this was because of the entrees selected. The first offering of the battered cod and fries (their fish and chips) was a greasy, undercooked mess. When I told the waitress about this, she had the kitchen try again which was much appreciated but overall, this was not a very good rendition of this classic dish. My friend had the lobster roll which was highly touted by the waitress. Again, mediocre at best. If you've had lobster rolls in New England, you'll be disappointed in this one. While I could imagine going to this restaurant again, I'd certainly try something different from their menu.
The food is just okay, kind of what you would expect from a seaside seafood stand but 2x the price. On the plus side, they have a great assortment of beer, a small but reasonable cocktail menu in a nice, converted garage ambiance.
Everything was great , seafood excellent. Just to noisy hard to talk.
