Best restaurant experience that I’ve had in Napa! Amazing sushi, sake, and service. Truly a special experience. Reminiscent of the sort of restaurant I would have found in Washington, DC, where I lived most recently before Napa. Highly recommend.
Price fix menu which is fine, but quality was just not there. Final dish was the cod which sizes were completely variable. There were 4 of us and each size was different. My wife’s was about 4 oz, mine was 2 oz? They soaked the fish in a cheese sauce? Nothing like the miso cod pictures on the website. You would figure the omakase menu would make the courses come out efficiently but there was horrible timing between courses that didn’t time with the wine pairing. I get that COVID has affected staff etc, but a set omakase and add on of sashimi should not be hard to make a good quality meal . Way overpriced for what you get. I have dined and multiple Nobu’s and matsuhishia’s and this was not even close. Had to get food after dinner since the quantity of food so small. Set menu plus sashimi and two wine pairings plus beers. $700 for 4 people
Clean and friendly staff. Great last minute dinner if need, nothing worth going back for.
A wonderful restaurant. Subtle, elegant flavors, an amazing list of sakes, great service. This is a gem!
We had the tasting menu- sushi was excellent, carpaccio overwhelmed by sesame oil and Parmesan cheese on miso black cod is unbalanced and unappealing. Service pleasant but not at appropriate professional level. Sat at counter and stared into brightly lit working kitchen. Had hoped for better.
We were not disappointed at Hal Yamashita. Everything was excellent and a welcome addition to the Napa foods scene.
My negative review was associated with we got there on a Sunday and we’re required to order their fixed price menu. Their website said that was only required Friday and Saturday. Food was good but as with any price fixed menu there are selections that don’t always work. Disappointing that wasn’t clear when we made reservation.
Awesome value. New place that will definitely become a Napa classic.
The fixed menu is a disaster!
The dinner lasted way too long, the chef instead of cooking was walking around the tables to socialize.
I did not understand what is the purpose of informing through opentable that it would be our anniversary in order not to receive any special treatment or a toast.
Absolutely too expensive for what it is.
I didn’t like the fact that they push you for the pre fixed menu.
We had the Akamatsu 6 course dinner. Although it cost $88 per person, it was an exceptional meal. The Hamachi carpaccio and the Black Cod were was the best we've ever had.
Fish quality was really great but feels like the restaurant may be in soft opening mode still. The menu was limited to mostly fish only with only a couple of hot dishes and no hot appetizers. Menu was also super confusing to navigate. The service was very slow and uncoordinated. The dishes we did have were good but serving sizes were very small. I wouldn't mind paying the price if menu was expanded and service was improved.
I normally don’t write negative reviews but after spending $$$ on a dinner that should taken 2 hours tops, I felt the need to. We were a foodie group who made reservations for a coursed meal. We arrived and restaurant wasn’t full probably due to COVID rules. However, the drinks too 40 minutes to arrive and was a same flight so not sure why it took that long to pour. We had to remind our server multiple times. No options for cooked fish so my friend ended eating edamame for two of her 5 courses. Portions so tiny for the amount we paid. No apologies from management. Strange experience with a expensive bill that left us hungry after meal. So surprising for Napa given you can’t really go wrong with any of the restaurants.
Fantastic!! Wonderful service and delicious sushi!
Wonderful staff and the food was great.
Hal Yamashita is a high-end Japanese restaurant in Napa Downtown. I reviewed their website and I had high expectation. I had an early dinner there on a Wednesday. The business was slow. The ambient was plain and too quiet. The waitress was not attentive even I was the only table. Some of the interesting items in the menu were not available. The sashimi quality was just average but over-priced. I will not visit this restaurant again.
Best sushi in Napa - hands down! Yuri is well informed on the wine and sake list. She is excellent, too.
I am so happy Hal Yamashita is open once again. He never disappoints. You can order practically anything and it will be guaranteed excellent in flavor, presentation, and value. See you again next week.
Amazing service, phenomenal meal. This is our new go to spot in Napa for sushi!
Amazing each and every time. Friendly staff and fantastic seafood. So fresh and delicious.
They had just reopened for indoor dining about a week ago, after offering only takeout at the height of the pandemic so they were understandably short staffed but they still tried their best to attend to everyone. Food was excellent as usual. Sashimi was fresh, rolls were beautiful. All the food we ordered were aesthetically pleasing and tasted wonderful.
Such a shame this is the only HAL in the USA! Fresh fish with amazing
Restaurant not actually open
All of the dishes we tasted were delicious and executed with precision. Our server was very knowledgeable and kind. Overall excellent experience. I look forward to dining at their future location.
The manager Andrew was obnoxious and negated any positive attributes of the food. This is too expensive of a restaurant to be aggressively crappy to customers about the mask policy when Andrew and his personal PPE were sloppy and unsanitary. We did not deserve the large attitude from the diminutive Andrew. Save your $$ there are better options.
It was my birthday and it was beautiful and clean with friendly service at the start. I ordered the multi-course meal and was told they were out of the Japanese A5 wagyu upgrade. I enjoyed the early sushi courses. But the meal took too long and another table with a birthday celebration was too loud. I really liked the red rice beer but they ran out. The American wagyu beef - at hour 1.5 was some of the toughest meat I have eaten in a long time and the shitake soup was too salty. They apologized once for the slow service but the restaurant was not full and the price was high for the quality received. I tipped well but will not be back.
The service was great and the food was good, just not worth the price tag.
Great meal. My husband and I really enjoyed our dishes. We ordered the chef's special menu at $80 per person. Everything was delicious and the service was great. They are seating people apart from one another and made sure all staff were wearing masks.
Our waitress was great!
Yuri helped us perfect wines with delicious dishes. It was our 25 years anniversary and we could really appreciate and celebrate our history there together. Thank you very much for great service!
This was a first time for us. We are in the industry went to industry night on Monday BBC. The food is fantastic. We will recommend to our guest and friends. Thank you for a wonderful evening!
Ambiance lacking. Food and service decent.
Love this place. Truly inspired Japanese cuisine. I had the best King Crab tempura dish I've ever had. Chefs tempura was already the best and this was off the charts.
Not sure I felt the food was as good as some similar priced sushi restaurants but it definitely wasn't bad.
The service was impeccable and very professional! The food was scrumptious and served beautifully. We were celebrating birthday there and received the best service ever!
Wonderful but pricey. Will go again and recommend it to friends. Want to try one of the prix fix menus.
The food was beautifully presented, and it was absolutely delicious. You get what you pay for.....although it was a little pricey, it was well worth it.
Love the restaurant. Diyar is great! He takes care of his customers. He did a sake tasting to help us decide on the right sake for our sushi dishes. Loved the whole experience. We will be in Napa every other week and Hal Yamashita’s restaurant will be a must visit when back in Napa. Great place, best Japanse food!
This is not an inexpensive place to eat. Portions are small, beautifully presented, and amazing flavors. We sat at the sushi bar, was fun to watch them prepare the meal. Kitchen is impeccably clean. Highly recommended
