Fantastic food and the staff were really great in helping us choose a good wine to match our tastes and order
The food is amazing especially the sashimi which has different sauce for each type of seafood. Suggest to include rice or noodle in the menu as some people would like carb for dinner.
best sushi we've had in years. everything beautifully presented.
Wonderful experience. The only disappointment was being a party of five situated by the front door directly opposite the reception counter as it was a cold night and many people were coming and going. We were blasted by very cold air frequently.
Expensive, Fly riddled and frozen crab will be my memory of the restaurant.
We went here to compare to another nearby Japanese. We were placed right next to the service bay and so were able to hear all conversations between the waitresses as well as with one of the chefs. In this time, we heard comments including:
“You can buy that sake for $40 at Costco” between wait staff
“Yeah just place it in the freezer” from a chef to a small delivery of crab.
We started off with sushi and sashimi, which, while above an average quality fish, were not worth the asking price. Some were tough, some were flavourless. Moreover, we had to contend with a counted half dozen small flies which wanted to join in on this course. Not the most appetising.
Bento boxes had some nice elements, like the crispy chickpeas and the edamame. Assuming the chefs were not after delivering crispy skin, the cod was well cooked. However, the miso soup was tepid and the singular large block of tofu inside the miso soup was unnecessarily bulky. Finally, why we needed the equivalent of 1.5 Lebanese cucumbers quartered and put on a plate within the bento box I’m still trying to understand. Apparently, the steak and foie gras bento box was done nicely however.
Overall, not an enjoyable experience.
The food was fantastic, but the service was dreadful - very slow, items not arriving, incorrect dishes etc
What a very special place to be with the ones you love.
The moment you enter the door your experience begins.
It is a treat for your eyes and senses.
Excellent food served with elan and professionalisation by Mark. 5 stars for him
Would really recommend it to people
The omakase menu was good, however wasabi was quite heavy handed, overpowering the fish on many occasions. The sushi chefs were not as experienced as other sushi restaurants in this price range I've been to in the past, and overall the experience did not feel very authentic. The expensive bill at the end felt like it was warranted by Kisumes premium location in the Melbourne CND, rather than the overall dining experience and food presented. I would say that there are many other sushi dining options in this price bracket and restaurant class that offer a better dining and food experience.
Exceptional food and service, nothing more to be said
An enjoyable place to eat. Quality and presentation of dishes was very good.
Staff were attentive, friendly and answered all our questions thoroughly. The times between courses was well timed and we were supplied with plenty of water.
Would certainly speak highly of our experience with all our friends.
Having heard such mixed reviews about Kisume l didn’t know what to expect. It was my Best Friends birthday so l wanted to ensure that wherever we dined it would be a memorable evening for the right reasons and it was! We absolutely loved the food and the service. The setting was lovely too. The only think l could fault was the price of the food, it was pricey, but the fact that they remembered to place “Happy Birthday” on the dessert and my best friend loved the evening in its entirety, the expense was well worth it!
Great atmosphere. Great food. Pretty good value for high end dining. They were quite accommodating as i changed my reservation from 3 to 4 people on a public holiday. However, the extra orders of food and drink took a while to arrive. Granted we kept ordering after the first round of orders, the drinks took a little too long to come for something as simple as a beer, it shouldn't take more than 5 mins.
That all being said, I'd definitely come back but might prefer to sit at the sushi counter next time with just 1 other person instead of a group.
impersonal and overpriced for very average food - immemorable
Fantastic - we would highly recommend one of the chef’s menus. Every course was outstanding- it is too hard to pick a favourite.
A bit of disappointing experience.
We sat a counter table and there was a staff training just next to us so it was annoying. And also sushi chefs’ were talking each other and noisy.
Food was okay with average level but not value for money.
Serving staff has no professional attitude.
We don’t recommend anyone for this restaurant.
Food: dumpling, miso soup with only one cold piece of tofu, sliced raw cucumber, one chuck of steak (uncut for two diners) ... make no mistake this is your fine Japanese dining not a street izakaya
Service: the front house should perhaps learn to appear less annoyed when the sub-par booking system by Kisume mistakenly put your guest in the ‘high chair’ downstairs facing the kitchen not the upstairs sushi bar. Sort out a table first before bringing your guest up and downstairs again and again.
Verdict: Kisume is a great restaurant when it comes to the sushi counter. The rest is hyped-up izakaya food.
Some of the best Japanese I have ever had. Excellent service , great wine list and a good space.
We have visited the restaurant many times, always satisfied, food is great, service is excellent.
Great variety in wines . We enjoy Japanese food and will continue to visit when we come to Melbourne.
We have been to Kisume twice. The first time we ate from the menu downstairs and really could not fault the food and the service in any way. This time went for a set menu at the sushi counter.
I felt rushed through the whole process as if the sooner we ate, the sooner our seats could be refilled. It wasnt as good but I also understand that its a busy time of the year.
Great food. Very helpful staff. It was wonderful to sit at the counter and watch the chefs prepare all the different dishes.
very helpful and friendly staff with just the right amount of attention to our needs . Great food really interesting twists on Japanese standards. Also really good wine list albeit a little expensive.
Hello - we have been to Kisume previously. On Wednesday we had an early sitting at 6pm. The food was very good - thank you. I had requested a quiet nook given my wife and I were dining with my mother who had come to visit from Adelaide. We were placed in a low ceiling area at the back of the ground floor. We were directly under a speaker. The music was just too loud and it the genre of music didn't seem congruent with a Japanese fusion theme. My mother was unable to hear most conversations and didn't enjoy the experience at all. This obviously impacted our experience. We just can't understand why music needs to be loud, or even necessary. With fine food comes fine conversation. Please give your clientele some credit that we don't need to be "entertained" beyond this? The service was mediocre. Within a 5 minute period we were brought 3 different servings of the pork dumplings which we didn't even order. They were delivered by 3 different people. It was pretty funny at the time but not really professional for a Flinders lane restaurant. We were disappointed as this was a "special" dinner with a visitor from interstate.
Look forward on authentic fish from japan
Steak is incorrectly as tenderloin, but it’s rib eye, could have been better
Much overpriced for the unimpressive food quality.
My friend and I had the short degustation. Each course was absolutely delicious and stunningly presented.
This is the second time we’ve been hear. First time was much better in our opinion. This time waitress kept missing items we ordered & looked rather frazzled. Food was ok but for the price you pay you expect more. Overall ok though.
Omakase was great ($88 menu) but was still hungry by the end of it. :-) the chef preparing for us was so nice and friendly
Besides some slow service moments, the food was excellent, staff were very accomodating and knowledgeable. Atmosphere was fantastic for a date night and I would definitely return for the delicious menu and quality restaurant ambience.
Excellent Japanese food especially with the sashimi dishes. In comparison the hot dishes seemed a bit average. We opted for the $88 pp degustation will probably do a la carte next time to pick the outstanding dishes. All in all worth trying and will be back again
We went for dinner on the first night of our honeymoon! The staff was very nice and accommodating and we very much so enjoyed sitting at the sushi bar for our sushi dinner
great experience sitting st bar watching the chefs at work
Excellent food choices. I'm vegan and there was no problem at all! Their wine list is extensive and tasty!
The food and service were good, but we wait so long from on course to the other. And the portion size is not what we expected. We were more full from drinking than food.
Spectacular food as usual. Ambiance is one of the best in Melbourne. Service was a little tardy in terms of water and drink refills - our table of five found ourselves asking rather than staff offering.
Outstanding dining experience. The service and ingredients were second to none. We will definitely be returning!
The food is decent however incredibly overpriced, there are much better and less pretentious options available for fine Japanese dining in Melbourne. Service is inconsistent and cold.
Amazing meal as always! Which is why I come back to kisumè any time I can...its just a shame about some of the staff being uneducated on Japanese cuisine. my partner asked if there was a particular dish on the menu and the staff member was quite rude in his response to my partner (who speaks Japanese) saying he has “no idea what that is” quite arrogantly suggesting my partner was wrong. I had to ask to get another staff member to assist us who understands Japanese. It was very uncomfortable seeing my partner spoken to in such a way
Absolute best dining experience with sensational food.
