Big Grove Tavern
Solid "farm to table" pub. Atmosphere is great, staff is always on point and food is excellent.
The food came out cold and wasn’t what the menu advertised as the meal
Best burger ever!! Maple bacon doughnut was amazing! Service was ok, never give me my check in the middle of eating my meal.
So delicious! Great service. Definitely go there again.
My wife and I were celebrating our 1 year anniversary and wanted to try a new place, we didnt want too fancy but didnt want the normal big chain "nice" restaurant. Big Grove seemed like the place, and at first it didnt dissapoint. The popcorn they give you while you wait was delicious (I could have taken a whole tub of it!), the drink specials did not dissapoint, and the appetizer we ordered was great. However, during that time we were constantly looking for our waitress to bring out the said items. We ordered both our meat entrees medium, ended up getting them well done at best, the food was possibly sitting under a heat lamp for some unknown reason. My wife ordered a soup with her entree and finally managed to track someone down to give her a spoon to eat that with after about 5 minutes. Mind you our waitress was nowhere to be seen yet still, other people had served our food items. At this point we ate the dissapointing food because we were both so hungry from the wait times. When we were ready to go, we of course had to wait approx 30 minutes just to get our check. As we were waiting we noticed more and more people were having there cards declined. This was because the system was down, we did not have any communication of this. This was of course out of their control, but the way they handled it was poor. After waiting about 10 minutes for our waitress to collect our handwritten card number on a reciept, we grew tired and just wanted out of that place. So we went to the hostess stand and asked they give the reciept to the manager. Im not one for complaining, but disorganization and mediocre customer service are incredibly embarrassing when an establishment charges around 15 dollars for a dry cheeseburger. Extremely dissapointed and needless to say my wife and I both wont be reccomending Big Grove to any of our friends or business associates.
Lovely evening until the restaurant got full, then the noise was overwhelming!
I love to go here for breakfast and lunch, for which I have had great experiences. However, the dinner service is consistently bad. This last time was extremely slow. We had to flag a host to get our servers attention. One of our drinks were incorrect, one did not receive an appetizer until the entree had arrived. Unfortunately this seems to be average as our last experience was similar.
We are not familiar with Champaign so we made this reservation on the internet. The place would be fine for a drink, but food service was very slow and the noise level was very high. Not a place for pleasant dining.
Birthday dinner with friends. Outside dining was nice. Risotto was delicious.
Loved it! Went for brunch with my best friends. Loved the bottomless mimosas :)
The only issue I had was with our table location as we were seated at the area closest to the city street which lead to a delay in our order being taken but once they remembered that we were there it went smoothly.
Service was terrible they took forever to get a waitress for me. Waiter also informed me that he decided to give me service because no other waiter did
Great place for brunch! We sat outside on the patio and the weather was perfect! The bottomless mimosas were wonderful, as was the service!
Great variety of food in an ideal setting. We sat outdoors in the early evening and listened to a band while eating in downtown Champaign. Champaign has become a destination every weekend during the summer and Big Grove Tavern leads the pack!
The reservation was easy to make. It was a great experience. The staff was great and the food was very good. Loved the glass surrounding.
We had the best time - the server we had was called Trish - she was amazing and could not do enough for us - the food was fantastic, and the booth was super comfortable - we never felt rushed, and would go back in a heartbeat
A gorgeous evening so we sat outside to enjoy our dinner. Waitress was great and so was the food. My only complaint were smokers outside of the eating area that we could still smell.
waitress was okay basically but salmon had to be sent back THREE TIMES to be cooked more well-done as i had requested! quinoa kale salad was super dry and kale was old and limp. vegetables with salmon were overcooked and tasted like they were around for days. pecan pie dessert was served with melted ice cream and had close to no pecans. brûlée was soft and without taste. sorry but it was a very disappointing evening and two of us had birthdays and were looking forward to a nice evening! very unfortunate! we won't be back.
Overall, we had a good experience. We had a reservation, and were seated right away; however, were asked to move to a different table. Normally, this wouldn't be a big deal, but my handicapped father had just gotten seated. To have to move him was ridiculous. We don't even know why we had to move. My only other complaint is that it was not explained to us that there were other options for younger kids. We spent money on a meal that my 5 year old nephew ended up not liking. As we were leaving, we noticed a number of kids with typical children's food (i.e. chicken fingers and fries). It would have been nice to know that was an option so we didn't waste money and food. I don't know that all the food is worth the price, but it's a decent restaurant.
We visited Big Grove Tavern on a warm August night and enjoyed sitting outside. The service, drinks and food was very good. We will visit there again!
If you are looking for an awesome brunch, this place has everything you need. Bottomless mimosas that you don't get shorted on, a really diverse and extensive menu, and awesome staff. I was also a big fan of the music they played, the whole time, and we were there for several hours. Two thumbs way up.
Rib eyes pea Ian was great. My husband and I shared it. However, when I asked about rolls or bread, I was shown a small cup of popcorn. A generational thing? I don’t like popcorn with dinner....
The chocolate cake with mint ice cream is our favorite
Food was great and service was good. It was really busy so we had to wait a while to get drinks refilled but it didn’t bother me personally, because it was so busy.
Service was a little slow. Noise level was ridiculous, you could barely hear the server describe the specials. The music absolutely does not need to be that loud. You couldn't even have a conversation with the people at your table. The food was very fresh and flavorful. Enjoyed the meal, but will think twice about returning due to the noise level and the slow service.
The food is always great! Initially our service was poor, it it ended up being fine.
The first thing we noticed was there was barely anyone there yet we waited forever to even see a waitress. They were then out of a few items, their slushie machine was broken, and the waitress couldn't answer basic questions. The prices are high for subpar service. Dont serve oysters if you dont have things like oyster forks or horseradish. Dont seve $19 chicken and dunking a d then have a waitress with a midriff showing.
Incredible food with beautiful presentation, lots of tasty vegetarian options! Great hummus and I'm picky about it so don't say that often :)
Had a very good meal with a great waitress. My only complaint is that the place is noisy..music was loud. But, everything else was great. Love the popcorn they serve before dinner.
LOVE this restaurant! Drinks are delicious! Entrees are marvelous. It is not a quiet place to dine. This could be improved. Don’t have the fried Brussels sprouts. The recipe needs to be revamped. The mushroom risotto was exceptional.
Food choices were excellent, service was fast and friendly (shout-out to our waiter Ramone) and food was not over priced.
We have had many good experiences here, but Father's Day brunch was not one of them. We waited over an hour before getting our food and wait staff didn't stop by to offer to refill drinks. Steak was exceptionally fatty and served without a knife.
Dined there for Fathers Day brunch. Ordered eggs Benedict and the eggs were too over cooked, even after we requested they be cooked runny. The waiter was very nice and apologetic and later told her manager who brought over new poached eggs. We just think the chef/cooks should know how to poach an egg especially when that is one of their signature dishes. While we will return to the restaurant, as we dine here frequently, don’t think I’ll order eggs Benedict again.
Our server was lovely but it took a long time to get our food.
Big Grove has wonderfully flavorful food. We enjoy the free popcorn snack as you sit down at the table. Cocktails are generally pretty good. My wife and I have enjoyed wine better with meals lately. They have some good choices of wine as well. Would like the music to be a little lower. Do they do that to make it just uncomfortable enough that people want to leave after they are done eating? We really enjoy Big Grove and recommend it as a great place to eat.
Wish we could have sat outside. To bad reservation can’t be made for outside seating. Otherwise a very good experience and always good food.
The ambiance was great, but there was a huge influx of children. The children were running around the restaurant, kids were shouting, parents were walking around and not minding the other guests. Our food came out quickly, but it left much to be desired. We started with the meat and cheese plate, it was delicious but the presentation wasn't all that. I had the sweetpea penne, it was alright; for a pasta dish it lacked salt. I don't know if the chef forgot to add salt to the dish, but it was so bland. My date had the gnocchi, which was better than my pasta but again missing salt. The server asked us how our food was only moments after she delivered it to the table, and then she wasn't back to ask if we needed anything else until she brought the dessert menu. I will not be returning to big grove for dinner, but would love to try happy hour or brunch.
Always a nice experience!
We had the best time after the Illinois half-marathon!! We were so looking forward to our food, that when we hit mile 10 and felt like we couldn’t go on, we were describing our food in such exquisite detail, we were able to finish better than we had anticipated!! Excellent service from our host to our waiter, terrific food and fun ambience! My favorite restaurant in Champaign!!
We had a birthday dinner for my mother-in-law at Big Grove Tavern. It wasn’t busy in the restaurant at that time of night. We were seated right next to hostess desk where a lot of staff just hung out/socialized which was really distracting and our view was mostly their backs. Our waitress was fairly good but when we would need her we often saw her socializing in another corner with other staff. The food was just okay.
