I love this restaurant and have eaten here numerous times. I was disappointed that salmon is no longer an option to have with your salad. The scallops I had instead were very good.
We took advantage of the Wednesday special for 59.95 and it was good value when compared with ordering the selections a la carte. The cheese plate was interesting with a collection of hard and soft cheeses and all were finished except one. The small peppers while not hot, were decorative but I didn't care for them taste wise. Not offensive but not to my liking. Not the fault of the house. We added a second appetizer from the menu and were delighted we did. The popcorn cauliflower was immensely enjoyable with different sized pieces both meaty in texture and crispy accompanied by a light dipping sauce that we couldn't identify but we both enjoyed it thoroughly and a perfect match with the cauliflower.
Our entrees, hers the seafood pasta, was lively with shrimp but you had to hunt for the scallop. Overall though the dish was tasty. I had the stuffed chicken but I guess I read the wrong description of the dish as I expected it to be boneless and stuffed with pork, etc. It was not. The piece was small and offered a bone which certainly added to the flavour but could have been removed before serving.
Perhaps the previous description betrays our preference for more down home fare. The service was prompt, friendly and efficient.
Regarding ambiance. I like the layout of the restaurant but they need to get rid of radio station content and play music more akin to something not Top 40. Mix it up by playing a variety of world music, baroque guitar, Cuban, some African styles but also jazz in its oh so many styles would add to the ambiance of the room and give guests and patrons a different experience than the usual bland offerings in too many establishments. You might even want to offer a musical package themed dinner night with a dining experience coupled with the music of the region. Say New Orleans Jazz with some gumbo, etc. We liked our visit enough that we will be back to visit the pub and sample that fare. Overall we rate the experience as a 3.5
Great food and amazing service, we were there at 1:30 on a Saturday when they are still serving their brunch menu. The selection was still very good however it would have been nice to have a choice between brunch and lunch. One couple next to us actually were seated and left once they learned it was just the brunch menu. Still a great spot!
I have to say I was quite dissappointed in the new menu since the change in owners. There were some staples on the original that were great. We had burgers, wraps and ribs. All were just okay but very $$$. The appetizer menu was limited. Everything food wise seemed limited and didn't leave any of the group wishing for more. The cheesecake and brownie were delicious. Would I go back, not without a menu change!
We love edible matters. We were a bit worried when it changed ownership, but from our experience, things are still great.
Having dined here several times in the past I was very disappointed. 3 of the 4 at my table had mediocre meals - not a lot of taste & small servings. (Pasta dish with 3 shrimp & 1 scallop cut in 3, too much pasta & bland sauce). Appetizers were just ok. Lots of noise from the pub area. This used to be a place for a nice dinner experience. Sorry to see the change.
This was my first visit at your restaurant for brunch. I was pleasantly surprised. It is nice to have a unique restaurant in our neighborhood. The service was extremely pleasant and efficient, and the restaurant was clean. Food prices were good, however my potatoes were only lukewarm. I found were I sat to be very noisy an if I reserved again I would ask for a quieter location.
Beautiful food, nice atmosphere! The waitress was particularly kind to my grand daughter!
We went for a nice dinner and we were so impressed with the food, service and ambience! We had a fabulous time! The only feedback I would like to give is that it would be nice if glasses of water were offered, or on the table, as we had a reservation. Otherwise, it was fabulous and I look forward to going back! Thank you!
We had hoped with the new owners the service level would improve at EM. It is such a great spot for our community. We live within walking distance and would love to be able to use the pub on a regular basis. The service continually has us making alternate choices. During this visit the appetizer arrived cold and at the same time as the entrée. Though the server blamed the kitchen the fact that it was cold seemed more like she forgot it. Often the server is not around to order drinks and we leave earlier than planned. You're really missing out on business due to the service level. I used to recommend EM and no longer do.
Was disappointed in the food. Service and ambiance very good.
Unfortunately, there was a new dinner menu the night we went. I had hoped the new owners would not change too much, but the new menu was disappointing. There were only 5-6 appetizer choices and 5-6 entrees. I'm hoping this was just a trial, and not a long term plan. As they say, don't fix what's not broken! Of course, we'll be back, but maybe just for breakfast!
We had a wonderful evening at Edible Matters. The service was top notch and the food was very good. In particular, the special for the evening, the pork stuffed chicken wrapped in bacon with roasted vegetables was exceptional. The pecan bread pudding with whiskey sauce for dessert is a must. The overall experience was above expectation. It is nice to know that there is a relaxed, higher end dining experience in our area that is great value for the money.
I think EM has the best brunch in Halifax. they have amazing local ingredients and fresh baked goods. I stick with the bacon/egg/sausage breakfast and it never disappoints.
