Great history, excellent service. Have noticed the food quality has gone down. Ribeye steak was think and not tender at all. Thought price should have generated a better quality of meat.
Expertly prepared food, fast service.
Love this place. Always great food and great service. Will return soon,
We enjoyed a lovely appetizer, salad & dinner. If we head up to the city John’s is always one of our dinner stops, never disappoints!
There were 4 of us for dinner and everyone loved their meal. My husband and I had the Jumbo Prawns with a Dijonnaise sauce which was delicious and friends had the medallions of Beef that was excellent. Our waitress was most attentive. We would go back to this restaurant in a heartbeat.
Great Meal. Excellent Service. Old Time SF at it's best!
Service is bad! Food was even worse! Not worth it!
Probably the best dinning experience we had in SF all weekend! The food was very good, the wine was great and the service was exceptional. The restaurant atmosphere is very cool, has a film noir vibe. Great ambiance.
As usual, a wonderful place to celebrate an anniversary. Food is always good, service professional and the atmosphere old school Never change!
Nice selection of entrees including seafood and meats. Pleasant, old time decor. The food was very good and the prices were very reasonable.
I believe I would be considered a "regular" since I have both patronized John's Grill numerous times for years. That said, the experience last Sunday prior to our taking in the James Bond film "No Time to Die" was extra nice. Our server Jose was gracious and attentive. I had to start things off with a Belvedere Vodka Martini of course, and withheld instructing the bartender how to combine the ingredients, but you can guess what that would have sounded like. Our Caesar salad was fresh and tasty as one would expect. Wife had the filet mignon, and I the ribeye. Both excellent. As we were too full for desert, we called it a night upon finishing to get over to the theater. Enjoyed Booth 21 which was a special request that of course, was catered to. Thanks for a wonderful evening. Like James Bond, We shall Return.
Celebrate my wife’s birthday
This place was awesome. The menu is fantastic. The service is great. I would recommend this to anyone in the San Fran area.
Wonderful experience - highly recommend! Great food and service!
The food was disappointing but the service was good.
The fried scallops were fantastic! The lobster ravioli was also good.
This conic restaurant is excellent for dinner but I recommend Lunch. Try the Jack Lalane Salad. You won't be disappointed.
Escargot arrived cold and the Filet was ordered Medium Rare, but arrived almost Medium Well. Everything else was good including the waitperson’s service.
My lamb chops were the best ever! My BBF enjoyed his rib eye steak but said it was a tad too salty.
Our waiter was very accommodating when we asked to move to another table as the person behind me told his friends that he still had a headache and lingering cough and that he was tired of being quarantined. He should have stayed home!
Otherwise, it was another great dinner.
We’ll b back
The veges were wonderful yesterday and the steak was very good. The service is always on point. I would like to see more fresh options that are not steak... I had some mediocre lobster ravioli a few weeks ago and realized they were frozen as I saw the delivery truck unloading as I was eating.
Food and service exceptional. A must do dining experience
Great night at John’s Grill. Nostalgia added to the evening with stories and pictures, but our meals were first class. Salads were very good (beet salad extraordinary). Steak perfectly done and mushroom side was amongst the best I’ve ever had at a steakhouse. Don’t miss this San Francisco icon!
It was my father's 81st birthday. When we arrived he was greeted with Happy Birthday. He was so surprised. Our glasses stayed full, the mood was festive, the staff professional, food great, and a good time was had by all!
Great time as always! Chops and escargot were wonderful. My husband loved the clam chowder as well.
Excellent service, food and atmosphere. Old San Francisco charm.
We double-dated last night to celebrate two birthdays. We were incredibly excited to dine in and enjoy an OG San Francisco restaurant. We started with Cosmopolitans which were divine. Our entrees were scrumptious. I had the New York steak. It was thick and cooked to medium-rare perfection. The birthday flan was no ordinary flan. We also shared a slice of triple chocolate mousse which I enjoyed immensely along with fresh coffee. I'm a happy man.
The service was very good. The food was average. Not really worth the spend to be honest. My daughter had filet which was 46$ and she has had better steak for less. It was properly cooked however just not much flavour. The halibut was a bit overdone and mushroom sauce a bit heavy. Beef medallions again properly cooked but not flavourful. Wine and mixed drinks were good and the cheesecake was excellent.
Perfect, love the 1950s vibe, food was amazing!
Can't eat indoors without proof of covid vaccine. Service was very good. Dinner was awesome. My rib eye steak was fab and the 3-layered mousse was delicious and beautifully plated. I thought that considering the location, ambiance, & historical significance of the place, the dinner was well-priced. I've paid more for restaurants that weren't as nice nor was the food as good.
Excellent as usual. We noted it was our anniversary when reserving and they not only greeted us but gave a complimentary dessert and after dinner drinks. Have been coming here on most every trip to SF for over 30 years.
The service was good. It was pretty loud so conversation could be difficult. The ribeye was cut a little thin for my preference but cooked properly.
Wine is overpriced
I went to dinner at John's and had the prawn dijonnaise and it was excellent (but prepared different than I would have expected). The restaurant has a great menu and variety along with good prices.
The neighborhood might be a little scary after dark, but I definitely would return with no hesitation.
This is so tiny and bookish! Perfect for any SF lunch or dinner if you have an out of town guest or want to dine alone.
