I had added a note to our reservation that it was my boyfriends birthday. When we arrived it was jammed and were told they were running late and we should wait at the bar, which was also jammed. It took over 10 minutes at the bar to even get the bartender to make eye contact. When they texted me our table was ready it wasn’t a table it was the Ceviché bar. We asked if we could wait for a table but the host said, “there’s already a lot of people waiting for those other tables” so he really wasn’t giving us an option. So we sat at the bar, which really seems like it should be for walk ins, not reservations. As a side note, those bar stools are horribly uncomfortable. The waiter was very nice and did a great job. The food was great. No one even said happy birthday to us or acknowledged the message. I know this is “the hot new rooftop place” but as a boka restaurant I was disappointed in the experience. It seemed like they over booked themselves.
Loved, loved, loved the food. The only thing that was a detriment was the noise level. Totally unable to carry on a conversation. We asked to be moved to the patio, which was slightly better, but then it began to rain, so we had to then wait 20 min for a table to open up again as the place was jammed on a Wednesday night. Service was also a little slow. Took us 45 min to get our cocktails. I would try it again as the food was so good.
Absolutely amazing meal. There is not one thing I could complain about I enjoyed every bite!
Save yourself. Poor service. Miniature food for large prices in a pretentious environment.
The vibe is more for gathering with friends, not so much an intimate dinner or lunch. It's very casual, the food was okay. Nothing stood out like at other Izzard spots. Had the classic ceviche which was tasty, the shishitos were too soft for all the sauce (I prefer they be crunchy for the amount of dressing they carried), and the fish sandwich was good but could've been paired with some greens or something else. Overall, I felt like the food was missing a touch of something, I wish I could pinpoint it more. Also the space is very "instagrammable" if that's your thing, but there's some missing details. For example, the tables for 2 are located in the center of the restaurant - there's nothing for parties of 2 near the windows. So, you feel like you're exposed and in a not-so-special spot.
I really wanted to like Cabra, but it was expensive and the food was mediocre at best. I did appreciate the views and our waitress was lovely, but it certainly wasn't worth the price tag.
Definitely recommend. The views are spectacular. The food is delicious. Reasonably priced all things considered. Best meal in Chicago? No. Would I come back? Yes! Would I rather go house the green beans over at GntG? Also yes. But they were crack. Stephanie Izard will not disappoint you. If you can find a reservation, book it.
My wife is in love with everything Stephanie Izard. Sitting outside at Cabra did not disappoint. Food was delicious. Food seemed to come out too fast so that we had more on our table than we could handle at one time. However, it was delicious. Our server seemed swamped trying to handle most of the tables outside. It became very crowded towards the end of the evening even for a Tuesday night.
Food and view were great. Service and timing was just ok.
While Cabra was good, I am happy I went as a work expense because it was costly for the quantity of food you get. I am familiar with tapas style but these portions were very small for the price tag. Stephanie Izard is an amazing chef and I love her other three restaurants but would rank this one on the lower end for value to cost.
If you do go, I would recommend the shrimp ceviche (could use some bread to dip into the juice), goat empanadas, chicken thigh skewers and the chicharron plato (larger dish, very good)!
Cabra to me is more of a place you go for a drink, app and the ambiance not a full meal.
We celebrated our engagement anniversary here and couldn't be happier! The food and drinks were unreal. But our server was the star of the show! Hopefully whoever reads this can find out who it was and give that man a raise! Seriously though he was above and beyond. He was very attentive, our water and cocktails never went empty and he even sent out champagne and dessert on the house for us! We loved to see how much the staff worked together to make our experience 100%
Can't wait to come back!
Laid back environment, great food and great service
Great place, nice staff , but the food very poor , it's not a Peruvian cousin, not even close neither gourmet
good food, slow service, received the drink at the end of the meal after asking about the order
Best brunch I've had in Chicago, highly recommend the salmon dip and the omlette!!!
The restaurant itself is gorgeous. The views from the roof of the Hoxton are magnificent. It was a little crowded when we were there, but I chalk that up to the popularity. Once we tasted the food, I realized why it was so popular. The Pork entree was out of this world delicious. We also tried the Goat empanada, tuna and quinoa dish, the skirt steak entree, and the chicken thighs and breast skewers and none of them disappointed. I will definitely be back and I can't wait to send my friends over! Alyssa, our server, was very attentive, answered all of our questions about the menu very well, and even guided our choices masterfully considering 2 at the table were Keto. Thanks Alyssa!
The place was beautiful. The food was good but the serving are sooo small for the price. I left hungry.
Only critique is they didn’t tell us when we called that they wouldn’t have a full menu at the time of our reservation. We came in starving and had only a couple small plate options to choose from.
As long as you’re aware of this when you reserve, no problem. It’s just not a great surprise.
Otherwise, I overall recommend Cabra!
Our first time at Cabra was mid-day and the food was great, noise level very high, service good by our waitress but food and drinks were slow to come out from the bar and kitchen. We will return perhaps at more of a off time or at dinner
Interesting space. Good for drinks and snacks or light dinner
Really good food, service and great interior design and views. Dessert was great too
Beautiful venue (although note quite hot in the unavoidable sunlight outside). Delicious food and cocktails.
Far too loud, and we are not the type to complain about noise. Service seemed to be focused more on getting us out the door than having us enjoy our meal -- server barely said hello, was impatient to get a drink order placed, all the dishes arrived within 15 minutes of one another (we ordered 8 plates), and food was attempted to be taken away almost as quickly as it came. The restaurant is gorgeous and the views are wonderful, but that did not make up for the small portions, high prices, and less-than-stellar atmosphere. Unfortunate, as Boka and Stephanie Izard typically make for a dynamic duo.
Excellent dishes, great service, outstanding atmosphere. Made the reservation early because they were filling fast, and was pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t over crowded. Can’t wait to return!
Had an excellent lunch at the bar. Staff was friendly from the movement we walked-in, bartenders were so knowledgeable and friendly we opted for having lunch with them and gave our table away. Cannot wait to come visit these folks again.
we ate later so it wasn’t as loud as people say. food was amazing—get the beef heart and try multiple ceviches!
Thank you for a lovely evening.
Amazing food and service. Beautiful view and people. The noise was too much, but expected in a place like this.
We had lofty expectations due to location, executive chef, and previous reviews. Unfortunately between the noise level [very loud and echoey with minimal sound dampening] and somewhat uninspiring food we can't recommend Cabra to anyone.
Great evening with unique offerings!
5 stars for the food and ambiance! Beautiful space and delicious food! The service could have been better but we will definitely be back! It’s a beautiful setting and decorated so nice!
Fantastic food but the noise level was ridiculous. Terrible acoustics, and the room was only about 2/3 full. Despite how great the food was, not sure I will go back.
Fantastic food and service, beautiful setting
Honestly,... this place has such great potential to be better. It seems to be a place to be seen rather than to experience the food.
Stephanie Izard hits it out of the park again. Her flavor combinations and depth are remarkable.
Food was very subpar for the price and the hype.
I normally really like Stepanie Izard's restaurants. This one falls way short. It's very, very scene-y. We were first seated outside and were vying for space with the hords of people trying to get in to the bar by the pool. Then asked to be moved inside where it was incredibly loud. Had trouble hearing our server as well as each other. So we were off to a pretty poor start. The drinks were fine - normal downtown pricey, and possibly a little weak (fine by me). Nothing really noteworthy. The food also wasn't very noteworthy. Nothing stood out or was all that interesting. In the end, it was a very overpriced meh meal in a location that definitely wasn't my scene. I won't be back and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Great food, beautiful space, but very noisy.
My new favorite restaurant in Chicago! Wonderful patio with gorgeous views. Staff is friendly and knows the menu well in order to help you make decisons on what to order since there are a lot of unfamiliar dishes. Cocktails are good and if you want more wine choices, the staff will bring you the bottle list from the restaurant on the first floor of The Hoxton. Snapper ceviche, cold sliced octopus, salmon dip, and chorizo kebabs were all excellent!
They only have plastic cups!! Ruins a drink and ruins wine!! Definitely loses stars for that
They were definitely understaffed because service was super slow. The food was amazing, but we found a hair in the salmon dip (which they then replaced).
