Il Fornaio - Palo Alto

This was her last meal out before lock down for coronavirus. They were only a few other diners in the restaurant. The service was outstanding and very helpful, we kept a safe distance and ate a delicious meal.
Thank you Il Fornaio
This is one of my favorite places and I remember why!
The staff went out of their way to make us comfortable. We had a delightful experience, and the food was excellent. I would highly recommend it.
I love Il Fornaio, it is my go to favorite restaurant for special occasions. The food is consistently good, The ambiance is lovely and the staff is very friendly and courteous. Great service. Good food and they are very accommodating for special dietary needs. Thank you to the chef for adding prosciutto to my salad even though it was not on the menu. Very flexible chef. A very nice dining experience for us. Thank you
Great food and ambiance for a business lunch or dinner
Elegant place to have brunch with family, much nicer than a cafe and more formal. Great for celebrations. And brunch is not has hard on the budget as a full dinner! Love the eggs benedict...
I have had a meal (sometimes lunch sometimes dinner) at Il Fornaio once a month for at least 20 years. The food is always very good to excellent and the service has always been very good.
There was a problem on my visit on February 27. I walked in with ONE of my lunch companions and told the host we were two of the people on the Alexander reservation for 12:30. He apparently did not check the reservation and walked us to a table for two. I told him the reservation was for four, we ended up at a table for four and I made a point of telling him two more would be arriving. But he apparently did not mark us in since the next member of our party was seated at a separate table when he arrived a few minutes later.
The receptionist was outstanding!
Her miniskirt was very provocative.
Love this place, though it took about 10 minutes before the waiter greater me.
Food was not good. Bruschetta was not fresh .. tomatoes and basil were wilted... ravioli was not good either. Looks like there was no effort put to make the food look fresh at all.
This is a place to take your grandparents. It’s very old fashioned. The clientele was primarily 70+. Not hip or chic like the restaurants on the Avenue. Food was fair - nothing special. Staff was nice. Caesar salad was the highlight.
The Palo Alto location is a good spot. The restaurant needs updating for sure. The furniture and decor looks outdated. It is very noisy. the outdoor seating is nice. we went on valentines day and the service was slow and really not to the standard I have experienced in the past for Il Fornaio.
Overall, a mediocre experience. Based upon presentation and quality, I felt the food was over-priced. The service was relatively good, but slow. Time lags between visits to the table were excessive. The chairs were hard and became uncomfortable. I took my family out for a Valentine’s Day dinner and was left feeling disappointed by the quality of the experience. A spoon laden with dried chocolate something or other was deposited on the table, as was a dirty plate. I expected much more. I would not return.
The waiter was clueless. The place, used to be good.
A local favorite
Food has gone downhill over the past few years. Previously the salmon was great, last two times it was overcooked and dry
We always enjoy Il Fornaio. It was our anniversary, and we shared a wonderful heart-shaped flourless chocolate cake that was on the house. Our waiter, Al, was attentive but never overbearing and his recommendations were helpful.
Great food and great service. I'm never disappointed when I go there.
It was a great venue! It was very lively. We did have trouble hearing one another because of the noise. The team was awesome and the food was fabulous!
We had not visited this location before, so didn't know what to expect. What a great choice. The service was very good from time in to time out. What surprised us the most was the time from order until the delivery of food to our table. Almost like they knew what we wanted before we arrived. Selections all seemed very good, but a little limited. The wine list, like the food selections was limited, but certainly worked for the restaurant. The ambience was lively and allowed for normal conversation, without any worry of being disruptive to tables nearby. We would certainly make a second visit.
Horrible service. The wait staff took my friend's plate away while we were still eating the appetizer, in order to place the entree in front of her. Then she had to ask for utensils because they didn't give her new ones. I had to ask for water 15 minutes after sitting down -- I had already gotten my wine but my friend didn't have anything to drink. The waiter constantly looked unhappy and it was hard to get service at the table when we needed it. He rarely stopped by to check on us.
Lunch menu leaves a lot to be desired; very limited selections without any Piccata or Scaloppini or Parmigiana offerings. We've been to this restaurant a lot over the years, and the lunch menu has become greatly diminished. Service is good/okay. Ambiance became better after requesting some music be played over the speaker system. It's funny how restaurant management overlooks the nice touch a little Italian music can bring to the experience. We will not return for lunch, but may for dinner, although the dinner menu also looks diminished, again without any Piccata or Parmigiana offered. We came to the restaurant to celebrate a birthday, (which we made clear in making the reservation); nothing was done to acknowledge we were celebrating a birthday. This place has changed a lot, and has really lost that special appeal/feeling. Must be under new management or ownership.
Excellent service with fantastic food.
The food was very good and the ambiance was simple but very comfort. All dishes were very traditional and the taste was extremely nice.
Another fine trip to Il Fornaio. We go there monthly to eat the regional specials—this region is one of our favorites with its Austrian—tinged food. Our waiter was excellent; the atmosphere quiet for a Friday night; our food tasty except for the regional soup which was under salted, still bland after adding table salt, and had some bizarre flavors not to be found on the list of ingredients. Still, a pleasant evening.
My friend and I had an amazing lunch. Outstanding salads, attentive service, quiet table plus a beautiful setting. We really enjoyed our time there.
In the past, my family and I have had great meals at this restaurant; however that was not the case tonight. The branzino I had was very overcooked, to the point where I couldn’t eat it and the pizza we ordered was lackluster, void of flavor. The only highlight was the gnocchi. Overall, very mediocre food for the high price. Honestly after the experience tonight we probably won’t be back.
Had two meals there, a dinner and a Sunday brunch. Both were excellent.
It was SO amazing! Service was great as well.
This IL Fornaio location feels very dated. They are in need of an upgrade starting with the bathrooms.
Service could also use an improvement. The food is good, not amazing but fine and is the saving grace.
However because of the other factors, the overall experience could be better
Great service I made last minute reservations and was welcomed nicely
Waiter was fabulous!
Very good food, good servicer moderate noise level. Great place although somewhat on the expensive side. Good for a special occasion!
AVOID - spend your hard earned money elsewhere - I won’t go back ever. The food was quite good but that was completely overshadowed by the horrible service. Our waiter didn’t appear for almost ten minutes. Another five minutes to just ask for water. After 30 minutes, he took our drink order. After 45 minutes, our drinks came, we asked for water for the table for the THIRD time (he only brought out one glass each prior time), and we finally ordered food after asking for bread for the second time. When our food finally came out, we didn’t see him for another 30-40 minutes. Not to check to see if everything was okay or if anyone needed anything else. Not even to refill water glasses. About 2.5 hours for decent food but horrible service. I used to be a fan but no more.
