As good of an omokase as there is
Chef Russell's interpretation of traditional Japanese omakase was fantastic, and the comfort and ease with which she guides the intimate 8-seat counter at Kikko really makes for a great experience. We enjoyed the 7-course progression -- everything worked well as part of the theme, the flavors were great and creative, and there were some real stand-outs, especially in the nigiri courses and the agedashi tofu (handmade in-house!). If you are expecting a more traditional, sushi-heavy omakase, there are other places in Chicago that will probably fit the bill better, but I found Kikko to be a worthwhile experience. I knocked off one star in the Value category because I think for the price they could have included 1-2 more main courses...we didn't leave hungry but weren't super full either.
Absolutely astonishing! The flavors, attention to detail, and apparent thoughtfulness were AMAZING!!! Chef is so approachable and down to earth! One of the best dining experiences I have had! SIMPLY PHENOMENAL!!!
Incredible food, superb service, quiet ambiance with cool R&B/jazz playlist--and the chefs/staff rounded out the wonderful experience with knowledge and friendliness. Absolutely worthy of their Michelin star, and highly recommended.
Wow! This dinner is one of the most memorable dining experiences I have had. The counter space only holds 8 people and each of the 7 courses are prepared right in front of the guests by Chef Russell and her sous chef. The host made sure the guests had great conversation with each other and the chefs. Each course was excellent and the tofu dish lived up to the excellent reviews. This restaurant is highly recommended and worth a special trip to Chicago!
Great experience! The space is perfect for an intimate dinner at the chef's counter. The space and service set the tone for a wonderful meal that the food was built upon. Chef and her team have created a really special experience and meal. The food was both light and effortless but packed amazing flavor. Something really special!
A must-visit restaurant for any sushi lover. Several bites left me and my partner speechless—two of which I'd consider among the best bites of food I've ever had. Pair that with an exceptional drink menu and you have a meal you'll tell people about/recall often. Already planning a return trip.
Amazing experience! Will spread the word! Patrick and Moriya were very pleasant and most accommodating.
Although a little pricey with the drink pairing, our meal was amazing! It was such an intimate and unique experience. Would definitely consider going back for a special occasion.
This was a fantastic culinary experience. Everything was exactly what you would expect for a restaurant that just received their first M-star.
Best dinner I have ever had
Wonderful food and service. Chef was lovely and deserving of her Michelin Star!
one of the best michelin dinners ever. perfect portion sizes and wonderful pairings. magical :)
Just incredible. Might be the best sushi this side of the Pacific.
Inventive and delicious!
The food was over the top amazing, a true gastronomic experience of epic proportion. The chef Mariya took us in a culinary journey as we explored the relationship between texture, temperature, heat and taste. I totally get why she earned a Michelin
We celebrated my boyfriend's birthday at Kikko and had great time, very quite and cozy atmosphere. The food was amazing and outstanding, the service was one of the best you can get in Chicago, pairing drinks to the food was selected with care and was just perfect and all this made our evening one of the best date we ever had! thank you Kikko!
From the blues as the music to the food ingredients, Kikko's is is anything but traditional. It is, however, outstanding! Every part of it: the food (of course), the drink pairings, the service, the ambiance, the conversation! What wasn't amazing was spectacular
Unreal food from first bite to last. This was one of the best meals in a long time.
Probably the best dining experience we've had since visiting Chicago yearly for many years now. Very thoughtful chef. Kudos to the Michelin star as well :)
French Laundry. The Shaw Bidu. Kikko. In no particular order. Outstanding dining experiences.
Wonderful from start to finish!!
Best meal ever!
Portions a little small. I have been to a lot of coursed dinners and omakase and it seems a little light. Way too much gin cocktails with the food. Next time I’ll have the sake and wine pairing. Honestly thought pairings would be better and sake would be less main stream. But the taste was incredible: the basement is too cold. Blanket a nice touch but still chilly
I would go back. So don’t be too hard on anyone :)
And I will probably go more than 3 times
It was our birthdays which they said happy birthday but some kind of dessert or something would have been nice
Chef Russell and the team at Kikko were amazing in their preparation, presentation and conversation about each of the courses we ate: To say I left stimulated and satiated in the most epicurean of ways would be an understatement.
Minimalist perfection. Kikko takes high quality ingredients and unique spirits to give you that perfect bite and sip. The ambiance is hip yet relaxing, and the service is impeccable. Generally I sway towards a lot of moving parts with my tasting menu's and cocktails, but the appearance of simplicity at Kikko is on a whole new level. The cost is on the high end when compared to other Chicago tasting menus/pairings when you really break down the amount of food/beverage you actually receive, but luckily they have Kumiko upstairs to give you a little taste until the next time I can make it back to Kikko.
Lovely ambiance and service! Dishes were well thought out with great fresh seafood and flavors! The drinks were also inventive and tasty. Definitely recommend trying this omakase. However, there are not a lot of courses and they are small so you may be hungry at the end.
Kikko was fantastic. The ambiance and presentation of food and drinks is stellar. The music is excellent and the servers are very friendly. They personalize your experience and really care about your enjoyment.
The Kikko omakase is a culinary experience worth savoring. The Japanese[-themed food is creatively imagined and prepared; serve is style; and a true explosion of both bold and subtle flavors. Chef Mariya Russell is a wonder and wonderful, a real emerging star on the Chicago culinary scene.
The setting in the small, bar-seated omakase room is intimate, quiet and allows for personal interaction with Chef Russell, her sous chef and the beverage master. The service is understated, attentive and efficient. Overall well worth the investment in fine, flavor-adventure dining.
Great experience. The execution on the food was immaculate. The seating area was really cool. I would definitely recommend to anybody that is looking for unique presentation and unique flavors in their food
The space was very cold and dark. It doesn’t appear that the menu changes very often, which is unfortunate since it’s an omakase menu. I didn’t leave hungry though others have complained about that.
Chef Mariya's omakase was like an impressionist interpretation of Japanese cuisine. The analogy I can think of is Monet's Lily Pond. I cannot help being "wowed" by the added flavor and texture complexity to each of the courses.
Intimate. Conversational. Outstanding. A great experience.
Marvelous omakase. Cocktail pairings were delicate, interesting and on point. Will attempt to attend again
Wonderful experience - excellent food & pairings, truly exquisite service all night. Would highly recommend to anyone.
Elegant experience that is comfortable, delicious and even casually educational.
The food quality was excellent but I left the Omakase still hungry which for the price is not ok
She is killing it!
