This was my first recent visit to the restaurant in a long time, having visited it once many years back when it had just opened. It was a great experience overall. We were greeted at the door by the host who walked us through some quarantine safety measures and then promptly led us to our table, which was by the window. The tables by the tall and narrow windows give you a nice view of the street. One can tell that both natural and artificial lighting play a part in illuminating the seating area. The courteous host checked up on us periodically to see if we had decided on our order. Like many restaurants during this time, Chennai Chimney uses a QR code through which their menu can be accessed. The menu was very varied, from their appetizers and small bites to the entrees and desserts. We decided on Indian staples, the Chicken and Lamb biriyanis. The food was great. The meats were well-cooked and were delicious. By virtue of the quarantine, the restaurant had limited seating, which was nice. The place didn't feel very crowded and the noise level was quite low. The overall ambience was great. I would definitely visit this place again.
the experience was very good and pleasant, unfortunately in the middle of dinner a large group of diners arrived and the noise and atmosphere became unbearable
We had made reservations a head of time but when we got there the restaurant said they would not be taking any reservations that were made after a certain time. They asked us to wait, were super rude to some other customers and we decided to leave. Not giving my business to rude people.
Drove from Doylestown,PA for dinner and then concert in Princeton. Will definitely eat here again. Taste buds so excited
Slow initial service but food was great
We had a good experience at the restaurant. The staff was attentive and respectful. We had a late reservation on a Saturday and although I understand the staff wants to leave on time after a long day, I did feel a bit rushed towards the end of the service. The food was okay (I ordered butter chicken and malai kofta) although I felt the portion sizes were small for the price. I enjoyed the paneer baajis a lot. They were really delicious. It’s BYOB so that’s a great bonus and parking was easy. I would definitely dine here again but make sure that I have an earlier reservation and perhaps order more of the appetizers.
The Vegetable Byriani was fantastic, as was the gobi manchurian.
Restaurant smells great, the food was delicious, service was on top of their game. Overall great experience and I look forward to going back.
Delicious food! Wonderful service. Only problem is that there were too many delicious options to choose from! Veggie friendly too.
Average Indian food.
We kept trying to find a way to be happy with our experience. The wait time to place an order and the wait time to be served was very long despite asking about timing multiple times. The restaurant was just not that full.
Additionally my dish was hard to eat as there was bone/gristle in it. Looks like there could’ve been better care taken in preparing the meal.
Overall a pretty disappointing experience which I’m onhappy to report as we really kept trying to find ways to be happy with our visit.
Really do miss Masala Grille.
I have never left a negative report for a restaurant before as I feel like there can always be factors that influence that one visit that might not occur on the next visit. But this is my second visit here and the second visit was worse than the first.
I’m hoping my feedback will let the restaurant make some improvements.
Food was delicious. They seemed pretty understaffed though.
The food and service was disappointing. They did not have our registration and the time we waited on receiving our food was unacceptable.
This place used to be great. Not sure what happened but never going back.
This was an excellent dinner; although I wasn't impressed by the weekday buffet, dinner courses are really well created.
perfect. the best place i n princeton to have a great dinner
Elegant dining, gourmet food, and excellent service. What more could one want!
The lunch buffet was recommended to me. The food was very ordinary compared to some wonderful dinner entrees that I've enjoyed, here. The eleven dollar price was fair for what was offered.
The price in Princeton is reasonable, we had a party of 18 ppl with the bill less than 350 dollars. The food is good and the recommendations from the waiter is good for our party with a mix of Indiana and non Indians. The giant 75mm dosa was the highlight for my husband who miss dosa so much! For non Indians who want to have a decent place to taste the Indian food, it is a good place.
Very nice as always but only buffet available at noon.
Good dependable Indian food in Princeton area.
Also has some regional Indian dishes not readily available on other menus.
I was not able to eat here because they only offered buffet. They should have been upfront with that information. I never would have made the reservation otherwise. Also, the tables are too close together. Buffet looked good, just not food I could eat.
The food was wonderful but service was slow and the noise level from distant patrons who were almost shouting was very bothersome.
Fantastic. Loved the people and the food... I am learning Tamil so it was nice to try a few words with the staff... they were v kind and the food was fantastic. The venue was excellent... so charming and tucked away down a side street where I never expected to find a restaurant like this. Thanks for the experience... I permanently programmed Chennai Chimney into my GPS.
We went to buffet on Friday afternoon.
Food was great, Service is really bad though.
We waited for more than ten minutes along with other people to get “plates” to get food.
Not sure if this is a everyday occurrence.
We love Chennai the food is always tasty. Today the food was tasty but not very temperature hot.
The restaurant was freezing too, with the outside doors to the back of the kitchen being opened every 2 seconds, sending a gale through the restaurant.
Not our best experience there today.
Lacked authenticity of taste that one would associate with chennai
The food is good, but the management of the restaurant is terrible. People are waiting for 30 min to be seated while half of the restaurant is empty. We had reservations and got seated, but still it took one hour for us to get our food. We will not be coming back there.
I ordered a lamb dish, it was tasty but I would have liked the lamb to be more tender. The atmosphere is very nice and service was excellent.
I've been here once before and the food was delicious. However we were seated right next to the bathroom which ruined the ambiance. This time I didn't even sit down. I wanted to take my cousin out for lunch while she was home from college. We showed up after making a reservation and no one acknowledged our presence for about 10 mins. I had a two managers and a waitress walk by us numerous times. There were only two families in the restaurant so it wasn't even because it was busy. Finally a waiter talked to me then walked away again. After the third time we were passed I told my cousin we were leaving. There are plenty of great places to eat in Princeton. What a shame.
The food here is always amazing and very inexpensive for the level of service and quality of cuisine provided. Decor and ambiance are warm and inviting, and it's BYOB so you can bring a bottle of wine and settle in. Vegan and vegetarian options are offered alongside traditional meat dishes, so anyone is sure to find an appealing option. I recommend Chennai Chimney without reservation.
We really enjoyed this restaurant. The atmosphere was nice and the food delicious. The wait staff was friendly but service very slow, especially since the restaurant was fairly empty. It’s a BYOB which is definitely a plus. We will be back for sure!
Nice addition to the Princeton dining scene. Occupies the old Masala Grill space but is an improvement on all counts. Better food, service, choices and decor. The variety of the menu can be overwhelming to the uninitiated. Several visits, focusing on Deccan, Tandoori and the rest of the culinary types should be made to fully assess the choices and find favorites. Well priced and since they do not yet have a liquor license, bringing own libations can further reduce the cost. Highly recommended. The manager was gracious even though we missed our reservation time by 40 minutes on a very busy Friday night.
Delicious good. Substantial servings. Good service. We had a theater curtain and finished in plenty of time. The dosa was great and quite a presentation. A bargain. It’s BYOB, something we didn’t know in advance.
My second visit to the restaurant was as good as the first. The food was very good as was the service.
The service was slow and a couple of items served really late but they made up for the mistakes.
Food was fantastic. Server could have been a little friendly although he did go out of his way when we had a problem with the cork on our wine bottle. He needs to smile and not look so somber!
Food was very delicious and staff was very friendly, street samosa and chicken 65 are my favorite dishes here! I would definitely go back there for the delicious indian food.
My wife and I arrived on time for our reservation, but the restaurant had no record of a reservation through Open Table. We showed the host our confirmation email, but we were instructed to wait on a line to be seated. Wait time was estimated to be 30-45 minutes, but seemed longer. We decided to leave and go somewhere else after we heard other patrons complain that they'd been seated for a while and not yet seen menus. There were a few large events in the area that night, and perhaps the restaurant was overwhelmed. That's understandable. Not having the reservation, less so. The place seemed to have a nice atmosphere. Sorry we didn't get to try the food.
I haven't been here since they first opened; I think the food is much better, now. I thought the size of the portions small, or so I thought by looking at the pictures on the online menu. That is not the case and the entre I had, with roti, raita with cucumbers, and a portion of raita served with my meal more than enough for a filling dinner. Sometimes I feel like a meatless meal, and there are some interesting things on the menu that I'll try in the future.
