Excellent food but the FXMP menu extremely small portions and so very overpriced. Waiter did not mention bread was available but only on request so we missed out. Noisy to the point we could not clearly here the waiter converse. Cup of black coffee 6 bucks extra. With tip and wine pairings about 400 bucks out the door (for two) G ood creative menu but nothing that justifies that price point.

Have you ever had such a good restaurant experience that you wake up the next morning still thinking about the creativity of the dishes and genius of the sommelier’s wine pairing? That’s really the best way to describe our experience last night at our neighborhood favorite, Frances. It’s so nice to see some of the old wait staff still working with Chef Melissa, and so wonderful that this pop-up has brought back amazing cuisine to our area. The scallops could not have been prepared and cooked better, the lumache was extraordinary, and the duck leg with coraline chickories was sublime. We hope to come back again soon to celebrate our next special occasion!
We had a wonderful birthday dinner at Frances and were so happy to be dining there again! The only negative was that since the bday boy is sometimes fussy about seafood, I requested substitutions for the seafood dishes, upon being asked about dietary considerations on the phone.
Instead of substitutions, the dishes were just brought out without the seafood--more a subtraction than a substitution.
Anyway, I shared my scallops and it was still a fabulous meal!

it was ok, not great. the duck platter was unintelligible, the duck was overcooked. the crust on the dessert was rock-hard, the mandarin oranges may as well have come out of a can. the salads were fine but completely conventional. the meal was billed as farm to table, but that was nowhere in evidence. the reservation solicited our input about the nature of the meal (celebration), and the wait staff was attentive, but did not engage one word with us on either the food, its preparation, or its relation to our celebration. the beverage options for people who don't or can't drink alcohol were: water. for context, i am a very senior zen buddhist monk, i live alone, cook every meal w/o exception as norcal compositions of temple cuisine. going out to eat is a rare event for me, this particular event was billed as an 'experience' but that came out in practice as pure marketing.
I don't want to write this review because I want to keep Frances for us.. but this is our favorite restaurant and have not been disappointed by a single meal here in over 5 years.
Food is delicious and service is good but Pre fixed menu not a good value.
One of the best restaurants ever! Fantastic and fresh produce and meat in creative and unpretentious lreststion. A flawless and attentive staff including Mara., Sara, Scott and manager Molly!
We’ve been coming to Frances for 11 of its 12 years and it’s like coming home every time. We love the food and people and feel so lucky to be here every time.

Delicious…every bite is comforting and surprising, clean and mysterious, reason to dine out! Love devouring food created with care and finger/spoon licking duck-bone-suck’n good! I appreciate dishes that not only look beautiful but tastes better than it looks and highlighting the best of every ingredient, especially the vegetables. As my kids like to quote from Pride and Prejudice… “potatoes…such an exemplary vegetable!” And love that they have Hog Island oysters too. I’ve been away too long from this special place and hope to cross the bay bridge to frequent it more often.
Simply the best
Great pop-up, not knowing what the pre-fixe menu would be we were mostly happy with the offerings and they were very on point with our dietary restrictions, although some of the substitutes weren't as substantial as what they replaced. Overall we enjoyed our meal and were happy to be back to Frances, but are looking forward to when it fully reopens with a menu to choose from.
Really lovely meal- everything was prepared to perfection and every dish was unique with an excellent assortment of fresh local ingredients. Truly a world-class meal served with warmth in a clean and cozy atmosphere. Highly recommend for special occasion dining.
It was my fiancé’s birthday and we had his parents in town we had a great time and all of us loved the food! I was vegetarian and the chef did great job to make my dishes as exiting and delicious and others. Thank you 🤍🙌

This was one of the FXMP pre- reopening dinners at Frances--prefix menu with a portion of the proceeds going to a charity--for this evening to Meals on Wheels. The four course menu was sublime--both simple and elegant at the same time. Roasted Sunchoke Soup, Ricotta Toast with Chicory Lettuces, Grilled Filet of Flannery Beef and to close, Julia's (as in Julia Child's) Flourless Chocolate Torte. Each small course was perfection and the wine pairings were spot on. Service was efficient and friendly and is a big part of a delightful evening. As always an evening at Frances is an absolute treat.
Went here for date night during one of Chef Melissa Perello's pop-up dinners, it was one of our favorite meals of all time. Highly recommend this place, the staff is very friendly and the food is always amazing. Get their appetizer soups, they have the best soups in the city (trust me, my partner is a soup connoisseur).
One of my favorite restaurants in the world. Fresh, vibrant, California dining. Amazing food, service, ambiance. It’s got a local feel with exquisite cuisine.

Frances is such a special experience and we are so thrilled they are back! The special menu we had on October 21st was absolutely amazing and I would highly recommend trying to get a reservation for the special menu dates in November. A creative and
mouth watering menu from start to finish and the Frances family is so knowledgeable, kind, and gracious. And they love to tell you more about the menu if you are interested. My husband did the wine pairing with each course and it was perfect! It was just the intimate dining experience we wanted to celebrate my husband's birthday!
Ate at Frances before the pandemic. It was our favorite restaurant . The food at the Pop Up dinner was just mediocre and very expensive. Maybe when they return to nightly a la carte dinners, the quality of the food will improve back to pre-pandemic levels.
So happy that our beloved Frances is back! The prefix menu was outstanding, and so were the pairing wines and the service - a perfect celebration of my husband's birthday.

This is one of San Francisco's finest neighborhood restaurants. The cooking is sublime, the staff are attentive and warm, and the ambiance is comfortable and polished. Simply the best.
The menus was quite good. we did the wine pairing and loved 3 of the wines and the 3rd, a dolcetto d’alba with the short rib was good but, not as good as the other 3. so glad to see this place is back in business!

We went for the FxMP pop-up experience. It was spectacular! One of my favorite meals in a long while. We’ve always loved Frances, but I was actually blown away by every dish here. The flavors were so fresh and consistently delicious. We dined early, and I would recommend it before things start getting really busy. If you can, hurry and snag reservations to one of these pop-up meals with the superlative Chef Melissa Perello in the kitchen — we feel so lucky we did! (The waiter said there will probably be more in October and November) Thank you to the Chef and all the staff for the deeply enjoyable experience, I left in a better mood than I’ve been in ages.
We were there for a Prix fixe menu and it was stellar. The team made sure to ask us days in advance if we had any restrictions on our diet so they could accommodate us. Everyone here is so sweet and kind. So glad they are finally open again after so long.
I was thrilled to be able to take advantage of the pop-up dining experience at Frances this weekend. The menu was fantastic, I didn't need to choose as the meal was carte blanche and I loved most of the selections, especially the chanterelle mushroom toast with creme fraiche and the paccheri pasta with pork ragout and cabbage. I recommend the wine pairing, it certainly added to the overall experience. Looking forward to the restaurants formal reopening. BTW, the outside seating is quite comfortable.
