Hell of the North
It was amazing! We chose the feed me option which saved us from choosing. Every course was delicious, thoughtfully prepared, and with much precision. Presentation was laid back and homey. Staff were very friendly.
We did the three course feed me menu, and couldn’t even go for dessert as we were full.
Delightful choices made for us and thank you for looking after my dietary needs.
Will enjoy going back, again and again.
Exceptional food. Staff coped well with 1 member short. Good wine list.
Hell of the North is a Melbourne Institution that should be impossible to get a booking at without having to wait months. Strangely though, this is not the case. Open for 8-9 years now, they are consistently bloody good and well priced.
not clear about the set menu was of the opinion we were having al la carte. However lovey meal
Quite disappointing overall.
We felt that the whole lunch was a bit average for the price and the wait person (owner?) was a bit patronising and kept pushing us to order the set menu.
We also waited too long for him to take our drinks order which was strange as the restaurant was quite empty. He was very abrupt from the time we walked in and we wish we had gone elsewhere for the family birthday lunch.
Second visit and was not let down. Wonderful atmosphere, service and food. Do yourself a favour and take the time to go.
The food was sublime and the wine was exquisite.
The staff were amazing and we were more than happy.
Thank you once again, HotN team! We will most definitely be back for another round.
Service was friendly but very disorganized and each waiter/waitress kept doubling/tripling up with the same questions. Wrong plates were put down, plastic knives did not match finer dining experience. Food was cold/ not very flavoursome. Overpriced for what we received. Meals for the table next to us also did not arrive.
Great experience, great host, great food. Thouroughly enjoyable afternoon in an area we don’t normally frequent....
Over priced food that didn’t live up to this high cost. Poor service from the person who was paying bills at the end. Overall just a bad experience for an important occasion.
This is our go to restaurant whenever we have a special occasion. It's an intimate space with flawless service, excellent food and a great drinks list.
We almost always go the 'feed me' banquet and have never been disappointed.
I highly recommend Hell of the North
very good service
cheese a bit expensive
We had a very enjoyable dinner. We chose the 5 course chef’s selection menu and found it delightful.
There was a problem with one course that was noticed immediately after it was delivered and the staff handled it excellently, replacing it without question.
We will dine here again.
The service was really fantastic, all the staff were very friendly & the food was amazing. Thank you :)
It's always a great night out at Hell's. Awesome food and service. Never fails to impress. Love it.
Great night. Food was exceptional. Service was great
Great relaxed dining. The staff member was super friendly and attentive. Delicious food that would highly recommend
Great food , the staff are fantastic Attentive without being over bearing like some places. We were lucky to get a table in the smaller room which was really quiet and a bit more intimate. A must go .
Super delicious food, incredible wine list, perfect atmosphere, fun and knowledgeable staff. 11/10 🌟🌟
This was our second dining experience at Hell of the North.
Whilst the food was good, the service could have been better for the price paid. We had to constantly hunt down someone to order a drink and when we did our first drink arrived after the first course was served.
The feed me menu is definitely the way to go, but there are better valued restaurants in Melbourne.
Great food, great wines. Don't forget to ask for the hand-written wine list! Exceptional!
It took 1.5 hours to have all of our menu items to show up on our table. The order of items were not planned at all, all items came out one after another with huge gap (including our two mains), we spent 2 hours here, and we really just wanted to spend an hour since we are just two people.
Great food and service, just don't get the matching wines on the feed me option as you're paying per glass (i.e. $32 for a single glass).
A really enjoyable night! A great range of food came with the Feed Me menu. Though the portions sizes were a little small, the flavours were excellent and pair very nicely with the wines. Would definitely recommend!
Thanks for making our anniversary dinner so lovely!
Secluded off the main street and a great 'neighbourhood' gem with food and wine to match the atmosphere!
Lovely restaurant - delicious food & good values for money
Attentive staff, great wine and a very good night!
This is our third visit to hell of the north and it is always a wonderful night. This time we went with another couple and had the "feed me" five courses. Every single dish was divine!' The duck liver parfait to begin was a "food moment"
Great little restaurant with amazing staff and brilliant French food.
Well worth a visit.
If you want something a bit fancy without a huge price tag this is your place. I thought the food was fantastic value for money but the wine list can hit you hard in the pocket. Everyone was friendly, food was excellent although I thought it was a bit cold when I arrived but soon warmed up. Good for date night with your beloved.
Such an amazing restaurant. We absolutely love coming here. Highly recommend! Food is delicious and staff are fantastic
We were unfortunately a little disappointed after hearing such good reviews. We had the 5 course Feed Me Menu which is good value at $70 but the food was served on cold plates and as we were sitting near the door, the meals became cold very quickly. The flank steak was quite chewy and not tender as expected. Maybe we were just unlucky. Service was great so will give it another go in 6-12mths.
This was the third time I've been to Hell of the north. I was a little disappointed to be honest. The food was not as good as the previous visits. The meat was chewy and sinewy rather than the normal melt in your mouth. We were also rushed through our dessert so they could bring in the next sitting which was disappointing.
Food was amazing the service was exquisite. Great value for the price.
My partner and i eat out a great deal, and the service we got from Hell was stand out! I didn't get anyone's name, but particularly a gentleman and a woman with shortish dark hair, were both amazing! It was a birthday dinner and we had a wonderful time! Service was the best, food was great, cocktails were delightful and it was a perfect romantic night for us. Thankyou!
We held a team dinner in the private dining room and the experience was exceptional. Everyone loved the food, the staff are sunny and friendly, and Mark was wonderful in managing the back and forth on our booking.
Really enjoyed the ambience, food and having it all chosen out for us by the staff. Would definitely return for a “hot date night”
Second visit to Hell Of The North. This time was to introduce friends from out of town to it's awesome. They had a wonderful time and are still talking about the pork. For me the service from the wait staff was one of best restaurant experiences I've had. Appropriately attentive and accomodating. The setting and ambience of the venue was lovely and cosy. It was the perfect place to be on a cold winters night.
If you are European or want to relive the holiday feeling and looking for the warm French gastronomic hospitality and atmosphere, just walk past.
No bread, olives, pepper/salt, candle on the tables. No table cloth and just paper napkin. Cold inside, bring an extra layer. In and out within 2 hours.
Rough water pouring, pjew we kept dry cloths.
Entree chicken pate - very tasteful, double dip in sweet crumble - not so sure about the sweet element in a starter.
Onion soup - nice portion, where is the slice of bread?
Duck 3 ways in broth - how to consume the broth? 'just bring the plate to your mouth' re waitress.
Side dishes :cauliflower (small portion) and fries (average).
Dessert: creme brûlée: top layer not hard, disappointing.
The bill: $245 for 3 including 2 alcoholic consumptions.
Tip: send your staff on a working holiday to France and reap the rewards
B’day booking for my wife & had requested private dining. Was positioned next to apparent friends/acquaintances of waiter and continued banter between the two parties ruined any sense of occasion. Whenever waiter came across, conversations became loud and attention-seeking, language crass, and peppered with grotesque sexist remarks - cue chauvinistic laughter.
Outstanding food, waiter was knowledgeable & personable when attending to us but ruined the ambience of the evening. His lack of respect and disregard for the impact his interactions were having on those close by was totally unprofessional. We rarely treat ourselves to dinners such as this so it was extremely disappointing to have this experience.
