The Holiday Inn Basingstoke Restaurant
Restaurant was closing for good the day after we visited- despite booking a table we didn’t find this out until we got there. Half of the food and drinks menu wasn’t available because of this.
We had r table cancelled at 4pm on the day of r booking as they told me the chief was going home early & he was only covering one as u r going to close down soon?
This restaurant is obviously going out of business very soon which really would have been nice to know at time of booking. Over half of menu not available so choosing food was a challenge, through lack of staff and who knows what they chucked us out at 9.30pm, hilarious on a Friday night!! Couldn’t have coffe as they’d turned the machine off😂😂, had to laugh really. Saving grace was lovely chap who served us, very apologetic and rightly so gave us 50% off as it was so shocking!! Don’t think it will be open much longer so avoid it!!
Gone downhill since last visit 18 months ago. Cocktails were apparently 2 for 1 but only got offered the extra one at the end of meal when seeing 2 listed on the bill. Large piece of bone found in rodeo chicken meal. Staff member did remove from bill & apologised. No atmosphere, over half of the restaurant was empty yet staff were turning tables away which seemed strange! Didn’t feel very welcome as seemed like staff wanted to get rid of customers to go home.
I’m afraid there was absolutely no atmosphere, staff looked bored
Had a lovely meal with my daughter and the staff were friendly.
The food & drinks at giraffe always used to be top notch. However, that was a number of years ago. The few times I’ve been there in the last 2 years I’ve come away feeling like I’ve been ripped off. I think giraffe has a lot of work to do when it comes to competing against other rivals on the high street restaurant scene. The host who greeted us when we arrived might to well to understand a friendly demeanour goes a long way in customer service.
Normally i would recommend it... but they had no chicken gyoza, sweet potato fries, vanilla ice cream, burger buns and some other things i cant remember. Also the heating was broken so we were sat there in our thick coats.
Food was good. Value was great with our nhs discount. Service could do with improvement. It was slow and the servers could do with putting a smile on and being a little more friendly.
Although the restaurant was nearly empty the food was only warm. Certain drinks were not available.Only the service was good but with fewer than 10 people in the restaurant they didn't have much to do.
Negatives: A lot of items were out of stock. The food was not all hot and the portions were on the smaller side.
Positives: The staff knew what was and was not available. Everyone was pleased with their choices.
Booked for 7.30 and we were shown straight to our table. Staff were polite and attentive, food was very varied with well-cooked dishes from across the world and we enjoyed it all - especially the halloumi fries. Puds were a bit Meh, but the “glass jars” which sounded interesting weren’t available that night. £70 with service, for 2 of us with soft drinks and 3 courses, so not bad value. All round pretty good, we’d definitely go again.
The veggie burger wasn’t great but my normal meat burger was great
Our party were very satisfied and enjoyed their meals. The food and drinks menus had a lot of choice and the service was quick and our waiter was cheerful.
We had Aidan as our waiter and he was absolutely fantastic. Couldn’t have been more helpful and he’s the most polite waiter we’ve ever had when visiting any restaurant. Five stars for Aidan!
Great food, different sort of menu, excellent. Let down by sticky table. Very noisy, even half full.
I booked a table for my partner and I for a meal pre theatre. Upon arrival we were informed that the kitchen was only half open due to technical problems. This meant that hardly any of the menu was available so we decided not to eat at the restaurant. I appreciate that technical problems happen but the complete lack of customer service was appalling a simple courteous phone call would have been appreciated but alas was not forthcoming even though they had my phone number and e mail address. In fact the staff couldn't have cared less and I will not be returning to Giraffe.
Our server was fantastic, she made us aware of all the offers available and accommodated us being early for our booking. The food was lovely and there was a great atmosphere. Nothing was any trouble.
Staff friendly. Food fantastic!! Already booked again for Mother’s Day in a couple of weeks.
Service was somewhat lacking!! We waited about 15 minutes once seated before our order was taken. We waited about 15 minutes for our drinks food was another 10minutes. Once we had eaten our plates were cleared then about 20mins later our waitress came and said she was finishing we asked her for another 2 drinks she said she would order them. 25 minutes later I went and found someone and asked about our drinks and was told they would sort them out. Finally after another 15 minutes our drinks arrived and we were told there would be no charge for them. No one asked if we would like dessert if you 10mins of trying to catch the attention of someone to get our bill!! The restaurant wasn't particularly busy Not impressed
Service was very slow and food very average. I found the Swindon restaurant to be a lot better.
It was very poor. Service was appalling. Only took a drink and a food order
I had been here before Christmas with a friend and really enjoyed it, so booked again.
It was very disappointing this time and I don't think I will return.
I'm sure the menu has been slimmed down, as the choice wasn't great. My partner had a burger which was overcooked, verging on burnt. My dish was disappointing too.
Cocktails were pre-mixed; don't bother with the mojitos which seemed to contain zero sugar and were so disgusting they were undrinkable and had to be sent back. Even the server admitted he would never order them.
The service was good for most of the evening, but then out waiter seemed to be assigned elsewhere and we were left to our own devices.
All in all just a disappointing experience and when there are so many different places to choose from in the area there's little point in going back.
Very disappointing experience. We visited for our daughter's birthday. The initial service was good, but the waiter then disappeared (to run the bar) and we were forgotten about by the waitresses. We had to ask for dessert, then it took ages to arrive. The hot brownies were delivered cold. Not impressed. Poor show Giraffe. We won't return.
We waited over half hour at our table before being given the menus. We then had to go and find a waitress after another 20 mins to ask if we could order. We then were served and finished our starters before our first drinks were brought over then for our second drinks it was quicker just to get up and go get them ourselves! It may as well be a self serve place! But at least the price is extortion so that’s good!
Service poor, food just warm and waited long time for drinks.
Service was poor 4 of us had nearly finished our meal by the time the 5th meal came out kept being told it will be there in 2 minutes. No apology for lateness of the meal it had obviously been forgotton not enough cutlery on table had to ask for it. Food was Ok but have had better though good variety on menu. Noise level was really high very difficult to hold a conversation. There are better places to eat in Basingstoke will stick to those in further
So disappointed having invited a family to join us to celebrate my 9 year old’s birthday. We chose Giraffe for its activities and understanding of kids. We had to ask for activities, the waiter was so so slow. Drinks took 20+ minutes to come and food was a huge wait...the kids pizzas were burnt and One of the adult meals sat on the hot plate in full view for over 20 minutes before it was served...by then it was inedible so he went without. All our food was tepid I’m temperature and I think by the end of the experience we dealt with 4 or 5 different waiters. Got a discount but would rather have had a good evening and was embarrassing having got our friends to travel to join us. Haven’t ever complained before but this was a really bad evening.
We visited on a Friday evening and the service was bad. Really slow and didn’t really seem interested. The cocktails we ordered were not full glasses and a couple we had to send back as they were not very nice. One of the people in the party ordered a chicken burger and the chicken was cold
Seemed to be short staffed and so with two large groups in, service was slow
Good good and service, but when it’s cold outside it is cold inside, there is no heating so you either have to sit there with a winter coat on or shiver.
Staff welcome poor. Not asked if we had reserved. Assumption was that we were a walk in and told to wait until a table was ready. Only 3 tables in use. Restaurant was very cold. Service was mediocre. Standard of dress of staff was poor. General experience poor. We will not be booking a table there again
Awful service, we could see our plates on the pass ready but the servers were chatting for 10 minutes before bringing them over. Ordered a double burger but they had given that to someone else and given me their single burger so had to wait longer for my correct burger. No guacamole but partner not told that when ordering her meal. When asked for guacamole they brought over what looked like a stepped on avacado. Very very cold in the restaurant didn't seem to have the heating on?! Apart from the that the food was actually very tasty.
I used to enjoy fairly frequent visits to Giraffe in Basingstoke, but my last visit has left me with a rather sour taste in my mouth. Our waiter was clueless about the menu and having ordered food and drinks at the same time, we had to remind the server about our drinks when our starters arrived. Cutlery was not forthcoming and we felt like we were being inconvenient for requesting this. Our mains were warm but far from hot and our second round of drinks never arrived. We were not informed of the Happy Hour ‘buy-one-get-one-free’ on cocktails by the waiter either, who should have known better.
Overall a really disappointing experience when the restaurant was only at around half full. I can now see why this was the case.
Won’t be returning.
The restaurant was freezing, to the point that we left our coats on. By the time we had finished our main meal one of the staff did put a blow heater near us but it was too late, we were too cold to want to stay for dessert. My family & I, to celebrate a birthday, had arrived at 6:30pm but they had already run out of cheesy garlic flatbread, and I found my burger bun to be quite dry.
We had to eat in our coats because there was no heating and it was freezing. The food stayed on the pass far too long and wasn’t hot enough. Our table took ages to get cleared and in fact my husband started to clear it before someone came over. Our drinks were forgotten twice and it wasn’t even that busy. My 9 year daughter chose this restaurant to celebrate her birthday and it was a huge disappointment.
We were seated quite quickly, but by the door, there were plenty of other tables, but as all the tables for 2 were by the door, we couldn't use another table? !
We decided on our meals, then to be told they didn't have any of the choices we selected. Why were we not told this before we were left to look at the menu? Also, why would a restaurant in a busy town eatery area not have basics, like fish and chips on a Saturday night ??
The waiter was unsure what was available and until he selected the item on the hand held device, he couldn't say what was or was not available. The food was delivered, and although we enjoyed the food the portion size of the side dishes, charged at around £4 a dish were disappointing.
So we had a cold, unimpressed evening and we both stated we would not be returning.
The service was ridiculously slow and with 4 hungry kids, this wasn’t appreciated.
I had booked a table of 6 but we had a last minute addition of a 2 year old so I tried to ring the restaurant to let hem know but no one ever answered. When my friend arrived she explained we were now a party of 7 and the waitress chastised her and said ‘you should have rung’ (my friend didn’t realise I had tried on several occasions so just apologised profusely and said the 2 year old could sit on someone’s lap so we wouldn’t take up any extra room).
We waited a good 20 mins for anyone to come over and then finally had to grab someone to take our order. Again we waited and waited and then our starters came but we still hadn’t received any drinks. By now it was well after 2pm (having arrived at 1.30) so the restaurant was quietening down so no excuse really.
Our main courses, including all the kids’ meals didn’t arrive till after 2.30, a full hour after being seated. We then ran out of time for the kids to have their dessert which was part of their ‘meal deal’ and asked for the bill.
In fairness our server knew we hadn’t had great service so took some of the kids meals off the bill which cheered us a little bit then we had to wait a further 10 mins for him to come over with the card machine which annoyed us all over again.
Overall it was a very disappointing experience and none of us will go back when there are so many other restaurants in Basingstoke to choose from.
Went to Basingstoke Giraffe using the 2 for 1 deal. The food selection is quite good but the service was a little slow. The restaurant temperature was very cold which took away some of the pleasure of the evening.
Good service,good food,good location.
Perhaps a little noisy at times, difficult to hold a normal level of conversation.
