It’s a little hard to find if you’re not from Portland but it’s well worth it. Great oysters. Everything we had was tasty.
Very lovely ambience, with super fresh and delicious seafood. Portions are a little on the smaller side so it would be a bit expensive to eat a lot here, but everything tastes amazing!
Exceptional food and service.
Fresh fresh fresh and creative .
Boquerones were a great surprise.
Escabeche of mussels were too.
We drove up from Boston for the weekend. Our waiter Steven was just excellent, personable and very knowledgeable about advising local oysters and pairing our wines. The food was very fresh and of outstanding quality. A special mention goes to the red crab toast, tuna tartare and the boudin. Ambiance great as well, A+ overall.
Excellent food and drinks! Some of the best food we've had.
Everything we tried was excellent but the selection was a bit limited in that only three entrees were offered along with a selection of starters and raw bar selections. That said, the food was creative, the service impeccable and the oysters as fresh as you would ever hope to get.
Limited, but very creative menu. I thoroughly enjoyed the shellfish sausage, which tasted like it was made from scallops. The sauce the vegetables and the potatoes we’re also excellent, As was the Apple and goat cheese salad.
Superb restaurant. Incredible addition to Portland’s food scene.
Absolutely outstanding bistro. Best service I have experienced in quite a while. Being a party of two, we were seated at the bar which we actually prefer. The menu is limited, but everything we had was delicious. One of the best spots in Maine. Can’t wait to go back.
Wow, very impressed. Was not expecting anything special but we were pleasantly surprised. The dining room is open and comfortable and feels Covid Safe. Prompt friendly service by staff. The Oysters were fresh from the water and served at perfect temperature. The Chef’s Sourdough bread course is a must if you love great fresh baked bread. The Mixed green salad was a special blend of greens with just the right tough of nuttiness. Excellent. The Bluefish entree was perfectly cooked with a wonderful sauce that complimented this meaty fish. The Duck was off the charts. Crispy, delicious and served with a fantastic blend of veg. Nice by the glass wine selection to go with a solid wine list. We had no room for dessert but our table neighbors had nothing but good things to say. Good spot, don’t miss it.
Great oysters and wine selection. Johnny cakes topped with roe were incredible. Not a huge menu but I came for oysters. Making this a starting point for my Portland nights.
I went on Open Table looking for a reservation on a Saturday night with slim pickings available. Helm Oyster Bar and Bistro was all that came up for my time slot. I decided ‘what the hell I have no choice, let’s try something new’. What a pleasant surprise…. everything was superb! If you question why then I only gave 4 stars for food, it’s because I’m a foodie and I’m the Simon Cowell of judges. The appetizers were a tad saltier than I’d prefer. I’m brutally honest when it comes to my opinion of restaurants and bars as they are my joy in life. Anyway this place should be a chosen destination as opposed to a last resort. Hopefully business picks up because that bar looked awfully inviting and I’d like to see them open later so that I could utilize it. I hadn’t tried the oysters though the woman sitting next to me said they were spectacular.
Nice atmosphere. Great oysters and though menu is limited it is very well prepared.
Very good food, nicely presented with good interesting flavors/seasoning. Excellent wine list and by the glass selections. Server was friendly and took decent care of us but she wasn’t a pro, her style didn’t match the restaurant’s ambitions. And other little things like paper napkins and a bathroom in another part of the building shared with the cafe next door detracted from what could have been 5 stars. Not very busy at 7.30, seemed odd.
Good fresh contemporary seafood dishes and great service!
Some of the most sophisticated dishes in Portland. Rarely have we had food of this quality here
Very responsive to food allergy issues. Excellent wine selections
Another great time at Helm!
A bit over-rated. Pretty setting. Food lacks taste. Grossly overpriced for both portions and what you get. Second time here. Not trying again. Better and more reasonable places around town.
Had an outstanding experience at Helm. Food was unique and absolutely delicious. One of the best meals I’ve ever had.
Excellent service and amazing food - consistent 5 stars every time
Steven and Justin are excellent servers. They are very familiar with the menu and make great suggestions based on what the customer says they want.
This place is a gem. Both the food and service were beyond amazing. The Johnny cakes and the duck are some of the best things I have ever tasted. Everything we ordered from the raw bar menu was also excellent, notably the scallop crudo. Also, don’t miss the espresso martinis, truly one of the best. Highly highly recommended.
Have eaten in dozens of great Portland restaurants, but this was our first time at Helm. What a lovely place. Very interesting food and drinks. Delightful service and friendly vibe. We would have loved to sit at an outside table if it had been 10 degrees warmer - seems like a great outdoor location. We are part-time Portlanders - we come from another dining capitol (Brooklyn, NY) and love to discover new places to eat. We'll definitely be back. Highly recommend.
Great dinner. Wish they had waited a little longer to start the noisy process of cleaning up until we had at least been given the check. Otherwise very good.
Sat at bar for dinner. Service was excellent - attentive, courteous, and friendly. Oysters were excellent (tried all six varieties offered). Johnny Cakes with trout roe were also very good - great taste and presentation. Would definitely go there again.
Horrible. Location is not near anything def off the beaten path. Sat us late. Took forever to get our drinks, the waiter was extremely rude and arrogant especially when I asked him if they had any specials because WE COULD NOT BELIEVE THERE WERE ONLY 3 entrees offered on the menu. They call themselves an oyster bar but only had a small selection. My advice If you want EXCELLENT oysters visit the Rooftop bar at the Canopy by Hilton about 1/2 mile down the road and close to everything
The food and service was great. The only disappointment is that they serve dinner at the bar as well as tables. You cannot just sit at the bar and enjoy a cocktail before dinner.
My Fiancée is a Somm and I am a Chef in NY and this was our first time in Portland. We can assertively say from the Oysters to the Duck, everything was delicious. The cocktails were thoughtful and balanced (I had the Neon Moon). The esthetic of the dining room is beautiful. Our server (Justin B) was knowledgeable of the food, wine and cocktails. All around great experience. Cheers to the team!
Excellent raw bar and super delicious appetizers, particularly the Johnny cakes.
Cozy night dinner for 2 at the bar. Amazing oysters! Creative cocktails, great wine list and really interesting mains. Enjoyed a sazerac as well!
Limited menu, but outstanding food and raw bar items. I’ve now dined here four times and have had a great experience each time. The oysters, shrimp and scallop off the raw bar were fantastic. Excellent sauces for oysters and great selection of local oysters. The johnny cakes with caviar are to dye for, but also pricey. The mains are limited to three items and only one caught my attention which was a shellfish Boudin or sausage stuffed with seafood - interesting and tasty. I find the ambience very nice inside with great decor, little on the quiet side, but nice design. Would love to see 1-2 more mains on the menu. Plenty of small plates under appetizers and the tomato salad/burrata with amazing tomatoes was also a wonderful dish. It’s one of the more expensive restaurants in Portland, so bring your wallet.
Food was great, drinks were great, service was slow, but knowledgeable.
Would be back again for the raw bar.
Best meal in Portland
Entree menu limited to three choices. We chose the seafood sausage which was bland. Oyster appetizer was good. Desert was good. Service and ambiance were good.
I think I ordered half the menu here because I was so afraid of missing out on something good. I had the love point oyster; these were good, slightly more expensive than some of the other places in town. We ordered the mussel escabeche ( mussels that have been steamed, smoked then pickled) ; these were interesting but I prefer hot mussels to these but my friend who went with me absolutely loved them. We also ordered the crudo; my server suggested the freshest fish of the day which was definitely outstanding. It was served with cilantro and cherry tomatoes..these provided a pop of flavour against the tender fish and overall this dish was just divine. We also ordered the raw scallops which were fine..I think that may be a personal preference issue as I prefer my scallops cured. We had also ordered the Jonah crab; this was another massive hit. The bread was soft and slathered in delicious aoli, the crab was tender and the shisitso peppers complimented everything else. We ordered the boudin from the main. The seafood sausage itself was tender and light, unlike any sausage I had eaten before. This was served on a bed of sliced sauted onions and peppers as well as crispy potatoes. This was heartier dish and although it was good I think the standouts for me were from the raw bar; the crudo in particular.
This is the second time we've been and it was just as good as I remember. Everything we ordered was delicious and fresh. The staff is friendly and knowledgable. Can't wait to go back.
We were able to make a reservation a few days in advance to celebrate Vacation/birthdays. Every single item from the menu we had was delicious. We were thrilled to find quality oysters from locations in Maine that we had just visited.
Phenomenal food, service and great ambiance.
