New Year's Eve Special Menus & Offers
the end of 2020!!!!!!!!!.......................... Limited seating we will have food and drink specials!!
Life is a little different. QR codes and no servers. But the food was still amazing and and the drinks were perfect. Staff is professional and friendly.
Food has definitely changed. It was good but not as great as it used to be. Some of it was under seasoned and portion was small. Not sure I will go again. Do miss the old menu items.
Wonderful dining experience. Good food and drinks and service is good because you order on line yourself and pay from the table and they bring the food to you. Easy way for diners and also wait staff to earn their tip with little effort...although I am not complaining on paying 20% suggested even though all they do is bring the food to your table. Food and drinks and experience are good. Will definitely go back.
Got the pitcher of margaritas which was very good as were the assortment of enchiladas, chicken mole and tacos that we got among us. Tortilla chips brought with guacamole were thick and tasty. Tuna tostada appetizer was excellent.
Cocktails were great! Food was ok, some hit and miss items. Skip the tuna tostadas (they needed some citrus and flavor)!
The food, ambiance, drinks and staff were great! The only issue was the online ordering app through Square as there were many glitches and I had to keep opening a new tab every time we added a new drink or food item. I have four receipts I have to process for a work dinner of four people.
Date night with my husband
The restaurant concept is interesting; the drinks are terrific, but the food is not remarkable. I’m Mexican, and my food expectations are very high; this restaurant missed the mark.
the food was great but the service was pretty bad. It felt like I'd ordered grubhub or uber eats or something, but they were letting me use their dining room.
We had dinner for seven as part of a job interview process with a potential employee from out of state. Your food may have been the thing that closed the deal.
The food was good but not great. Ambiance is very good
Food was delicious! We order through the QR card and it cam almost immediately. The noise level inside the restaurant was pretty loud, but still fun and lively. We had a great time!
Started with Clase Azul, then the Ensalada de La Casa which was fresh, spicy and crispy. Also ordered the Queso Quesadilla with Mushrooms and Shrimp which was OUTSTANDING. Will have to try this combination again.
During this time - the service was AMAZING and attentive. Food was fabulous!
The margaritas were real good ! Must order a pitcher !!!!
We had the salad which was nice and spicy , and the fish tacos to share where a must order ! As well as the octopus starter which was chaired perfectly which is a must order and we shared The pork dish which comes with the home made tortillas !
I really like this restaurant. Food and ambiance are good. My only complaint is that you order everything thru your phone and have to pay each time your order something. They add a 20% service charge to each order. I think that is steep considering there are no waiters, just food runners.
We always enjoy eating at Calavera. Their upscale Mexican food is always good and their service is good also. We like their outdoor seating which works well for us. Will visit again soon.
Great food, amazing service!
After receiving really bad customer service, we didn’t bother to stay there. So we were in and out in a couple of mins.
We made a reservation for outdoor dining and made sure by calling them ahead of time that they allowed pets. We had just completed 4 hr hike and were starving and wanted a relatively colder place while we ate. We were greeted and walked us to a spot outdoor that was partly in shade so we said we would prefer a spot that was cooler and fully shaded. The hostess was like we don’t give other spots coz we had a big dog. This was when there were absolutely no one in the outdoor dining area and they had about 15 tables outside. So we pointed another table on the other side and asked if we could have it and the hostess said sure and walked us to a completely different table which was even worse than the first one. When we said that was not one we wanted but a different one, again the hostess was like sorry we can’t have you that table. My wife and I had enough of this BS and just walked out. We are so glad we did coz we found another spot next door and they were super nice and accommodating us. Truth be told we ended up having a partly shaded area and that was coz they were only doing outdoor dining and they gave us the best spot that was available ( it was fully crowded with a lots of other pets). I would never visit this mexican place coz they had someone who is clueless about customer service and empathy
Had reservations- arrived and hostess said before anything- it’s gonna be an hour wait. I said I have reservations, she said oh, well we just had a really big party so I don’t know. Can you wait?
So I waited. She comes back and says they had a large party and everyone is so busy- we can’t have the patio which we had reserved. So, we said we’d take any seat available. Sat us in a decent enough spot, told us to use QR code to order. Get ready to do that and look through the menu, server comes up and asks if we’re expecting service. I said…yes? At this point the experience was so bad and I felt so unwelcome I wasn’t sure what to say. Still, we proceed to order drinks. My fiancé asks about the tequila to which she is told- I don’t know, you have to ask a bartender…isn’t this a tequila bar? Ok….fiancé and I order, before drinks arrive we decide we aren’t going to stay. Who knows how long or how bad the service would get. Got chips and salsa which was actually delicious- I ordered a Diet Coke and server brought me a can of Diet Coke. Weird. Sucks because it smelled amazing and I wanted to eat but we felt unwelcome and like a bother.
I like their new Covid ordering / payment system. Tee staff is very attentive and the orders come out quickly
We celebrated my son’s 18th birthday. The service was great. Everyone was very attentive and extremely accommodating and personable.
Not worth it unless you're drinking. Seems like it would be a fun place for happy hour, though.
As always, Calavera delivers fresh, imaginative, Oaxacan-influenced Mexican food in a spacious, airy environment. The outdoor patio is perfect for those not yet ready to eat indoors. Don’t miss the cocktails. My faves are the spicy citrus margarita and the salt air. Yummy!!!
It was great overall and would go back! They even called us to tell us we left a coat. Such great service!
Great food, yummy cocktails and excellent service. What more can you ask for?! It's very clean and they are abiding by covid procedures. We dined outside and it wasn't noisy at all. Had a great time, can't wait to come back!
Outside deck was perfect spot for a meeting.
Excellent food, extremely fast service!!! The only thing is that the phone ordering system tries to trick you into tipping 20% before you even get your food, and without actual service staff (besides runners).
I did not like the experience of the restaurant in general. Having to order my food and pay as I go brought the dinning experience from restaurant to cafeteria. I did not feel served by the waiters, as they were just there to answer any menu questions, bring out plates and removes plates. They were essentially bus boys.
At one point, I ordered a drink and didn’t receive confirmation. The drink was canceled by the restaurant and I had to check through my bank to make sure it hadn’t been charged. It was a bad restaurant experience due to this new cafeteria way of ordering food online, and paying as one goes.
Now, what little human interaction we did have was pleasant. The staff was warm and fun to interact with. Sad that it wasn’t a regular serving experience.
Having a server means I get to interact with one restaurant representative throughout the experience and they make sure everything is going as it should. Not with this experience. I had to look out for my self. I did not feel serviced by experience due to how it’s set up.
The food quality was fair to good.
The drinks and bar tender were fantastic. The dessert was good too. It was my birthday dinner and I was hoping for a better experience that what we paid for.
Unfortunately we won’t be returning and the cafeteria experience is the reason I’ll be sharing to discourage others from experiencing.
This was my first time trying Calavera. My daughter and I went for a late lunch on a Sunday afternoon. It took a while for us to be greeted when we arrived, although our hostess was very friendly after she seated us. You order and pay for your meal through an app. If you want additional items after your initial order you must pay again through the app. This made the wait time longer, and we had to check to see if our order went through. I didn't mind the wait time because we were enjoying our lunch, but if we were in a hurry I would not eat here.
We had to ask for refills on our drinks, even though our server walked by our table several times.
The food is outstanding. I especially enjoyed the tacos.
There are so many wonderful food choices in the Bay Area. I would not choose Calavera again; however, I am glad we came.
That was one of the worst dining experiences I’ve ever encountered. The hostess was oblivious, the food was so bland, we ended up just leaving after we finished our drinks, it was a very disappointing experience. We understand everything is a shitshow “post-Covid” but this was bananas. They’re clearly so understaffed and the new line cooks do not know what’s up.
I ordered the Mexican salad and the Grilled Octopus, 2 appetizers. They were both main dish size. Since I rarely have the chance to eat octopus, I focused on that and brought the salad home. The Mole Amarillo that accompanied the octopus was unusual, complex, spicy and completely delicious. After trying it, I ordered a side of corn tortillas and was really happy with that addition. The description of this dish on the menu does not describe how wonderful this dish is. Although it is not a suggested addition for the dish, ask for corn tortillas. My companion ordered the enchiladas de mole con pollo and loved them.
We also had the passion-ginger limeade that was wonderful. Service was attentive without being intrusive - just right.
Had the Guacamole Verde and the Camarones Tacos with lots of water and Clase Azul. Everything was great, including Pablo and sara
If you prefer dining with full sun in your eyes, a meal that they bring out the appetizer with the entrees and no servers, this is the place for you!
The food is good but management needs to rethink the process of ordering.
One glich is that if you oder everything at once , it all comes out together
Everyone is so friendly and love that fur babies are allowed on the patio. Good and drinks are yummy!
The waitstaff were helpful, we were seated on the patio as we requested, and the food was flavorful and creative. I’ve eaten at Calavera twice before and If anything, it has improved.
The Carnitas tacos were disappointing. The meat was overcooked and dry and actually hard on some of the pieces and the tortilla was soggy and wet. Our appetizer came after our main course for lunch. We were also be disappointed this time
We ordered mole enchiladas, enchiladas suizas, shrimp tacos , tinga tacos all delicious!
Except for the chips , guacamole and salsa. Guacamole was not fresh . Don’t order the chips!! They were stale and hard , I chipped a tooth !
I visited Calavera to host a 9 person business dinner. The staff was incredibly accommodating for our large party. The food and cocktails were outstanding. I love the giant spirits wall and altar inside the restaurant. My client's visiting Oakland from Minneapolis were wowed by the flavors.
