Went for brunch. We waited 30 minutes before our waiter came to take our order. Food took another 25 minutes to arrive. Very disappointing
Finally visited the "new" Chop Bar with my wife during the NFC Championship. We took advantage of the last day of Oakland Restaurant Week and ordered all the items on the three (3) course prix fixe menu.
Started our meal with the 2016, Urban Legend, Barbera, Sierra Foothills
First Courses: The Arugula Salad candied walnuts, Point Reyes blue cheese, pears was exceptionally fresh and the flavors popped. The Butternut Squash Soup was perfect and possessed a smoothness to complement a cold evening.
Second Courses: The Meatloaf garlic mashed potatoes with sauteed baby carrots was sublime...comfort food at its best. The roast beef and polenta with roasted brussel sprouts was cooked to perfection and pairs so nicely with the wine. Both entrees were spot-on and delicious.
Dessert: The Banana Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding with whipped cream and the Pear/apple fruit crisp with vanilla ice cream...all a matter of personal taste, but both ended the meal with just a hint of sweetness along with a piping hot cup of coffee.
Combined with the unrushed, yet attentive service...a perfect meal enjoyed while the throngs of humanity were watching the big game. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Came here during restaurant week, but would come back any time. Delicious steaks and chops. Interesting sides and cocktail menu. Lively atmosphere that brings the party!
We don’t like the new location. Doesn’t have warm vibe on original. Way too noisy. Couldn’t even talk to my husband. I sat on back bench and I had to look at crazy bright lights over front door all night. Not a good experience. The fix price meal for Restaurant Week is good deal and the meatloaf never disappoints!
The food was bland. The bread pudding was dry. I was disappointed. The lighting in the bathroom is good for pictures though.
The food is good and the service is great. If I were often in Jack London Sq., I would make this a regular stop over. We left a big tip because we had a really good waitress. Will return when convenient.
Food was good...
BUT,Portions were meager for price
We arrived at 5:45 when Chop Bar was only half full. Even then, the service was snail-like. When the guacamole and smoked pepitas arrived, they were almost too spicy too eat. The salads actually were excellent, but we had been at the restaurant almost an hour by the time they arrived, and the noise level had become almost unbearable. Our main courses were good but not great. The cioppino was the only standout. We ordered apple crisp for dessert, and we had to search for the crisp. We had been at the restaurant for nearly two hours. All in all, we did not think Chop Bar lived up to its reputation. We would go again if friends insisted, but otherwise, we would not return.
Visited a few times last year at old location starting with Oakland Restaurant Week. Old location was often crowded and very noisy but great foodg....first time at new location (again Restaurant Week specials). LOVE THE NEW LOCATION! Lots of room and not really all that noisy anymore. My wife and I were able to have a pleasant conversation. Oh, the food...loved the veggie pasta and the meatloaf. Very tasty arugula salad and squash soup too. My wife had the house special wine (bottomless Barbera) and I had a cocktail...both very good. We also enjoyed the banana chocolate chip bread pudding and the fruit crisp deserts that came with the price fix menu. Great service. Will definitely be back to this new location.
My sister had a lot of complaints with the service and her food that brought down the experience. My cheeseburger was moderate.
Chop bar was super busy and even tho we had a reservation we landed up waiting 20 more minutes for our table. The food is good but not great.
The food and service were just amazing! The muscles were some of the best I’ve ever had! Will definitely be returning
Maybe staff didn’t show up for their shift? Service was a non-existent mess.
I used to love Chop Bar but my most recent visit was disappointing. Service was very slow, took over ten minutes before anyone acknowledged us. My food took over twenty minutes to come. Portions were also pretty small. It seems like Chop Bar has gone downhill since moving to their new location. Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll be back.
Oyster Rockefeller were great and the Lamb Chops were fantastic. Everything else was standard. We were there for NYE and did really appreciate that they allowed us to split the pris fix menu. Overall its a casual dinning spot that held up well as a last minute NYE dinner choice.
Arrived a few minutes early and were promptly seated, even though two of our party had not yet arrived. Which was nice.
Waitress took our drink order.
When the rest of our party arrived our waitress returned, took their drink order and our appetizer order. When the other drinks arrived she took our dinner order. At this time we asked for wine glasses and opening of the wine our friends brought.
Helper checked on our water and cleared items regularly and was very nice. Dinner arrived, delivered by helpers. Waitress stopped by and we asked for glasses and opening of wine again.
Despite seeing her polishing stemware. Glasses never came and wine was never opened.
As table was being cleared we asked for desert menu. Waitress brought menu and then acknowledged that she had forgotten about wine/wine glasses. Asked if we wanted to open for desert.
Never saw waitress after that. Had to get helper to get bill and after a while had to flag down host to pay bill.
Sad, because the food and drinks were great. Work on the service and we would come back. Until then, not inclined to return.
Saw two other tables that had been there for some time. They had only received their drinks and were not looking happy at all.
We had so much time waiting that I was going g to write my review at the table, but, OpenTable doesn’t allow you to write a review while dining.
Ended up going two blocks away to Nido for desert and after dinner cocktails. Service their was great. Food and drinks were as well.
They accommodated our big group of 15 (even though it kept changing) ahead of time and were so gracious when serving the table when we were there. The food was delicious and the service was even better! Cute neighborhood spot.
Seated quickly. Staff very nice. My friend came in, sat down and they dropped my drink but didn’t ask him for his order for 10 minutes. Once his drink was ordered, it took about 15 to receive it. Same with food order. Took about 30 minutes for an egg sandwich and burger. Still good food and nice people. Just disjointed serve staff that needs to work out the Kinks.
Went to Chop Bar for brunch after my daughter’s graduation. Everyone enjoyed their meal and service was friendly and prompted. For a party of eight the overall price which included cocktails was good. I would definitely go back if I’m ever in that part of town again.
My daughter & granddaughter we’re happy that I brought them to Chop Bar. I’ve known this place since day one cause I live 3 blocks away.
Cool place with a good vibe. Food was delicious and served hot. Only small issue we had was service a little slow, but everything else made up for it. Will be back!
Amazing waiter handled our big group with kids!
Made reservations (for like 11:30p, but, still...there was a reservation). Arrived a few min early. Seated in a mostly-empty dining room. Got ignored for >15 minutes while the host/waiter person socialized with other tables while dodging our pleading eye contact. So we left and got decent service elsewhere (Mua is also open late...and was still packed. Probably because their service is good!)
Thank you fro hosting our team lunch. The space was perfect for what we needed. Food and service were great!
Always a great spot in the neighborhood.
Really great food and cocktails. The mussels were outstanding. The noise level, though, was such that we had to shout at each other to be heard.
Cool place and good food. Very accommodating to our to our large group!
Chop Bar is in a new location about a block from the old location.
Some window coverings over the large glass panel windows would help dampen the noise level.
The menu is loud and in charge too, but very well prepared and tasty.
I wasn't planning on proposing to my now fiance', but the moment seized me and I went ahead with it.
Received congratulatory applause from about 100 of the Chop Bar customers and a round of Bubbles on the house from the staff. Really nice...!
All in all, had a wonderful time, which we will never forget.
Inside was so hot and so loud that we opted for an outside table, even on a somewhat chilly evening (no heaters outside but we were desperate to talk to our dinner guests). Service was pleasant when we had it, but long periods of time went without anyone checking on us. Waited about 45 minutes for our four entrees (burgers - so good!) but given the long wait I'm not sure we'll rush back anytime soon.
Went to the Chop Bar for an anniversary brunch. Seating for two is limited to specific tables too close together at the rear of the dining area, or next to a wall. My polenta was too soupy and was lacking flavor and spices. My wife ordered a dish with poached eggs. They brought her the dish with over easy eggs, of which she was okay with. However, the server came back and told her they brought someone else’s order and gave her the dish with poached eggs. The dish was cold and the eggs were hard. Very disappointing. She sent it back and they gave her a new dish, but the experience was lost and we both ate at separate times. We were looking forward to the food since it had great reviews, but walked out disappointed and unsatisfied. Hope others have a better experience. We won’t be going back.
We had a fabulous dinner at Chop Bar. Everything was superb, especially the mussel dish - the soup base was beyond delicious! We so enjoyed everything and the service was delightful. We will surely be back!
With friends our drinks, appetizers, entree’s, and dessert were excellent. We’ll be back for sure. No misses so be sure to put this on your list.
The food was o.k but the service was horrible. Arriving at the host stand we were ignored until we finally interrupted the hostess/waitress on duty. She seated us and said waters were on the way. We had to signal her two times and ask again until we finally got them. She took drink orders and wanted to take food orders at the same time. We said we preferred to wait for our drinks and enjoy them for a while before ordering. Drinks took forever to arrive even though the restaurant was not that busy. Only one of our party thought their drink was pretty good. Might go there again for food but not drinks. After getting the drinks she totally ignored us and we finally had to get her to come back to take our order. She never checked to see if food was o.k. After giving us dessert menus she never came back and we had to call her to the table to get our check. We had a 7:30 reservation, only ordered drinks and entrees and didn't pay the bill until 10:00. Terrible lack of service.
Host 'lost' our reservation, every detail was missed: wasn't clean, food came out with major issues (bad fish, old salmon patties, cold meals, etc.), dirty bathrooms, unapologetic/aggressive server... Unfortunately just a really rare and bad eating experience in the Bay
The Chop Bar recently moved to a wonderful new location in the same area of Oakland. The menus (breakfast, lunch and dinner) are extensive with nice specials in addition to the regular fare and all three of us had very good meals. The staff is both very friendly and professional and the atmosphere is excellent. We will return soon!
We had lunch and were able to sit outside. Made for a nice, relaxing meal. Lunch choices are pretty limited but varied enough to satisfy everyone. Pear crisp dessert was very good.
Excellent Embarcadero community location! Great owners ! Great Oakland Economic Development Partner !!!
Menu was wrong so we ordered something which came out with totally different ingredients (pork vs fish). They said they'd comp for the issue but instead only comped for the original meals which were incorrect-until we objected. Service was friendly but slow. Ordered two drinks which were on menu but also not available. If the menu is printed each day - how can it be so wrong?
Customer service was really bad. Felt like they were all over the place
