Both the food and service was excellent. Our server and chef made our dining experience even more special because of our daughter’s 21st birthday celebration dinner. They accommodated our special requests and even gave her a surprise birthday dessert. Made for a very special night. We will definitely go there again.
I am not a seafood person so steak was my choice. The meat was cooked as ordered and brought to the table while still hot. Our servers were polite and attentive without being a nuisance. The price was fair and I felt like I got my money’s worth!
Upstairs for live jazz. The mussels are wonderful
Fascinating ambience. Food was good, but not excellent. I had a John’s steak, which was a little too chewy. The service was efficient, but a little too hasty. The restaurant is ok, but not top of the list of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco.
One of my favorite restaurants. The filet mignon is always excellent and I love the lobster ravioli. It's one of my go to places. And the staff are incredibly.
Last minute decision to go out—very nice place. We both had fish, each entree was enjoyable. Sea bass went well with the capers and mushrooms, and the redfish was also excellent. We were seated on the bar side, and it was quiet enough to be able to hear each other speaking. Server was attentive without hovering.
Good for friends and colleges, too noisy for couple. Serves a wonderful steak
This is classic San Francisco! John's Grill is such a fun place to dine. We eat here often and recommend it whenever asked for a suggestion of a dining spot in the Union Square area.
Fabulous steak and seafood. Service was great - very fast and super pleasant. Would definitely recommend - already have!
Over many years, I have never had a sub-par meal at John's Grill.
Great cocktails. Really good, friendly service, and a great, old atmosphere. Love John’s!
Very convenient location. Good food. especially stake. We enjoyed.
It is a historic place very popular with tourist conveniently located close to the very center of the city. It still has a feeling of the by gone era when Maltese Falcon was shot. Surprisingly it had decent food but also traditional style. I would recommend as a interesting place for visitors and locals.
I had a fly that continued to irritate my table during dinner. Food was OK. The place was very crowded. Has a great location near Union Square. So many great places to eat in San Francisco I don't know if I'd return on next trip.
The food was good, but overpriced for what you get. At those prices there should not be any charr on the filet mignon (it tasted like a dirty grill), and the ribeyes should be perfectly cooked to desired temps (both were undercooked). Also nothing was very well presented, just food on a plate.
We were in the second floor dining area to hear the “live jazz”, which turns out was just one guy playing a keyboard quietly with a sound machine “band-in-a-box”. That was disappointing and should be better advertised. The dining area was packed and noisy, don’t expect a romantic dinner.
Service was great! They definitely treat the customers right.
We can recommend the seafood crepes, the house zin, and the ice cream.
Excellent food and ambiance
We just dropped by as the restaurant was close to our hotel, and we had a great evening! Good food, great bar, excellent service!
We have been there several times and it never disappoints! The meat is outstanding and the seafood is extremely fresh. It is definitely not a place for a quiet, intimate.....anything but we love it. It’s consistently good and the waitstaff are friendly and accommodating.
First of all upon arrival the hostess was not friendly, offering no greeting, and seemed more focused on talking with someone else. We were seated upstairs and the table arrangement is horrible. Your table is two feet from other diners. The acoustics in the room is so bad you have to shout to carry on a conversation. The service is slow and when our entree’s arrived everything was cold. The meals were horrible. I will never return and would not recommend this establishment to anyone.
We were seated on time and on the second floor near the jazz performer which was nice. The lobster ravioli
was excellent due to the sharpness of the cheese and the heavy usage of salt. My Cioppino was lacking in flavor compared to the Cioppino I had last year. Not spicy, not hot, not salty, really nothing. Also no crab or fish was included which made the entree too small for the price. My wife’s lamb chops were cooked perfectly, tasty and moist.
Nice, cozy, warm atmosphere. Lamb chops - outstanding. Delicious martini. Pretty good combination.
Had an early dinner the other evening after a long day of meetings. I tremendously enjoyed the bouillabaisse as I was craving seafood.
Classic San Francisco!
Unfortunately, 27 years since the last time I visited John's Grill proved one thing: a lot can change in 27 years. The ambiance was great, we were seated quickly and our soups and salads came out quickly. As for our mains, we waited about an hour before our main dishes were served. Two tables with 6-8 people at each were served well before us, though we arrived first and put in our orders before they did. It seemed to me that our ticket was forgotten and then rushed through the kitchen. My porterhouse was half good...meaning specifically that about half of it tasted decent and the rest of it was gristly and flavorless. Potato was dry and veggies were still a little raw. People who had seafood dishes did remark that their mains were good.
I was expecting more out of John's Grill. I can speculate as to what has happened since my last visit 27 years ago, with increased costs for food and labor and everything else in an expensive city like San Francisco, but I won't. All I'll say is that if I had a second chance to schedule this 12 attendee business dinner, I would have gone somewhere else after the experience I had at John's Grill.
Very historic, top floor was the best, great steak
Excellent food and service! Great spot! Would definitely recommend.
A guarantee for a good meat! Open till late and esy to book trough open table
Food was mediocre at best. The tables were packed in and it was extremely crowded and noisy. They advertised having jazz - a lone guitarist who could not be heard due to the noise. Overpriced
Always a solid choice when in the Union Square area. Nice atmosphere without being stuffy, old school menu that is consistently good. A bit pricey - but everything in San Francisco is a bit pricey. Outstanding service on this visit, the wait staff here is usually as good as it gets, anywhere I travel.
Never lets me down!! Food was outstanding for me and my guests. Highly recommend this restaurant.
Wonderful place for the history and ambiance of a classic steakhouse. Food was great as expected. Place was busy, and we somehow snagged a tiny corner table under the stairway just inside the door that was a little more quiet than being in the main floor room.
We were attracted to the place because it also advertised nightly jazz music, however, we were not placed in the same room as the musician(s?) and could not hear the music as it was supposedly "piped" into all rooms. Next time I will ask for a table near the music, I guess.
Our waiter, Chris, was fantastic and took great care of us throughout the evening. The experience was a nice way to cap off a long weekend in the city.
Sat upstairs. It’s was HOT and very noisy. Felt like we were packed in like sardines. . Food was so so. Definitely had better meals during our trip. The only bright spot was the live jazz music. Would we go there again? Absolutely not! Not worth the money.
The dishes we had were very average. Not worth the cost.
Last night in California. Great meal at an historic restaurant. Limoncello was an unexpected surprise at the end of our meal.
Food was excellent! We got in earlier than our reservation and spent a wonderful time
Visited San Francisco for an anniversary getaway weekend. Wanted to go to a nice restaurant for dinner. John’s Grill was only a few blocks from the Marriott we were staying at. Loved the atmosphere and food. Will definitely go back.
Meats delicious, sides cold and or undercooked
Too loud and the beef wasn‘t quit good ...the coke smells chlorius. The best was the service.
