For 21 years my family and I have enjoyed and loved dinning at Indian Oven. It was really one of the best Indian Restaurants. Last Thursday had a work meeting and dined at Indian Oven and the food is frankly a major disappointment.
In our Saag Paneer there was paper the size of a business card, the lamb and sea bass was clearly old and not fresh.
The restaurant was empty but for us. Feel badly that the new owners look to be doing so poorly, but the food was barely edible. One of the most disappointing dining experiences I have ever had.
Wish the best for the owner to turn things around as it is very much needed

Ordered extra so could have yummy Indian dinner on Monday night too...it was even better cold!
I used to come there 1996-1999 when lived nearby in Noe Valley, my first time back 3/20 !!! They excel at really good basic Indian...no weird fancy DOSA or bizarre Amber.

This is a good take out place. Service terrible considering there were only 2 others in restaurant. Started playing bizarre wailing music after 10 minutes.
I went by there by mistake. It was ok.
They didn’t have any of the wines we ordered and the waiter was coming every time with a new bottle pretending it was the one we wanted. The food was good and we had a good time overall.
Used to be our favorite Indian spot in SF, not sure if it’s changed owners, but the service, ambience, and food were all below average.
The spicy dish’s were medium, the medium dishes were mild, and there was only 3 other tables at 7 pm on a weeknight.
Food has gone downhill from a few years ago.
I've been here several times, the first few were all for lunch and it was outstanding. But when I last went - for dinner - it was an absolute disaster. Things were undercooked, the celebrated rice pudding was inedible, and service was lackluster to say the least.
My review may be harsh, but it's upsetting to be disappointed so - especially as I was taking a friend there after singing praises for Indian Oven.
Food was delicious. Only one server so service was a bit slow. Overall it was a good experience. I will go back.
Sorry, the food just was not good at all.
I'd never been here so the Uber dropped me off and I thought the large crowd was where the restaurant was, but it turned out to be the Ramen spot next door. Indian Oven actually was dead empty which was a tell-tale sign.
I get in, am greeted then sat. I'm sitting for about 4 minutes or so when another pair come in and sit right next to me. The waiter then comes over with water and menus for them serves them water and attempts to walk off. I had to flag quickly just to ask him if I can actually have some water TOO as he hadn't offered anything.
Long story short I ordered food, Aloo matar, with rice, garlic naan and samosas to start. It just was not GREAT Indian food. It was bland and poorly spiced. I think it's hard to find Indian food, of all cuisines, that's poorly spiced. All of it felt and tasted like store bought "Indian" food from the freezer section. To top it off the service was really slow although the place was pretty empty. It just wasn't good and now I know why it was empty, meanwhile there was a crowd out the door at the adjacent restaurant.
I had not eaten at Indian Oven in more than a year and found that the food was not as good as it has been in the past. There are not many alternatives for lunch in the Lower Haight neighborhood so I gave it a try. We were the only ones in the restaurant. This restaurant used to serve very good food and we were hoping it had remained very good.
We made a reservation for dinner on Christmas Day. I think they may have been understaffed because it took a while to order our food and it took even longer for it to arrive (over 30 minutes). The staff apologized, but they should have planned ahead of time to compensate for potentially having minimal staff that day. The food was good when it finally arrived. They didn't ask for each of the items if we wanted the item mild or spicy, which would have better to be reminded that this was an option. They forgot one of the items ordered and still charged for it, but we were able to get it removed from the bill easily enough. I do recommend this restaurant because the food is so well done, but go on a regular, non-holiday day to get the best service.
Used to go about 10 years ago when every night was packed and it was so difficult to get a table. It was our number one favorite Indian restaurant- flavors that were so intense and simply delicious. Service was incredible too. Fast forward 10 or more years and the food was basic- could name a dozen Indian restaurants that are exceedingly better than Indian Oven. Not sure if there was a change in ownership but the food was average to lacking in terms of flavor. We were one of three tables and our waiter spent more time setting tables for people who weren’t there. Really disappointed.

I really like the food here! Especially the nan-bread, the rice and the dal! I like the chai as well but I wish it was a little less sweet
Great service, and nicely spiced Indian cuisine. One of the best Indian restaurants around.
My girlfriend and her family had frequented this restaurant years ago, so when we were back in the Bay Area, we decided to go back and check it out. The place has gone completely downhill. The food quality has suffered tremendously. We were served cold naan, and every dish we ordered was inedible because of the spices and preparation. The onions were soggy and not fresh, the tandoori was lackluster. And I haven't even gotten to the pile of garbage in the corner that we only noticed toward the end of the meal. If you have good memories of this place, keep them memories.
This is my favorite Indian restaurant in San Francisco and the food is consistently good. The service was a bit slower on this occasion than usual but the wait staff was friendly and it was a pleasant evening. They seem to be doing a lot more delivery orders than I'd seen the past so that may be affecting the speed in which food comes out now.
Disappointed. Service was earnest but lacking in the basics. Food was spiced to very spicy, regardless of instructions. Cleanliness was inconsistent in the eating area and not good in restrooms. Parking is really bad.
The place sucked ! The tandoori chicken for example lacked any flavor and was presented wet to the touch.
So last minute thought about lunch and made reservations for 1:30, we arrived early 1:15 or so - did not need it. It was only us at first, but doing a decent take away business.
Took a bit to get to order, menus were very dirty.
Another table came in and ordered after us. They got their lunch before we got our appetizer, that we watched the host (no cook) prepare for us.
Other table was almost done before we got our lunch. The food was very good - though the dish we ordered spicy wasn't.
Restaurant wasn't that clean and service had an air of "meh we don't care if you're here."
Our experience is on par with most of the other reviews. There are lots of Indian places and we'll move on to another.
Music was so loud we couldn't even talk, had to ask if they would be able to turn it down. Then we ordered our food and started with the samosa which came out cold. Told the waiter and he took them back and brought out new ones. They were almost burnt on the outside yet still cold inside. He told us since they serve "pre frozen" samosa's that is why their cold inside.
We decided to get up and leave and try Vietnamese instead.
This was the second time I've been to Indian Oven. Our family makes an annual trip from Sacramento to San Francisco. We all decided it was so good last year that we had to go again. Wel it was even better this year. We aren't too familiar with Indian food but all our choices this time we're excellent. I highly recommend the Murgh Makhani dish. Everyone at our table agreed it was the best of the best.

I haven't been to this restaurant in several years (it was previously my favorite Indian restaurant in SF) and this visit was very disappointing. The samosas were gummy and the prawns in the tandoori looked and tasted old. The aloo gobi was good as was the sag with lamb. The rice was ridiculous-----they just threw a few frozen peas on the rice at the last minute-----didn't even mix it in. We brought a friend for her first visit to this restaurant and we were actually embarrassed by the poor food. I hope they get their act together again.
Restaurant boasts lots of awards and I found the food quite satisfying, but not a destination location. Waiter did not ask about how spicy we wanted the food and it was flavorful but not very spicy hot. Didn't ask if we wanted any chutneys or raita, which after the fact we regretted not asking for.
This used to be our favorite Indian restaurant in SF, before we moved to Marin 10 years ago. The quality of the food has dropped significantly since we last ate here several years ago. It was disappointing to say the least. We have no interest in returning. On the plus side, the samosas are still very good, and the busboy was very friendly.
Decently prepared indian foods. Best are the breads which are made in a special fryer-oven.

The chicken was tough and dry. The sauces were watered down. This is the first time I ate Indian food that had no flavor whatsoever. The naan tasted like it was bought at Trader Joe's and heated up in the microwave. 10 years ago I lived near this restaurant and it would be jammed packed every night - the food was outstanding. Now it's gone by the wayside and I would never go back for such below average food.
Has been my favorite since 1999, but what happened? Where did the flavor go? Perhaps a bad night, but not up to my expected standard for Indian Oven.
Neighborhood Gem., a real find. been dining here for a few years on a regular basis. LOVE love the mix of tandoori dishes and other regional favourites. Staff are always friendly.
We've been to India Oven many times, and it was well worth the trip. Delicious food, great service. But this last dinner was a huge disappointment. Had to wait a full hour for anything to eat. And when our appetizers finally arrived, the dinner also arrived about 2 minutes later. They had TWO beers to offer; all others on the menu were n/a. Some pieces of chicken and lamb were inedible, no exaggerating.
This was NOT AT ALL the experience from previous visits. They were simply overwhelmed, and the kind waiter was very apologetic. I still will not risk it and go back. Even for their fantastic chai tea.
A great restaurant, and I can be picky about Indian. My first visit was for business (a party of 5); second visit was my wife and me. Both times, the food was amazing and we were made to feel very welcome.
One dish was ordered both nights - Baingan Bharta. It was smokey and flavored with ginger. Very enjoyable. It was also easy to modify a dish to your tastes.
P.S. They did a great deal of take-away. Another good sign of very good food.
I use to live in the neighborhood, but have moved but still return for great food. Great place for visitors. Great place to share dishes.
Beautiful little restaurant with great food. I've been coming here for 20 years. It's my fave Indian restaurant in the city.
Took my GF here. Several times they asked if we wanted wine and she said on glass for herself. They kept asking me. Also they would not listen her her. A bit too "traditional" if you ask me. Also tried to charge us for extra wine we didn't order. They are nice, and food is good, but would look elsewhere.
