The Formosa Cafe is a restaurant and bar founded in 1939 and located at 7156 Santa Monica Boulevard at the intersection with North Formosa Avenue, in West Hollywood, California.

The restaurant has a long history of movie star and film industry patronage due to its close proximity to studio lot across the street, which began as the United Artists lot and was later owned by Warner Bros. Generations of movie stars such as Humphrey Bogart and Clark Gable have eaten meals at The Formosa. Frank Sinatra is reputed to have spent many nights at the Formosa in the 1950s, pining over Ava Gardner.

After a brief 2 year hiatus, a complete refurbishment, and a tremendous menu update The Formosa Cafe has returned to serve the Los Angeles community once again.

    Service and food were amazing, as was the ambience. The noise level in the back room is unbearable. Next time I have a party larger than 4, I’ll request the booth in between the two dining rooms

    I loved this restaurant. I cannot wait to go back. We went in for mainly drinks and appetizers. They did not disappoint . We tried the veggie spring rolls, pot stickers, soup dumplings and chili dumplings and they were delicious. The matador drink was also great. The ambience was just right and the history of the location was so interesting. I will definitely come back.

    It's a beautiful looking place but there were some large, noisy groups there which made it difficult to talk. The food was ok but not amazing.

    Great ambiance and that’s about it. Much hyped Hollywood Spot. Famous location and reputation of the old Hollywood days. Beautiful restored. But, poor service, nice enough but not professional. Famous Mai Tai, way too sweet. Original was like a Polynesian Martini. Braised Pork board was way over cook. Difficult to cut into and dry meat. Could hardly cut it. And wontons, again over fried, dry stuffing. Server asked how everything was, so we told him. He shrugged and walked away. Cool music and vibe. Cool for drinks and new old Hollywood experience.

    Very noisy in the old train car where we were seated, and the table was barely big enough for plates. The waiter was pleasant but not attentive- we always had to flag him down. The cocktails and decor were good. Food was mediocre, and could have used much more sauce. Their payment system was terrible- you have to scan a QR code and enter a ton of manual information- what an inhospitable buzz kill at the end of a meal!

    What a great, hopping, Hollywood vibe on a rainy, November night. I don't know if there are any deals still getting done in this town, but it sure felt like it at the Formosa Cafe last night. Hipsters and starched-shirt office workers, young and old, rich and poor, and what looked to be some kind of psychic healer in the booth next to me. Atmosphere: on point for a historic haunt that's been around since the days of noir and feels like you just stepped back into the 30s (albeit with baseball caps instead of fedoras.) Oh, and did I mention that it's some of the best Americanized Chinese food you've ever had, served up hot and fast with delicious cocktails. Oh, Formosa, you're definitely ready for your close up!

    First visit after living in the area over 20 years. We sat in the train car and had an absolutely delightful dinner. The setting was perfect, like dining on the Orient Express. I had their steak and broccolini and my wife had the wonton soup. Both were delicious. We will definitely return.

    We went on a Monday night and they have a weekly night trivia which we joined and enjoyed. While the food was served hot and was tasty (orange chicken and beef and broccolini), overall the restaurant seemed to be 'having a bad night' in terms of service- with a less than attentive staff, delays getting drinks and one dish that just went missing and never showed up (was later provided at the end of our meal at no charge so that was a nice gesture at least). The bartender was apparently a no-show that night, and the rest of the wait staff were unmemorable... not really providing that service with a smile that would have been nice to create an ambiance. A good example was the hostess walking us to our seats so fast that she lost us on the way and wasn't even aware that we were not right behind her! We had more interaction with the host of the trivia night- maybe they should hire him as a host:). I hope they work to make guest more welcome otherwise maybe try it just for a cocktail and apps at the bar.

    This is one of our favorite LA restaurants. Dripping with atmosphere and fantastic food and cocktails. We always make a point of taking visitors from other states. They love it too.

    Everything was fresh and made to perfection. I cannot wait to return and try more delicious food options. The ambiance was sexy and vibrant, and recommend for a night out on a date or with friends! The matcha martini is definitely a must try. Cannot wait to be back soon.

    The waiter was gracious and attentive but not overbearing, the food was divine and heftily portioned, the ambience was classy and fun, my girlfriend loved all the pictures of old stars! This was our first time here and I was blown out of the water. :)

    Best Chinese restaurant in LA that has Gluten Free GF and Nut Free NF options and makes an effort on their menu and their fabulous sweet waiters to help you! Not to mention the amazing history and restoration! We're coming back and will keep coming back. ALSO, great drinks - I barely drink but I LOVED the fabulous cocktail, which was Marilyn Monroe‘a favorite.

    Asian food that is so over-loaded with sodium and garlic that no other flavors were able to co-exist. Almost inedible. The interior is great, nostalgic, quirky and LOUD. My friend and I were both hoarse after eating there because we had to shout across the very small table. It's already deafening, and they needlessly add a DJ to the mix - totally unnecessary. Definitely NOT the place to take a date or eat. MAYBE to meet friends for a few drinks, but this place is resting on nostalgia and is trying to be hip instead of serving edible food.

    Myself & my party had an amazing time! We sat at Elvis Presley's table, who used to frequent the cafe as well as many other celebrities.It got pretty loud at some points,which was hard to hear ourselves talk & hold a conversation. However, it did not discredit our amazing service or our experience at hand.

    The waitress was in Narnia. He forgot out order, told us to discount that, he did not. Also, he brought us the check with a togo box fot the forgotten order and drop it on top of the food. So… disappointing

    Our server Brian was great; helpful and knowledgeable. We loved our private table with the screens. We felt like we were in an opium den from the 40s. The hostess was very kind also. She let us choose our table and it made the night special. Thank you to the entire staff. We will return.

    Food was typically really good, but Formosa let’s itself down time after time: 1) service - it took 20 minutes to order a drink and menu, then after the food arrived I had to remind the server of my drink 2) all of the three dishes arrived separately at different times vs. all together, meaning our group were eating at different times 3) the music was too loud on the patio, it kept going higher and higher, which meant we couldn’t hear the group around the table
