Outstanding... we had the Journey menu and it was amazing: tasty, creative, quality food, surprising presentations. The 13+ small plates were fabulous, of worthy note the sea urchin (melted in our mouth), the Peruvian corn bread (best we ever had, creamy, smooth not over powering), the cesar salad w/a surprise of crunchy fish. I had notified the restaurant that I have an onion allergy, apparently that was not an issue at all, how they managed such testy dinner w/out the onions is a miracle in itself! Truly everything was delicious.
But add to that the desserts more of the same great quality and creativity, particularly the strawberry cheesecake AND since it was my husband's bday the restaurant gave us both all we needed to make a mini-ice cream sundae. Wow! the attention to detail in the presentation of the food!!
And the same attention was given to the restaurant itself, the space is peaceful with ample room to dine and have a conversation unlike most restaurants where they try to fit as many tables as possible.
We appreciated that Chef Chris Bleidorn took the time to visit our table at a peak time in the restaurant. He and his staff are to be congratulated for their delicious and creative work and for their impecable service.
This definitely worth the splurge. A special occasion made memorable.
Yet another beautiful, delicious meal from this remarkable restaurant. Two complex meat dishes anchored the menu: an intricate guinea hen preparation, and grilled duck. New was a spectacular dish of sunchoke stuffed with sunflower seeds, served on a sunflower; this completely changed my view and understanding of what these ingredients could be and what they tasted like to produce a fruity, rich flavor. There was also an amazing "pine cone" broth that was impressive. The way in which the chef combines all parts of the animal (or vegetable) to produce fascinating visual and taste experiences is remarkable.
Omg what can I say, I loved this experience despite their heavy price tag. Every dish was so unique, ingredients I would never put together turned out beautifully and tasteful. Service was also exceptional and unpretentious. They were so accommodating because I’m pregnant and could not eat certain foods.
Overall food was amazing, a delightful culinary journey. The ambiance and services are wonderful, the open kitchen and firepit have a cozy home feel that's genuinely welcoming.

My wife and I dined at birdsong after a show at the Orpheum theatre. We had an absolutely magical dining experience. The service was friendly and impeccable. The food was delicious, creative and inspiring. We loved this place. Thank you so much!
Food: every ingredient is thoughtfully constructed that melds together perfectly.
Staff: well educated on the menu and very attentive to us as dinners. They took care of the little details that we all take for granted
Space: loved the openness and how bright the space was. They kitchen provides the energy and you can hear the kitchen staff all in unison respond to the Chef
Ambience: very romantic, and at the same time you can have a conversation without having to shout. Many restaurants these days don’t pay attention to this
Overall: tremendous experience with phenomenal food ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The service and food was simply outstanding. We are frequent diners at many of the bay area "best" and Birdsong does stand out as unique and special. We enjoyed an old Burgundy, offered at a "reasonable" price. Not a place for those who are finicky about choosing food, a fantastic place for the adventurous.
Exceptionally creative cuisine presented in an intimate setting. We sat at the counter and watched and listened to the staff working together to prepare all stages of the dinner. Each person was extremely engaging and thoughtful as courses were presented. Noise level very pleasant with an eclectic play list in the background. Apparently, the chef chooses the play list, serving pieces, as well as creates the likely choices for dinners. Staff reports that staff meetings are often a chance to taste and comment as choices are made for upcoming dinner journeys. Birdsong is pretty new and just got its first Michelin star. I would not be surprised to see more follow. Very positively compares to restaurants we have visited with more stars.
Surprising, Creative, Inspired American! A truly great restaurant representing the American Melting Pot of the best of world cuisines and the American spirit of Innovation. Impressed by reviews, wife and I were able to obtain a reservation about a month in advance for a Saturday evening. Physically, the open kitchen with a long counter resembles a stage, with a row of minimalist wooden tables across. As we were unable to obtain the coveted counter seats, we were seated at the table promptly. A server appeared and explained the menu consisting of some twenty small dishes (this is a tasting menu place - $207 Fridays & Saturdays, $197 Tues-Thu) and beverages (wine & beer only). Wife ordered a chenin blanc and I ordered the IPA. Then we were served a number of bite-sized small appetizers in rapid succession – each bite was exquisitely presented, and literally burst in flavor in the mouth! Interestingly, the different dishes were served by a number of servers, as if in turn or prepared by the server. The meal consisted of the cluster of appetizers followed by wonderfully flavorful duck, indescribably delicious and rare, followed by equally delicious lamb, which was followed by a number of desserts, and as we were celebrating wife’s birthday, a special complimentary ice cream course with a number of condiments. One outstanding feature of this restaurant is that all of the courses that came after an outstanding course was as delicious and innovative as the previous one! This is unusual because as one becomes satiated in the course of a meal, one usually becomes less appreciative of the next bite. But at Birdsong, even though we were becoming quite satiated, we enjoyed each following dish with gusto! This restaurant is a rare discovery, and it deserves at least another Michelin star to the current one. We will definitely be back with anticipation!
Birdsong has ruined all other food for me. That was the most incredible dining experience I have ever had. I am still daydreaming about every dish served. It amazes me how much flavor and thought was put into each dish. I appreciated the chefs bringing out each dish and giving an intro.
I enjoy culinary arts so much because I believe it arouses all of our senses and Birdsong truly showcases this. Sitting at the chef's table and watching how much passion goes into each dish made the experience that much more special.
You'd surely be missing out if you do not do the wine pairing. I look forward to coming back on my next visit to SF.
Amazing experience and wonderful service
Our meal was incredible, and the service was awesome. Everyone was really welcoming, friendly, and willing to talk about the food to the last detail. We had the “journey” experience, and we left super full.
The food was amazing. There was only one course out of the whole set that was a bit off compared to the rest, but everything was delicious and memorable.
They certainly made the occasion feel special, and the compositions were so unique. “Journey” definitely feels appropriate for this experience. Highly recommended!!!
Truly amazing. The first small bites were out of this world! Where do I get me more of that purple cornbread? Pricey (very), but worth the occasional splurge or special occasion.
20 course meal so be prepared to sit 3 hours to dine.
It was nice. I was thrown off by the cheapest coffee being $12. I preferred Lazy Bear 100%. The food was good, the desserts could use a little more development. Let just say I’m happy I went but I’m not highly motivated to return. Service was friendly and great entertainment to watch the open kitchen.
Yet another wonderful meal from this charming and interesting restaurant. As usual the highlights included the trout in cedar, and a complex guinea hen preparation. More recent was a simple but delicious dish of peas and rice, the peas being extremely delicate yet crisp. Even though I’ve been here several times, the dishes are so intricate and there are refinements continually being made, so I enjoy repeat visits too.
We loved our experience at Birdsong. It's a tasting menu we would like to experience again, in a different season to see what has changed. Really hospitable, welcoming service and fun / not stuffy presentations - although knowledgeable at the same time. Not one staff person hedged or dodged a question about the courses and very much understood what was being presented. Great fun!
it was great!! But it is literally too much food. 3-4 less courses would be fine. the duck, the lamb, the sausage could actually be smaller. But it's all so good.

Phenomenal experience - each of the 13 courses was memorable and the whole dinner was perfectly choreographed by the extensive staff. Seafood and meat dishes were all excellent and I loved the bonus sea urchin that appeared! Well worth the splurge. I will be returning to Birdsong!
We celebrated my wife’s birthday. After being seated we saw the tasting menu with a Happy birthday and her name printed on the top of it. We were seated at the counter facing the kitchen and got to watch the sous chefs artistically preparing each dish. Everything from the food preparation and presentation along with the wine pairing was done at the highest level. Highly recommend.
Another superb meal with several world class dishes. A spectacular dish of trout inside cedar on fir needles, fired and served smoking, was one of best seafood dishes I’ve ever had. A deceptively simple guinea “hen leg” that was actually a much more complex arrangement of hen was wonderful. The duck dish, grilled breast with accompanying cuts from the duck, was even improved from last time I was here, just terrific. A complex carrot dish was also excellent. Desserts were disappointing, with yoghurt and other “healthy” ingredients that tasted like a weight watchers meal. (Most SF restaurants, even Quince, have really let their desserts slip in recent years, sadly).
Overall, a fascinating and remarkable meal. Tasted great and lots of fun to eat. An emphasis on using the whole animal actually improved made me appreciate familiar meats in new ways. Preparations look simple but are very complex, but you can taste all the different subtle variations of flavors. The technical quality of the execution is top notch.
Some of the dishes were on salty side, and too much sauce, the only dish I would like and can remember was the pine needle sorbet, the rest of desserts were very sweet. Service was nice, but definitely overrated
This restaurant was just so good. The "bacon and eggs" (a fried porcetta tube filled with caviar on a dollop of reduced egg yolk) was a party in my mouth. Service was flawless and the space is so sexy. Well-deserved Michelin star, wouldn't surprise me if they can grab a second.
Wonderful experience, albeit pricey. We had a great time as the service and ambience are off the charts, and the food was truly delicious.

Incredible, one of the best meals of my life. As innovative and visually appealing as it was incredibly tasty. I had time constraints and they couldn’t have been cooler about adapting to my schedule. It wound up being a lot of food to consume in an hour and a half, I would recommend doing it at their pace.
My wife and I recently ate at Birdsong to celebrate her birthday. We had heard a lot about the restaurant beforehand, but honestly the experience exceeded our expectations in every way. The restaurant recently received a michelin star but it already felt like a three star experience. The interior is beautiful with every little detail customized and thought out. We sat at the chefs table which was an amazing 20+ foot single cut from a tree. The atmosphere is fun with great music like Prince and Tom Petty. The open kitchen is entertainment on its own witnessing their precise execution of every meal. The service was spot on in every way, professional but also not stuffy. The Chef even serves (and on one occasion cleared!) our table. Hard to believe how down to earth he is. And of course, the food was uniquely delicious in every way. The Chef has really found a way to bring out new combinations and flavors. All their meat is bought whole and aged in their own meat celler in the bottom level and no detail is overlooked. I also had the biggest piece of Uni, and of course most delicious, that I've ever seen! Plus if it's your birthday there is a special, and very unique treat for you at the end! Come hungry!
I thought it would be a one time special occasion, but after going, my wife and I have insisted on making it a regular trip, its just too good!

Delightful and fun meal highlighted by some superb meat, fowl and fish preparations. Trout wrapped in smoking cedar was terrific. Hen leg was beautifully prepared and presented and was excellent. Duck was superb. Lamb was phenomenal, the chef knows how to make lamb better than nearly anyone. A barbecued carrot dish was also delicious. As for the pie - I do miss the days of the intricate French pastries that restaurants used to serve. This was a very fun and interesting place with some great food.
Probably the best restaurant in the Bay Area! This was my third visit and it just gets better each time. I can’t wait to return and try the new dishes. Sit at the counter!

Too bad that front of house seems run by Private Equity firm. Major $$ error on wine, in spite of twice asking during meal if a mistake had been made with wrong bottle. $90 mistake in favor of Birdsong. No attempt to explain or correct. We paid it but shows customers seem second to profits. Too bad.
The food and presentation were divine. I will say, having the 845 time slot was disappointing. It felt rushed, with us getting asked several times it felt a minute to choose our drink order and 30 minutes to an hour in the whole staff cleaning ( wiping down, bringing out containers, winding down) which didn't really warrant the "chef's kitchen " ambiance. I also got charged for an extra glass of wine.

Amazing service, ambiance. Food started okay but ended weak - you can taste and feel the butter and fat they rely on for flavor. Oftentimes, the heaviness of the creams and sauces they use overwhelm the natural flavor of the meats or flavors they are trying to highlight. This was evident in the gourds (too salty), the cream of the tarter sauce (too heavy. The best dish were the lightest dishes (I.e. the black cod because my friend doesn’t eat lamb). The cornbread was fantastic, but with so much butter it probably should have come later. The meal ended with gourds, Apple pie, ice cream, cookies... all of which could be reduced by at least 50% as by that point im sure at least a pound of butter has already been consumed per person. Overall, I wish they used less fat and creams for flavoring and relied more on the natural flavor/broths of the ingredients because the ingredients were undoubtedly very fresh and the meal was not very enjoyable towards the end.
The food was great. They definitely deserve all the praise and the star they received this year. The use of aromatics into the cuisine was very innovative and added to both the ambiance and the food tasting. I think there was a large company part downstairs so the whole staff was pretty busy overall, but I don't feel the service suffered much from it. Highly recommend trying this place out for any foodies out there.
Hands down one of the very best meals of my life. This is the revelatory experience I'm always hoping but rarely achieving to find when trying a new fine dining restaurant. All sixteen dishes were gems and tasted even better than we could have expected. They are polished and refined, but even more delicious than they are beautiful. Strong bold flavors, a commitment to rich and fatty flavors without being overly heavy and providing many really distinctive dishes and tastes. The restaurant was warm and inviting, very well lit (which is great for seeing and taking photos of the dishes) and I really adored our waiter who was great to talk to and provided tons of valuable context. I can't say enough good things about this restaurant and look forward to returning.
