The experience at Hal Yamashita’s always exceeds expectations! The staff and owners are accommodating and willing to be very flexible with customer requests. And the food!!!
This is a really elegant, beautiful Japanese restaurant where every dish is a work of art: delicate, complex flavors that delight and surprise you. Absolutely a destination restaurant;
The sushi is so fresh and delicious. Our server, Austin, was extremely helpful and knowledgeable in guiding us through the sake selections. Highly recommend this restaurant.
This was absolutely hands down the best sushi and the staff were incredible and very informative! Also very conscious of my celiac and modified my food to fit my allergy!
We had a party of 6 or more were told we when arrived that we had to do the Prix fixe at $88 a person. On their website it says this is a requirement for Friday and Saturday nights, but not for a Monday night. The hostess was very rude while communicating this and was unable to show us where this policy was stated. We eventually came to a compromise that half our group of 8 would do the prix fixe menu. The food was decent, but not up to same caliber of other high end Japanese restaurants we’ve been to. We saw another group of 6 come in right after us and leave once they heard of the prix fixe policy. The restaurant needs to improve their communication on their website of the current policies and train staff on how to communicate this to guests without being rude. Sadly, I do not think we would dine here again.
Nice to have an authentic high end Japanese restaurant that isn’t ridiculously expensive. We went to celebrate my wife’s birthday. Don’t get me wrong this is expensive but the value is outstanding given the quality of the food, service and atmosphere. I lived and worked in Japan so I really appreciate the high quality and authentic menu options they offer.
Hal Yamashita is the best sushi in Napa and among the best in Northern California. The meal is Akamatsu, a fixed 6 course menu. The Nigiri Sushi and the chef's specialty, grilled Black Cod, were exceptional.
That being said, there is room for improvement - but not in the kitchen.
We had dinner on a Saturday evening and the restaurant was "sold out". The restaurant was short staff for a full house. Dinner took over 2 hours. To their credit, the wait staff was very professional and friendly. Clearly, they need more "front of the house" help.
There were several parities of six and the noise level was so bad that my wife and I had difficulty having a conversation. The restaurant must add sound proofing on the high ceiling. In addition,
In spite if these problems, we will definitely return - but probably not on a Saturday night!
The food was not worth the price. There were bones in my slightly undercooked fish.
The nigiri pieces had too much wasabi, which overpowered the natural flavor of the fish. It took awhile for them to bring out some of the dishes as well. A customer should not have to wait 20 mins for a bowl of miso soup. The ice cream in the end tasted like generic store bought ice cream with close to no matcha flavor. Overall, it does not compare to other Japanese restaurants that charge the same price.
Hals is my FAVORITE sushi place in Napa. It is a MUST VISIT in my opinion.
Excellent food - flavorful and well prepared! And the service was impeccable - we truly enjoyed our time.
Really nice change of pace for downtown Napa. Clean, open and inviting environment, excellent quality of fresh fish and ingredients. Perfect for date night. Go see for yourself!
We tried set menu on a Saturday. Place is nicely decorated, upscale, waiters knowledgeable. Nigiri was ok, was expecting much better quality from an upscale restaurant. The highlight of the dinner was the black cod , very good. Overall 4 stars, 3 for sushi & 5 for cod.
Food was excellent to mediocre. Service was OK. A prix fixe meal with sake and tip for $400.00. Seems a little over the top!
Highly recommend the Omakase menu. All of the fish was beyond delicious. Attentive service.
A bit pricy but impeccably executed food. They might consider adding a bit of sound dampening.
Outstanding quality food and great surroundings. Noise level a bit high but service friendly and efficient. Knowledge of our server was excellent and the Japanese greeter lady very kind and efficient and fun.
This meal is the kind that you continue to talk about years later. The attentive service was matched by carefully curated food that demonstrated the authenticity and craft of the chef, hats off - we will be back!
A most outstanding special dinner to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary. Everything couldn’t have been more PERFECT. Each dish was meticulously prepared with outstanding presentation. Flavors were off the charts amazing… A MUST experience…..and if you are just a single, they have a very inviting Sushi bar we will be trying next!
Highest quality fish we’ve had in Northern California. Dishes prepared simplistically but tremendously flavorful and so fresh.
Dishware was stunning and appropriate for each dish
Best restaurant experience that I’ve had in Napa! Amazing sushi, sake, and service. Truly a special experience. Reminiscent of the sort of restaurant I would have found in Washington, DC, where I lived most recently before Napa. Highly recommend.
Price fix menu which is fine, but quality was just not there. Final dish was the cod which sizes were completely variable. There were 4 of us and each size was different. My wife’s was about 4 oz, mine was 2 oz? They soaked the fish in a cheese sauce? Nothing like the miso cod pictures on the website. You would figure the omakase menu would make the courses come out efficiently but there was horrible timing between courses that didn’t time with the wine pairing. I get that COVID has affected staff etc, but a set omakase and add on of sashimi should not be hard to make a good quality meal . Way overpriced for what you get. I have dined and multiple Nobu’s and matsuhishia’s and this was not even close. Had to get food after dinner since the quantity of food so small. Set menu plus sashimi and two wine pairings plus beers. $700 for 4 people
Clean and friendly staff. Great last minute dinner if need, nothing worth going back for.
A wonderful restaurant. Subtle, elegant flavors, an amazing list of sakes, great service. This is a gem!
We had the tasting menu- sushi was excellent, carpaccio overwhelmed by sesame oil and Parmesan cheese on miso black cod is unbalanced and unappealing. Service pleasant but not at appropriate professional level. Sat at counter and stared into brightly lit working kitchen. Had hoped for better.
We were not disappointed at Hal Yamashita. Everything was excellent and a welcome addition to the Napa foods scene.
My negative review was associated with we got there on a Sunday and we’re required to order their fixed price menu. Their website said that was only required Friday and Saturday. Food was good but as with any price fixed menu there are selections that don’t always work. Disappointing that wasn’t clear when we made reservation.
Awesome value. New place that will definitely become a Napa classic.
The fixed menu is a disaster!
The dinner lasted way too long, the chef instead of cooking was walking around the tables to socialize.
I did not understand what is the purpose of informing through opentable that it would be our anniversary in order not to receive any special treatment or a toast.
Absolutely too expensive for what it is.
I didn’t like the fact that they push you for the pre fixed menu.
We had the Akamatsu 6 course dinner. Although it cost $88 per person, it was an exceptional meal. The Hamachi carpaccio and the Black Cod were was the best we've ever had.
Fish quality was really great but feels like the restaurant may be in soft opening mode still. The menu was limited to mostly fish only with only a couple of hot dishes and no hot appetizers. Menu was also super confusing to navigate. The service was very slow and uncoordinated. The dishes we did have were good but serving sizes were very small. I wouldn't mind paying the price if menu was expanded and service was improved.
I normally don’t write negative reviews but after spending $$$ on a dinner that should taken 2 hours tops, I felt the need to. We were a foodie group who made reservations for a coursed meal. We arrived and restaurant wasn’t full probably due to COVID rules. However, the drinks too 40 minutes to arrive and was a same flight so not sure why it took that long to pour. We had to remind our server multiple times. No options for cooked fish so my friend ended eating edamame for two of her 5 courses. Portions so tiny for the amount we paid. No apologies from management. Strange experience with a expensive bill that left us hungry after meal. So surprising for Napa given you can’t really go wrong with any of the restaurants.
Fantastic!! Wonderful service and delicious sushi!
Wonderful staff and the food was great.
Hal Yamashita is a high-end Japanese restaurant in Napa Downtown. I reviewed their website and I had high expectation. I had an early dinner there on a Wednesday. The business was slow. The ambient was plain and too quiet. The waitress was not attentive even I was the only table. Some of the interesting items in the menu were not available. The sashimi quality was just average but over-priced. I will not visit this restaurant again.
Best sushi in Napa - hands down! Yuri is well informed on the wine and sake list. She is excellent, too.
I am so happy Hal Yamashita is open once again. He never disappoints. You can order practically anything and it will be guaranteed excellent in flavor, presentation, and value. See you again next week.
Amazing service, phenomenal meal. This is our new go to spot in Napa for sushi!
