Beneath the pulsing city lies a hidden dining destination. USDA Prime steaks from the finest Black Angus cattle. Bespoke cocktails. A restored Bank Vault from the 1930s. This is Butcher & Banker, a new "steakeasy" at the crossroads of Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, Javits Center and Hudson Yards.

Butcher & Banker is no ordinary steakhouse. A dozen different steaks are on offer, but non-steak eaters will dine exceedingly well here.

Butcher & Banker pays homage to the New Yorker Hotel’s storied history. The New Yorker opened in 1930 at the height of the Great Depression as the then largest hotel in the city. It has attracted a who’s who of entertainers and dignitaries from around the world, including Muhammad Ali, JFK, Joan Crawford and Nikola Tesla.

Beneath the hotel, a bank vault and offices were occupied by the Manufacturers Trust Company until 1980. With the opening of Butcher & Banker, the public can see the vault for the first time in 37 years.

    Fantastic experience and first time to Butcher and Banker. Overall evening was fantastic and food and service was great! Tournedos with foie gras was incredible and cooked perfectly. Wife had the cowboy ribeye and again cooked perfect with great taste with sufficient sides. Server was attentive without being overbearing. Great evening and a must if near MSG!

    Going to Knicks game tonight and decided to give this steak house a try. I will say for positives the ambience of it being an old bank cellar gave it an old school feel and uniqueness that you feel you are in an underground restaurant. Appetizers and drinks were def great. Recommend the calamari and onion rings. The manager David was very accommodating knowing that the tomahawk was overcooked even though we ordered medium doneness. He gave us a free round of drinks and comped the dessert . Definitely would try again being that the service was great

    Nice, quiet Thanksgiving dinner. Food was fantastic and the wait staff wasn’t rushing us out. Hidden little gem in the chaos of midtown. It’s a great place for a special ocassion.

    We had the pork and Poke Bowl. Both delicious, nice stuff, good atmosphere. A clear like! They serve a warm bread as a starter-yummy!

    We had a wonderful experience eating at this restaurant! We were celebrating my son's 30th birthday and wanted a nice festive dinner prior to seeing Billy Joel at MSG. I was happy to be able to get a reservation at this steakhouse, which I hadn't heard of before, but the reviews which I read online were very good. We enjoyed our meals thoroughly, the service was wonderful and I would overall recommend this restaurant to others. It was very close to MSG and, although a bit above what I usually spend on dinner, well worth it for a special occasion!

    Nothing to write home about. The staff was nice enough but just felt the food was mediocre ; my second time trying this place in a long time and definately my last. To many places to get a good steak dinner in this town to settle for mediocre.

    I came here for our anniversary and regret it. Everything from the ambience to the food is only what I can describe as MID. If you come here for the bank vault, sorry to break it to you but you'll most likely be disappointed as its like 1/4 of the restaurant. I got the lobster bisque with a hair in it, the waiter apologized deeply for it but before that incident he was quite assertive and cold. For the restaurant knowing it was our anniversary, they gave us one of the worst seats in the restaurant, even though half the restaurant was empty. Free bread, very mid. We ordered a burger, the cheese wasn't fully melted and the patty was large but not in a good way. Got a Wellington, it was extremely greasy and could tell it was rushed. Compared to all the magnificent food you could eat in NYC (I live in Manhattan so I know my food) this was not worthy of 4 stars. IDK, I wouldn't have complained much if the food was excellent, but it wasn't.

    Another outstanding dining experience at the B & B. From beginning to end it was what you would expect when you come to this unique and awesome dining spot. The service is top notch along with the food, which is always creative, delicious and perfectly prepared. We look forward to our next dining adventure.

    A unique setting, a former bank vault, combined with excellent food and proficient and professional service make for a great experience. It’s proximity to MSG, basically across the street, is also a plus.

    We found the service to be bordering on brusk, but prompt. The food was over seasoned in general. The fries were the best part of the meal, the shrimp tasted of chemicals. After the waiter observed that no one ate their shrimp cocktail, they asked if we wanted to finish. We said they tasted “off” to us. We were still charged for them. The salmon was cooked nicely but very greasy. The steak was well cooked, but salty.

    Entry into the restaurant is actually in the entrance to the Tick Tock Diner, which was not clear so we had to ask. We dined in the vault, which was interesting, but the wall on the opposite side was a loud floral pattern that did not fit with the decor of the space. I’m certain it was in place to absorb sound, but the fabric choice was bizarre. The main courses were mediocre, at best, but the burrata appy and crème brûlée and cheesecake for dessert were quite good. I would not return.

    The ambiance was there for sure. It gave very upscale vibes without being overly snooty. Definitely on the pricier side but not too bad for the overall experience. One of the waiters suggested drinks and apps for us which was very nice, however our other waiter seemed more interested in getting us out of there rather then giving us a 5 star experience which both my partner and I felt from his lack of enthusiasm & overall disinterest in us/serving us. The only other negative thing I can say is I booked our reservation online and noted it was my partners birthday & reiterated this twice to the hostess who called and confirmed the reservation & when I called back to adjust the reservation & was told there would be a house dessert included with our meals. Well the waiter was unaware it was a birthday and when we ordered dessert brought it straight out to the table no candle or specialty anything- I also paid for this dessert as I ordered it off the menu rather than receiving the house complimentary celebratory dessert.

    Speaking for the 3 of us that had dinner. Everything was very good 2 out of the 3 meals were cooked perfectly as we all ordered our meat medium but one was undercooked. Service was subpar for a restaurant trying to be on the high end. Would go back if needed somewhere to go if we had a msg event.

    We were looking for a nice restaurant MSG and our hotel. This fit the bill. Loved the old bank decor. We sat right in the old bank vault. Food was lovely. Great presentation on it all. From appetizers, to sides, to mains, to dessert - we loved it all.

    Nice ambience, with cool banker vibes. Waiter seemed overall uninterested in our table. Apps included burrata, shrimp cocktail, and lobster bisque. The bisque was the highlight of the meal and I 10/10 recommend. The shrimp was very large but bland. The burrata was just okay. My wife got the pasta a La vodka which was a good size portion but lacked the typical vodka flavor - still overall good, with lots of great seafood. I ordered the cowboy bone in rib-eye rare and it came medium to medium well, it was otherwise seasoned very well but was a shame they over cooked it. The roasted mushrooms were delicious. Overall, not a great experience especially for the cost.

    Excellent dinner and service. Made a 5:30 reservation (MSG concert @8) and we were seated right on time in the vault. Very unique atmosphere and we all enjoyed the appetizers (sharable along with sides) and drinks were great as well.

    Dined alone - overall good experience. Chilean sea bass with garlic aoli was well prepared as were the roasted carrots I asked for instead of spinach. Best of all was coffee and ice creams - small scoops of pistachio, chocolate and vanilla - so delicious. Plus they made me a coffee to go to take back to my hotel room. I will return when staying at the New Yorker Hotel ( a fine hotel!) when I return to New York next year. Thanks!!!

    As a former New Yorker I was excited to try this unique dining location. The vault is super cool and the menu was interesting - I was excited! But the other ambiance did not match. There's a TV playing sports - and terrible 80's music playing. Just wasn't the vibe I was going for when choosing a steakhouse. The food and service was good, but the TV and clearly someone's play list in the background was distracting and tacky for what is supposed to be a unique and classy spot.
