Great food. They were able to help us add people to our reservation, the day of. We had 10 in total. Food came out all at once and was hot and delicious. Drinks were great as well.
FRINGALE was an ABSOLUTE outstanding and pleasing experience from the moment we stepped in.
There is just such a beautiful atmosphere at Fringale and the staff was was professional, respectful and warm and caring.
Loved it! Great great food!
We went to Fringale to celebrate our wedding anniversary last week. It was the 3rd time we'd been there, so we knew the food would be outstanding. This was the first time the restaurant was so full, however, so we were a little surprised to see how crowded it was. It's probably why our service was a little more perfunctory than it had been before; it took 2 requests before our waiter would come take our appetizer order. This particular waiter is not especially friendly, but once we were served he was attentive and timely. The food, as always, was outstanding. We started with a trio of cheeses served with fresh bread, fruit paste and apples; one of us had the night's special coq au vin, one had the lamb chops, and our petite daughter had the appetizer of shrimp and cherry tomatoes in a pastis sauce. We all loved our courses and would not have changed anything about them. The martini's were also excellent - a generous pour and prepared the way we'd asked. For dessert we shared a warm tarte tatin with vanilla ice cream - so good! The construction on 4th street right in front of the restaurant can make getting there a little challenging, but (so far, at least) there is plenty of street parking nearby as well as parking lots (best avoided on "event nights" where they charge a flat $30). We'll continue to make Fringale a favorite restaurant when we're looking for an excellent meal with French preparation.
Halibut and pork tenderloin were outstanding. We shared 4 desserts and all were top notch. Very happy with the wine. One member on our party had a traditional manhattan and was very satisfied. We'll be back.
Great, authentic food and service. No air conditioning.
We have been dining at Fringale since the mid-90's. It is our go to every time we visit San Francisco. Beautiful food and service. Reasonably priced. Don't miss this gem!
Nice atmosphere and good food.
Went there with a party of 8 - everyone was raving about their food. Everyone finished all on their plate.
Service was attentive and complete and value was good. It isn't inexpensive, but when value and service are this good, the price is - secondary.
The food here is very fresh, clean, and delicious. This is a very traditional French restaurant with excellent service and a nice selection of traditional bistro food. I had the lamb which was fantastic along with the frisée and blue cheese salad. My dining partner had the hanger steak with fries and a special beet salad both were very fresh with lots of flavor. A wonderful experience and I would certainly recommend it. The prices here are moderate to high so expect with wine and tip to drop around $100 a person.
Overpriced. Food is really low quality for what the restaurant charges and appears to be. Portions size was small. Duck was dry. Waitress wasn't nice, but borderline rude.
Amazing food and phenomenal service!!!
Homey with elegant, authentic French cuisine. We arrived earlier than our reservation and they graciously sat us anyway. The server handled several tables with aplomb. We had the charcuterie, sautéed calamari and spinach Gorgonzola ravioli. Dessert was an upside down apple tart. It was perfect!!
Second time we have eaten at Fringale. Anytime we are in San Francisco, Fringale will be high in our list of places to go.
I never miss an opportunity to dine at Fringale when I visit San Francisco. It is a real gem - the food is delicious and the service warm , welcoming and helpful. A great experience!
We had an excellent dinner at Fringale. For appetizers we tried the prawns in pastis with cherry tomatoes and a special salad with prosciutto, arugula, orange and shaved Parmesan. Both were excellent and we hope the special salad will be on the menu the next time we eat at Fringale. It is a perfect summer salad! For entrees, we tried the rack if lamb and the steak with red wine butter. Both were excellent. We can’t wait to go back to Fringale.
Always a favorite. Reliable, warm service, great wine, perfect portions.
Great find for us. We were visiting from out of town and someone suggested that you have to have the mussels. I was not disappointed. It was a very nice place.
Really great experience :-) thanks Fringale we will come back
It’s one of the best places to have a leisurely meal. Good food and ambiance and service.
Classic French dishes served by a classic French waitperson and very accommodating about substitutions due to food allergies!!! I’m looking forward to another visit to this well established SF gem!!!! The scalloped potatoes were the best I’ve ever had!!!!
It’s always a reliable place to have a decent meal there. Good food and good service in a nice ambiance.
Great dining experience. Calamari appetizer was delicious. The mussels, tender and sweet. Only disappointment was the noise level was way too so high.
I hadn’t been to Fringale in a few years only because I live out of state.
So when I knew I would be traveling to San Francisco I jumped at the chance to have dinner at the restaurant.
I wasn’t disappointed.
The food is fresh, delicious and creative.
I had one of the specials, Coq au vin and it was excellent, just so flavorful and perfect.
The salad was a butter, melt in your mouth, lettuce.
The service as always was attentive and not overbearing but just right.
Love this place, I will always go back when I am in town!
The ambiance, service, drinks, and food were all very good. The Paris 75 cocktail was especially delicious. Our server was good but he somehow forgot our salad course – which turned out to be fine, we had plenty of food without. The monterey calamari, pork tenderloin, and lamb chops were especially delicious. The asparagus soup was plentiful but bland. And the 2 seafood mains did not measure up to the meat. The seafood basquaise was so so and the sautéed seabass was very dry. They did graciously take the latter off our bill.
We would recommend this restaurant and would eat there again.
This place is so reliable, it is ALWAYS excellent. Fringale should be on every San Franciscan's Go To places for fine dining and (glory be!) a quiet dining room.
- Excellent execution of French classics and innovative twists on dishes.
- High quality ingredients
- helpful waitstaff
We’lol be back!
We had a wonderful dinner at Fringale. For appetizers we tried a special salad of arugula, prosciutto, orange and shaved parmesan. It was outstanding. For entrees, we tried the rack of lamb, and we thought was the best rack of lamb we have ever had. For dessert we tried the hazelnut cake and loved it. The service was professional but friendly. We can't wait to return.
Very warm welcoming. Outstanding lam. Red wine (Gigondas) was a good quality ration wine that matched well the lamb. it was recommended by the waiter :)
Authentic French bistro we have visited for years. Food is excellent, service was attentive and one could easily have a conversation. As close to dining in Paris as you can get - without getting on a plane! Highly recommended for consistent fine dining.
We always visit Fringale for dinner when we are in San Francisco - we have been there more than 10 times over the years. It is always excellent food that compares well to similar dishes we have had in France - we usually order the steak onglet and the duck confit. The bread that they serve is also high quality and a great texture. Their wine list is reasonable. The waitstaff are always courteous and prompt without being obtrusive. Couldn't give it a higher rating!
I have been going to Fringale on and off since the 1980s - never disappoints - excellent food, expertly prepared and served. Great deserts too!
I’m hard of hearing so it’s nice to have a gourmet place with such a quiet ambiance.
Not only would I recommend Fringale to a friend. Fringale is a friend. We go as often as possible. I always want to graze the menu, but I can't get myself away from the Rack of Lamb. Absolutely perfect, every time. Recently, our guest enjoyed the Sea Bass and my wife loved the Ribeye. We drank a Rhone that was not previously known to us, but had great character without a huge head. The service is always friendly. The staff remember and welcome us like part of the family. My only sadness is the retirement of the gifted baker who made Gateau Basque. It's complicated, and delicious. At least I have the memory. We will back soon. With all the variants in the gustatory landscape of San Francisco, it is heart warming to have a reliable base where familiarity is done with excellence.
wonderful French food. Always perfect everything. Make sure to order the mussels with fries
Five of us celebrate our birthdays as they come up during the year. Our Fringale tradition is sacrosanct. Superb food, a range of choices easily shared, assisted by many a fresh plate and charming service. This gem has been around a while and it has seasoned well. Enjoy!
We love this place and visit when we are in the city.
