Duck Fat Fries
five dot ranch beef, schoch family cheese, balsamic onion, model bakery bun
mushroom & oat, aioli, aged cheddar
A most pleasant surprise, because the ambience (a little austere), belies the food (warm and cozy). French fries fried in duck fat? Yea baby! The tomato salad is divine, sole sandwich wonderful. Our server (Ben) recommended a Trefethen Sauvignon blanc, which was the perfect choice. GO!
50/50 on good and bad menu items @ dinner (don't waste $ on the duck fries, steak incorrectly sliced). Polenta and eggplant were really good. Pork was a good serving and flavor. Salmon was a normal portion and although simple did taste good & cooked well. Service is engaged and friendly until it gets busy then you become forgotten.
We had to wait 75 minutes for our main course after ordering with no apologies or explanation.
"Artichoke ravioli" was one dry ravioli with the artichoke hard to taste and an overdone quail egg on top. Duck breast was ok, bavette was ok, but nothing extraordinary.
Every restaurant has a bad day, but at these exalted prices it helps if the staff is at least apologetic and cares.
I had a wonderful lunch outside. Loved the duck fat fries and burger. My wine from Croatia, Posip Toreta, was unique and delicious and I bought bottles to go (1/2 price off menu!). Compline is a great downtown Napa restaurant. Enjoy!
I’m a local. It was my 2nd time there in a few weeks. Same awful experience. Both times not receiving items ordered. No check backs on tables. It was such a waste of money. Also, I set my card down on one of the visits because it took so long to get the check. The server returned my card with just the charge slip. I tipped 20% post tax even after awful service. Then I asked for the receipt and he comes back to the table with a printed receipt. Only then did he disclose the tip was included. That’s dishonest.
The service was good and we enjoyed the food. We were seated between two fairly noisy tables, which detracted from the overall experience. We were seated outside, so the overall experience was quite enjoyable.
Service was a little slow but friendly. The food was fantastic and the ambiance very pleasant, decor in excellent taste.
Fresh, interesting approaches to food. Great wine selection. Excellent service. Delicious!
We had a 5pm reservation for inside. The server was very attentive and had great wine pairing recommendations. We had an excellent sweet wine and nice light red. Our favorite items were the eggplant, duck breast and squid ink capellini.
Very subtle details that make the food and service stand out. Squid ink capellini had buttery goodness and umami from the pasta while bursts of tomatoes would add a freshness. Bits of garlic give you a crunch while the seafood pieces were fresh and bring you back to the sea.
Good wasn’t with the price. Wine is good so drink enough you probably will think the food is good. Fries are the only thing we’d order again. Salmon was small and fishy and the $75 steak was sub par at best. Not sure what all the hype is here
The place sucked.
Excellent experience. All of the food was fresh and delicious. Loved the squid ink pasta!
Great food and knowledgeable staff
Pork chop was the worst I’ve ever had. Heaters were on full blast and after repeated requests to turn them down, waiter didn’t. Won’t be going back anytime soon.
An excellent place in terms of food, service and ambiance
Server and food were great! The guy at the table next to us wouldn’t shut up the entire time. Service charge was weird I still don’t know what it was for whether it had anything to do with gratuity or not but whatever the meals were outstanding!
Thanks Eric! The service charge (15%) allows us to pay fair wages for both our service and kitchen staff and also enables us to pay for full health insurance coverage for all full-time staff members. We don't expect tips on top of that unless you feel the service went above and beyond.
Really amazing Experience, food, wine and service! The fries! Spectacular
We had high expectations, but several miscues let us down. With this our first visit to Compline, things got off to a rough start having entered the restaurant through their patio entrance. We were ignored for several uncomfortable minutes with the host standing in front of us, but his back was turned, speaking to another employee. Finally checked in for our reservation and a late afternoon lunch.
Having scanned the menu and wine list we settled on the cheese board and bottle of Sauvignon Blanc to start. They didn’t have a bottle chilled and had offered a splash of Verdicchio while the wine was chilling. I thought this was a nice gesture on their part until the bill came and we were charged $26 for two “splashes” not even a full pour!
The cheese board came out and was fabulous, also by this time our wine was chilled and served. We were not paying attention and the waiter just refilled our glasses with the Verdicchio, not offering new glasses. Not a huge issue but this is wine country.
For lunch our waiter suggested the “special” NY steak frites, duck fat fries and red wine jus, which my wife chose and asked for this medium rare. I ended up with the cheese burger as it was touted one of the best in Napa.
The entrees can out hot and looking good. The NY steak presliced and surrounded by a hot stack of duck fat fries. Unfortunately the steak was very rare and not medium rare. Again not a huge issue and my wife tried it out. Too rare, the fat had not rendered and inedible for her. My burger, very good.
This is we’re the service really let us down, our waiter never came back, ever…we’ll about 45 minutes later. Apologized, noticed my wife did not eat the steak and mentioned it looked too rare. Offered a complementary dessert, but we were ready to go a this this point. The restaurant did comp the cheese board, a nice gesture. Everyone has bad days, maybe we expected too much based on other reviews. Sadly we cannot recommend.
Slowest service that I’ve ever seen. We waited for our simple orders for about 45 minutes. We finally asked them to cancel our starter and box the rest since we didn’t have time left, it took another 45 mins to get 4 sandwiches boxed and given to us.
Solid offerings with a great wine list. Nice location to everything in downtown Napa.
Best burger I ever ate. food was delicious, good service, but pricey. It cost us $115 for 2 burgers with no extras, 1 order of fries, and 2 glasses of Napa wine. The selection of wines by the bottle is large. For wine by the glass, very weak. We each had a glass of the only local wine ($18) on the wine by the glass menu.
But the food was excellent!
The menu is very limited with options. I was not aware they added 15% service fee on your bill. This makes me feel like we are in San Francisco. I am not a fan of imposed service fee's.
Great experience. They were short staffed but they still had excellent service!
Only drawback was that the heaters were not very adequate - was quite cold- other than that it was great.
Fantastic food, wine, and service! Can't wait to go back very soon.
Excellent outdoor dining experience. Fantasy food.
Found this little gem tucked back in the mall walkway next to Eiko's. Nice and creative menu and an interesting variety of beer and wine.
Great food and ambiance. The service however was quite slow. about 90 minutes to get our entrees.
Great Liberty Duck dish and Steak Bavette was cooked perfectly. Nice wine selection.
Nicest people and most delicious food. Our family enjoyed our dinner very much.Thank you!!
A solid restaurant with amazing food and wine selection. The f
Exceptional! I live in Napa and this is now my absolute favorite place to eat in Napa! The burger and duck fat fries are perfection. Last week, the chef had a BLT. It was the best sandwich I have ever had. The ingredients were amazing and super fresh. Ben was our server- fantastic! Love love love Compline! Look at those tomatoes on that BLT! Heaven!
Stellar wines, delicious dishes and lovely service--always fantastic!
I brought my grandma for her 98th birthday and we couldn't have had a nicer lunch. The ambiance was casual yet polished and we had a lovely table indoors in a spot that was open on one side and enjoyed the gentle breeze. Our server was fantastic - his wine suggestion was spot-on, and he even poured a taste for myself and my husband (we ended up buying a bottle!). He was sweet and funny, with great food and wine expertise. Our meal was surprisingly delicious - we started with a guanciale and melon appetizer, which was a fun combo of decadent and fresh. We had chosen Compline because we'd heard their burger was outstanding, and that's what Grandma had requested, but they worked some sort of sorcery on those burgers (I had one too) that resulted in our vowing to return for more. The duck fat fries were an expression of savory crunchiness that put to shame any other such fries in this valley. And my husband's chicken sandwich is his new favorite.
It's easy to forget about this spot, tucked away in the sleepy part of a strange town center, but after this meal, it's inked indelibly onto my mind, and we shall return often.
The exceptional wine list is always the primary attraction here, but with the addition of a new chef the menu gets even more exciting. Go for the best fries on the planet, stay for the champagne and innovative menu.
Delicious food - particularly enjoyed the gazpacho - flavorful and a tiny bit spicy. The duck breast was a nice large portion and delicious. The french fries fried in duck fat were perfect -crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.
Only regret is that we were so full from dinner that we just couldn't even try dessert - though the 2 choices sounded delicious.
Our server was prompt and efficient. Definitely would eat here again.
Great service, excellent food
The food was phenomenal. Service was great. Would definitely come back.
We had a wonderful lunch here with good wine and a simple menu. We also picked up a few bottles from the curated wine shop selection. Highly recommended!
Restaurant was fine. But, I went on a wild goose chase trying to find the place. Didn’t help that I ended up walking nearly two miles because I had the wrong address! And the addrsss was provided by Open Table! I assumed it was accurate. Big mistake! I won’t use this service in the future.
