Delicious food and attentive service, great alcoholic and nonalcoholic pairings that complement the dishes well.
What can I say. Second time coming to Frilu has been another fantastic experience. With the theme of winter, Frilu has done a fantastic job of guiding us through the cold with their well thought-out menu. Service is great and the bottle of Ontario "champagne Kombucha" is amazing. Kudos to Frilu and their teaming for delivering high standard tasting menu and drinks. We will be back. Hopefully soon!
Good food, good service and reasonable price. My wife likes the non alcoholic pairing. This is already our fourth time back here.
Exceptional service, amazing presentation. High quality food. Will definitely go back...
Called a week ahead and chef put together an amazing 8 course vegetarian meal. It is worth it for the price
Absolutely outstanding service and exceptional food. Wonderful experience.
Very good service and food was amazing
Really reasonable pricing given the extensive tasting menu. Portions were on the smaller side, but that allowed us to enjoy everything without feeling absolutely stuffed. Service was great, very attentive and knowledgeable about the food, it's preparation, and the wines that were paired with it.
Each course was a marvel! The aromas and flavours were amazing and complemented by such lovely presentation. The wine and sake pairings were great. Service was lovely and you can tell that everyone enjoys being there.
To kick off the New Year and to help us forget about all those pathetic, mass-produced party food. My foodie partner and I decided to pay a visit to this neighborhood dining destination for a round of innovative and refined Nordic/Japanese fusion cooking by Chefs Troiano and Sakata.
Wow! What an enjoyable meal from start to finish!
Both chef Troiana and Sakata really out did themselves with this new menu offering. IMO, the best and most delicious of our four visits! Every dish possesses its own uniquely independent and diverse appeal, both in terms of taste profile and textural interplay. Even a simple ‘amuse‘ skewer of lettuce topped with house made sweet chickpea miso dressing and crunchy pumpkin seed managed to garner an head nodding ‘wow’ approval from us. A few humble nuggets of juicy, piping hot, turnips with a surprising green herbal filling could well be one of the tastiest morsels of root vegetable I have ever eaten! Other stand out dishes include the warm Oysters, the sous-vide Scallops paired with a home-made ' oyster sauce tasting ' beef garum, the melt-in-the-mouth, fork tender braised Bison short-ribs paired with a most aromatic red-wine based sauce, the pan seared, salt-cured Blue Cod with sweet, house wasabi foam.......etc.
Remembering we have already savored the duck and rice dish from our previous fall visit, Chef Troiano automatically substituted the duck with some perfectly cooked and tender Ontario Angus Striploin! What a nice touch and gesture! This type of attention and professional approach alone is well worth our repetitive visit. Coupled with the great food, great value and great service, making this place our ' neighborhood canteen ' is a natural no brainer!
Best restaurant I tried so far in Canada (including some top ones such as Toque, Canoe). Top in the modern gourmet entry level restaurant. Would make it into the bib gourmand category in a top restaurant market such as Copenhagen, NYC, Chicago.
A fantastic tasting menu with attentive service from the entire staff. The wine pairing was fantastic and the ambiance was very good. This type of experience is usually only available downtown Toronto so having it up here is great. Good value and I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a fine dining experience and would return there myself when the menu changes.
The food is incredible! There needs to be some fabric in the room so that we can to hear the staff describing the food and wine better. The staff is very attentive and very friendly.
At this third visit, Frilu is keeping up with the food and service. We will visit again and look forward to the chef’s inspiration.
Nice place intimate food was interesting and tasty.
Great service, fun and creative menu. I think I'd enjoy the fall/summer menu more, as I believe it may be more diverse, as the winter menu was rich and hearty, but I believe leveraged similar flavours across the courses.
Frilu is totally incredible for all your senses. The room is peaceful and beautifully designed. Staff are friendly but at the same time very professional. There is a very good wine and sake knowledge. The food....stunning in its presentation but magnificent in tastes and flavours. I love how Chef Owner John world incredibly hard to focus in on both the seasons and master utilizing all parts of the product for little waste.
This is a place for romance as well as special occasions ur personally I can’t wait just to dine here again. Try and sit at the bar by the kitchen to watch the chef ballet.
Please follow @joannasable on instagram for more food and travel fun.
We were looking for Pearl Morissette in Toronto and found Frilu.
Booked again in January when winter menue will be out.
Great service and hospitality. Kelly and Nina are knowledgeable and gracious. Food was delicious, tasty and served in perfect portion sizes. First time I tried sea urchin.
The only 2 improvements I would suggest is to deam the lights a little to make the ambiance more personal and highlight the tea lights. Second is the smell. When we entered, I didn't expect to smell fried fish, I don't think there was any fish served, but that what it smelled in a bright room.
When we start eating we got used to the smell so was okay.
We asked for more bread as it was the best I have ever tasted. Perfection. I recommend this place to everyone who enjoys food and I'd open to new experiences.
The fall menu was very thoughtful, delicious and flawlessly executed. The service was friendly and attentive.
Consistently amazing from food to service. Sitting at bar is always fun as you can watch the motion in kitchen. The kitchen is squeaky clean as they do scrubbing every night after closing. The cleaningness of kitchen speaks the very quality of the restaurant. Looking forward to their winter menu.
Good experience overall. Can’t imagine how crowded it would be if they located at dt.
A fabulous evening with an interesting menu and comfortable service
Excellent tasting menu, service and ambiance.
The restaurant has elevated GTA ‘s culinary offer to the next level. Great work !!
Thrilled to notice the latest, ‘Fall tasting menu offering’ - ‘Leaves change, Brisk morning’ on their website two weeks back, I immediately took action and made reservation.
With Scandinavian, Japanese and other seasonal exotic ingredients that include Venison, Horse meat, Shima-Aji, Uni, Maitake mushroom, Ikura, Bone Marrow, Lobster, Duck…..etc, coming out in full force. The brand-new and revamped tasting menu looks like another delightful and fun culinary adventure in the making?! I cannot wait!
This evening, after settling down at our intimate table, close to the open kitchen. My foodie partner and I each ordered a glass of nicely chilled, relatively uncommon, spicy and floral Manseng based white, Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh and patiently await for the delivery of our food by the now, well acquainted and friendly staff.
Our reaction after the completion of the well proportioned meal? A few loud and satisfying burps coupled with a collective exclamation of OMG!! For me, the experience was like being nostalgically transported back to one of my Tokyo food-crawl and having a Michelin star caliber western /Japanese fusion meal at say, Le Sputnik, DEN or Sincere….etc......but at only a fraction of the price!
The meal was ‘ mucho-memorable ‘, the execution near flawless ( only minor miss was the slight heavily-handed use of salt in the horse tartar and rye crisp), the plating artfully presented, the food tasted increasingly wonderful as the meal progresses, with links to some interesting textural interplay, the wine pairing spot-on, the service warm and attentive……etc.
In summary…..the total package was most gratifying and at only $95 for 10 courses, incredible value and did not disappoint! There were even a few wow factors popping up now and then.…..a rarity nowadays!
When it comes to tasting menu, “ALO” is definitely the undisputed occupant of the ‘Downtown Iron Throne‘. However, up north in the land of the 905, "FRILU" is the new 'Omakase king of the North'!
Services are excellent, very friendly. I would recommend to my friends. Looking forward to try the veggie menu.
We went to Frilu for our 3rd wedding anniversary. We wanted a unique dining experience and something delicious of course. We got way more than we expected. The service was exceptional. They described in such vivid detail every dish we were served as well as the drinks we were given. I highly recommend the non-alcoholic accompaniment as it was so unique and really complimented the meal. They were very thoughtful and gave us a small bouquet of flowers and a happy anniversary note written on a disk of wood. I can't recommend this restaurant enough. Be aware that this is a tasting menu dining experience. We will be going back soon with my dad and some friends.
All courses were presented exquisitely. Can’t say all the dishes overwhelmed me taste wise. We order the wine accompaniment and somehow we were left with no wine for the main course. When we asked, we were told that the pouring for the previous course was for 2 courses. We were not told that and the amount poured certainly would not have indicated that. Strange that they would not have just poured any other 1.5 oz. also they should have told us that 3 of the pairings was with sake. We are not same fans and would have preferred to substitute wine. We will not go back. Not the WOW we were expecting for the money spent.
This is my second time in two weeks. I still love the Pumpkin Patch, the desserts. Surprise that they add a pork dish before the duck rice, the pork is so delicious. Thank you JV . Definitely will visit again in a near future.
We enjoyed every dish! Would definitely come back for another season's menu!:)
Very nice dishes and you’re up for a surprise at every course. They have one tasting menu per season which I think is disappointing because I wouldn’t want to have the same menu twice. I suggest that the very nice chef offers 2-3 menus per season. Great experience and fantastic staff
Amazing experience all around! Both food and service were outstanding.
So happy to see a top notch tasting menu restaurant in Richmond Hill! Service was wonderful, everyone is very welcoming and know the dishes well. You would feel well taken care of yet you are not at the tip of toes.
Food was very creative, love the surprising combination and the team's thought of names too! Definitely will come back and spread the word. Thank you everyone at Frilu for making the night so wonderful!
One suggestion would be to put the parking suggestions on the website, it was quite confusing of where to park.
The winter menu is amazing! JV did a marvelous job, the pumpkin patch is so tasty. I am not a sweet person, but the yogurt and parsnip desserts, I can have seconds any time! The cabbage is a surprise too! Thank you JV, Kelli, Leo and your staff for giving me a wonderful dining experience! Definitely I will come again!
I was genuinely surprised to find a high-end "omakase-style" restaurant in Thornhill. The Fall fixed menu was as advertised - earthy and rich. Very unexpected combinations - tofu and sea urchin, mushroom and salmon roe
I liked the minimalistic design: nothing to steer attention from the experience of taste buds.
The service was exceptional.
Will come back to Winter menu
Great food and pairing experience. It's very re-comforting to know they use local seasonal ingredients in the menu - it is kind of fresh and "innovative". It was also interesting to see pairing including a variation of SAKE, made the experience very different to our recent visit to ALO - while having similar experience.
They also have a quite interesting selection of japanese/asian beers that we found interesting.
Restaurant has limited space, making it quite intimate, and has a very minimalist set-up. No overwhelming deco nor visible bar - it was very zen. I would have loved to see the lights deemed a little bit to make it cozier - lighting was a bit too much for an evening dinner.
Food and 10 meal course was amazing and variated. Must experience
Initial seating was dreadful(next to the privy corridor). Very loud, boisterous party overpowering the rest of the restaurant. Many of the dishes were inartfully executed both in terms of the taste and texture pairings (looking at you, Pumpkin). The restaurant's decorations (fake lichen, for example) were a hit-or-miss proposal. Excellent wine list. Front of House service was excellent, however there was an inconsistency in dish timing that frequently left us wondering what was happening with our dishes.
The rice was not good and one wine pairing didnt work but other than that we really love the place and the staff. We will come back with our friends :)
Excellent service and food. The presentation and creativity were superb throughout each of the courses. Will definitely recommend to friends.
