14oz Barnsley Lamb Chop
with vine tomatoes and rosemary butter
with parsnips, kale, hazelnuts and shallot dressing
Outstanding service and tasty food. A real find, close to the British Museum
The scallops appetizer was very good.
The lamb chop was all fat with little meat. When we told them they offered to replace it with the Rump of lamb which was lean and excellent.
The cheesecake and the rice pudding are specialities of the house. They were rich, good and generous portions.
Really pleasant evening. Lovely food and service. My first visit and will definitely be back. Perfect for a quiet dinner / business. Great location and ambience. Highly recommend!
Service was really amazing - just right, not too intrusive but very helpful. Food was of a very decent standard from the set a la carte menu, at a decent price for this part of London on a Saturday lunchtime, just round the corner from the British Museum and RADA both of which we were visiting.
Thank you for a lovely evening.
We have visited a few times for special occasions over the years and it is our 'go to' place in London when we spend time here. They are friendly and helpful. The bar is lovely to sit in before the meal and enjoy the Iive music .
Glamorous place, I didn't realise it was a hotel too. Nice decor, good food but quite small portions and lovely lovely wine.
While Everette was very nice, he was not actually a server as there were no actual servers until about an hour into our meal. When we did finally get servers they were very busy assisting a party of 8 next to us. We were the only two parties in the entire restaurant including ours. The food was horrible. I ordered from the preset menu, the scotch egg tasted like it was egg inside of a bread roll. The duck was so bloody, it left the taste of iron in my mouth. I am pregnant so I was very upset when I took a bite of the duck and realized how under-cooked it was. To be honest, even if I wasn't pregnant, I still would have been disgusted but not as concerned about the risk of eating raw poultry. I have had duck many times at many other high end restaurants. This was just bad cooking. At least if they are going to serve something raw or under-cooked, you should be notified, especially since I had brought it up to Everette and we had a full discussion about me being pregnant. When they brought the recooked duck back, I was so turned off from the first bite, I could not continue to eat. We took the dessert to go hoping maybe that would be better, but it was so bland and lacked flavor. Over 100 pounds later, leaving hungry and disgusted, I would not recommend this place to a starving homeless person if the meal was offered for free.
A fantastic experience for our last night in London. Food was superb, service was friendly and attentive, and the ambience was perfect.
Amazing food and ambience perfect for catching up with friends and having a relaxed dinner.
The staff were so friendly and polite and knowledgeable about the menu and wine.
Perfect evening and so relaxed.
Excellent food and attentive service, with a traditional bistro style setting. Was a very enjoyable dinner.
Amazing service and food. So glad we happened on it. Staff we exceptional
A beautiful restaurant with pedestrian food (if you're a vegetarian). The service was excellent and the staff very friendly. The view onto the garden is lovely! But the food was only OK. I was disappointed having read so many positive reviews. Maybe the meat dishes are better prepared? My salad was overpriced and fairly tasteless. The veggies in my pasta primavera were very fresh, but the preparation of the pasta--the flavoring of the sauce--was absent: it was basically grilled veggies and pasta and olive oil with a little parmesan tossed on top. A family sitting next to me allowed their toddler to play her video out loud at the restaurant, and the staff did not intervene. The family was friendly and the kid very cute--but it could have been a distraction for others, as it was, occasionally, for me.
We had a good meal in comfortable surroundings sitting on the covered terrace. The food was well cooked and presented - not spectacular or particularly exciting or innovative, Which was ideal for the occasion.
I must say that my experience at lunch today was incredibly disappointing. I had been looking for a suitable place to enjoy a quiet lunch with my Grandmother before visiting an exhibition at the British Museum.
Starting on a positive note, the staff were excellent at providing a pre-lunch Gin & Tonic in the hotel before we moved into the dinning room.
Unfortunately after that things started to go down hill. The dinning room was deserted for lunch on a Saturday. As it later became apparent, this was intentional. Two groups of walk-ins were turned away and told that the restaurant was “fully booked” despite it only having only two people in it. This is a restaurant that clearly doesn’t want your business.
On the food quality, I had ordered the fishcake starter which was to be served with a poached egg. The poached egg had been boiled to an inch of its life. The yolk was rock hard and going grey. I am not certain how such an error could occur in a restaurant that only had two diners. Further my Tuna from the Grill menu was barely cooked at all.
Despite these issue the bill also proved challenging. Firstly, I had to remind them that our drinks had not been added to the bill. Secondly, despite the issues they had still had the nerve to add a 12.5% gratuity to the bill. At no point when we were leaving did they attempt to apologise.
For those reading to the end of this review, do not visit this “non-restaurant”, they clearly do not value their customers.
Good meal and good service. We would definitely go again
Whenever we visit London we try to locate restaurants with good food in specific neighborhoods. We were very pleased to find the Blue Door Bistro next to the British Museum. The hotel + restaurant has a garden setting for nice weather and a lovely glass enclosed tea room. We were there for lunch but next time we will try dinner in the dinning room or a light lunch in the tea room. The service and the food were top quality.
Arrived 30 mins before booked time, no problem we were seated in an empty dining room which was very pleasantly decorated. Staff were charming and attentive. Menu gave a choice of a 3 course set price and a more extensive selection available from another menu. For starters I had the black pudding scotch egg and my wife chose the mushroom and truffle soup (served to look like cappuccino) Soup declared good but could not taste the truffle. The Scotch Egg was served cut in half and the edges of the pudding were hard, perhaps it stood under the lights of the pass too long, however it was tasty.
Mains Fish with risotto and belly pork. The fish was cold and was sent back, the pork although not cold was not very hot but i kept it, when returned the fish was only marginally warmer. The pork was over cooked on the base to the extent that it had the constancy (and taste ) of wood. The young man serving us ? Smithman was obviously embarrassed about the meal and was most apologetic. Deserts, large piece of Cheese Cake and a cheese selection. Both very good. Mr Smithman and a senior member of staff took off the price of the main courses and made other adjustments to the bill.
Although the food fell below par, the staff and the general ambiance of the restaurant was a pleasure and I will be prepared to try again.
A rare combination of old-fashioned, white tablecloth, elegant and discreet ambiance and service and well-chosen, well-prepared dishes. We came here once out of convenience and have returned several times with friends. Along with a visit to a theatre, it's one of our favorite ways to splurge when visiting London, and I hope to return again.
Belle découverte que ce restaurant choisi sur Opentable. Accueil très chaleureux, nourriture délicieuse, service agréable. Je recommande chaudement.
Very nice family dinner with a kind and professional service. We ate very well.
Food was fine, staff very nice. The only slight problem was that the clotted cream with dessert was fine but the double cream had gone off. They were very apologetic & deducted it from the bill.
Food was super delicious and service excellent! Recommed their specials.
A slightly old-fashioned (but not in a bad way) and perfectly comfortable restaurant, with tasty food at not outrageous prices.
Nice eating environment. It serves traditional English food, well done. If you are looking for something that is original or inventive, however, this is not the place for you.
Good setting and friendly staff. Food was a bit disappointing for the price and the staff need a bit more training before being let loose on customers.
I was treated quite well as a solo and the food was definitely worth the price. I went for an unrushed lunch after visiting the British Museum. Dinner would be lovely here - it's the same menu. I chose lunch because of theatre tickets most evenings and I want a relaxed meal.
Excellent service, excellent ambience and nicely organised tables. First rate Barnsley Chop beautifully presented with fresh aldente seasonal vegetables. Lovely fresh little sweet buns with original cream fillings and chocolate sauce- very dainty and good value. Only criticism is of course London prices but for the standard of restaurant and the area the overall cost not too bad. We’d go again. Thank goodness for skilled and friendly continental staff, let’s hope we don’t frighten them all away over the next few years. We need them so much!
Incredible meal only outdone by the service!
Excellent food in a quiet atmosphere. This was an great restaurant for meeting up with old friends to have a good meal and catch up.
Deliciosa la comida. Precioso lugar. Muy buen servicio amable, eficiente y rápido. Un lugar con mucha clase. Quedamos fascinados. Definitivamente pensamos regresar y lo recomendaremos a nuestros amigos. Súper cerca del museo británico, excelente ubicación.
Delicious light dinner on the terrace
We wanted an enjoyable Sunday afternoon meal in a cosy setting in Bloomsbury before going on to an evening concert. So this bistro was a great find. The food was beautifully prepared and presented with well-sourced ingredients, flavours and seasoning. We were given 3 different types of salt flakes, though the chicken and Barnsley lamb chop were perfectly seasoned already. There were enough choices on the menu to suit our tastes for starters, mains and desserts and the staff were all very friendly and welcoming. I would happily return.
Very quiet for a Saturday lunch and we were the only ones in our dining room for most of the meal.
Server seemed inexperienced and struggled to open a bottle of wine, but she was friendly.
Black pudding scotch egg starter was tasty, but very rich and needed more aoli or salad.
Mains of trout and prawn stroganoff were nice enough but a little uninspiring.
South African Chardonnay was perfect for the range of food and not too expensive considering where we were.
Not somewhere we’ll go out of the way to go back to, but not bad overall and a perfect location when visiting the British Museum.
We had a delicious dinner at Blue Door, after cocktails on the terrace - don't miss the hotel bar and their signature pawprint cocktail. Ask for the restaurant's TDH (table d'hôte) menu - 2 courses £24. Interesting wine list with lots of choice by the glass. Lovely staff.
Had short time pre theatre and was great food executed brilliantly
We had a fantastic meal. Enjoyed the jazz in the bar before our meal. Really friendly staff without being over bearing. Wonderful night out
I booked a business lunch for 2 at the Blue Door Bistro and we had a very good experience. Service was extremely good, the food was fine (both selection and quality) and the décor is nice, cosy and traditional. It was surprisingly quiet for a Friday lunch time, but I assume that's unusual. I would definitely return if I needed lunch in Bloomsbury and it is also very convenient to the British Museum, so could be combined with a visit there.
Blue Door Bistro, being part of the Montague hotel, reflects it British character, impeccable service and good British fare. Good for a birthday, date or special occasions.
This is our second visit and find it perfect after a visit to The British Museum.
The menu while traditional also had interesting variations on a theme such as the duck shepherds pie. Love the choice of salt with butter.
