Although my filet was not initially cooked to my preferred preparation, once the kitchen got it correct it was one of the best filets I have had. Our server and expeditor were great. We will definitely return.
Always enjoy having dinner at Le Central. The food is amazing and they make a great martini!
Dinner with special friends
Really disappointed. A classic French restaurant in SF—should be easy and fantastic. Instead, I got tasteless, limp “roast” chicken with salty Brussels sprouts. Cocktail was so weak I couldn’t even taste the alcohol. Frites were good, as was my simple bib lettuce salad. dessert was a “seasonal” I could have bought at any Safeway. Can’t recommend it with all the options in SF.
I am a native San Franciscan and going here on and off for over 40 years. I will preface that this dinner wa a pre fix New Year's dinner so all of their dishes where not on offer. But, having said that the quality of our meals was poor compared to the past. My husband and I both had the escargot and they were small and dried out, the sauce was tasty. I had the filet mignon and my husband had the cassoulet. The cassoulet was good (they have been making it so long with the same starter for years), but the duck confit was a little dry. My filet mignon was rather toothy as if they marinated it too long and it was salty. But the most disturbing thing was the mashed potatoes where served with a icecream scoop (this hasn't been done since the 50s) and tasted boxed. They were very dry and just plain institutional.
I think maybe this restaurant is better for lunch when maybe they get more patrons. I am afraid this is another dying San Francisco institution.
Wonderful New Years Eve Luncheon! Bubbles, Salad and great company! Cheers to the staff
Cassoulet was fabulous!
Very nice lunch with out of town guest. Always a favorite.
Le Central is classic San Francisco, and worth going just for that. However, the night we went it was seriously understaffed. It took 15 minutes to get menus and water, and the pattern continued the whole night. All of our steaks were overdone, and when we asked to send one back that was supposed to be rare but did not have any pink, the waiter tried to convince us it was cooked right. For a traditional SF meal it's a fun place to see, but if you want a fine dining experience try somewhere else.
Le Central is a San Francisco treasure. Great food. San Francisco ambiance. Wait staff who care. Always delicious food and a good time. Christmas time is special and not to be missed. It is always a pleasure to be at Le Central.
The food was absolutely delicious. This is a top-class restaurant. Expensive but absolutely worth it. It was somewhat noisy but that is a minor annoyance compared to all of the good points.
Perfect for our annual holiday dinner.
Fantastic restaurant after all these years. What a gem.
Always enjoy Le Central as a true French Bistro and Brasserie.
Restaurant looks and feels tired
Despite san Francisco difficulties- too many to mention, Le Central has made a come back. A native SF
bartender (Go Riordan) a waitress from France who speaks French- Mon Dieu (c'est Vrai) and a new chef has brought back memories of SF when people actually laughed and flirting was expected. My wife
who vows never to step foot in SF, says she will now reconsider to give Le Central a try . If we get lucky we might even hear some laughter in the air . Ca sera genial!
Was great 25 years ago and nothing has changed. How often can one say that about anything today, much less about a restaurant? Had short ribs bourgouinon and roast chicken. Both excellent., with house Gigondas. Perfect!
Won’t go back
Mediocre at best
Service was outstanding. Food was minimal. Still live the place. It was extra busy.
Pleasant atmosphere, especially early in the evening (6:30 seating). Service was very helpful but a bit slow as the restaurant filled. Cocktails excellent. Good place for the flavor of Paris just outside Chinatown.
I recommended it to a friend today. It's a really lovely restaurant. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed it. A friend who has been there many times took us and we were very appreciative. We will be back. For us it will be for a bit of a celebration, but we do a fair amount of celebrating.
Le Central never disappoints. It used to be my monthly go-to lunch spot when I worked in Union Square area. Now it’ serves as the special occasion location because the food is always en pointe, the waitstaff professional, and the ambience is warm. Le Central is one of the last hold outs of old SF dining spots.
Classic food served in a classic place. Love it!
The staff, chef, barman et all were friendly, infirmative and professional.
The food (my dinner companion had the cassoulet, I had the Filet) was excellently prepared, and came to us exactly as ordered.
Go eat here. You simply must!
Good scallops, good short ribs. NY steak a little tough. Nice salad. overall a decent meal. Service efficient and nice cozy ambience.
Service was fair. We had a terrible first impression as we walked in and stood by the maitre de station for several minutes before being acknowledged. The waiter walked by us. The bartender kept doing his own thing. Then the maitre de came out from the back and asked if we had a reservation to which I said yes, and added "I thought maybe I had my invisibility cloak on" and he said, come this way please and led us to our table. It's not a cheap place so you'd expect excellent food. The food was on par with the expensive price. Tables are very close so you don't get any private conversation for sure. You can get to know your neighbors however. I won't be going back there.
Steak au poivre was perfect!!! Cooked perfectly and sauce was great!
Delicious French food, from salads & soups to desserts. Everything was great. Service excellent.
We went for the special fixed price menu celebrating the 45 th anniversary. A great bottle of wine suggested by our waiter was the perfect accompaniment to our perfect meal. Two of us ordered the filet. It was, by far, among the best I’ve ever had.
As a native, I know this restaurant has its share of competition, and it’s location might seem primed for the tourist trade. It does, however, more than hold its own and I find it worth the trip from within or without the downtown neighborhood for this small charming place.
One of the five meals was worthless. The scallops fours halves of scallops of small day boat scallops. Inadequate portion for a 30 dollar meal. Never will I come here again. Charged 5$ to split a salad..at the waitress’s suggestion. Did not notify us there was a charge.
Enjoyed the food very much! We’ll be back!
Lovely dinner with friends to share stories of travel in France. Food was excellent - everyone enjoyed their entree. The desserts were a bit Americanized, chocolate cake and and a fruit crisp, but yummy. It was a bit challenging to hear each other in a 4 way conversation due to loud talkers at the table beside us. I will ask for a different place next time. Excellent service!
If you're hungry and passing this restaurant then pop in. I didn't think it was anything more than ordinary. I did think about having the creme brulee but I just want regular, ordinary creme brulee so I don't know why all these extra spices will make a difference so I didn't bother trying it - perhaps I should have tried it!
The 25th Anniversary three course prix fixe menu was a good option at $45.00. I wish they would make it a permanent feature.
Was in SFO from NY for Dreamforce. Wanted a lovely dinner with my team that was off the beaten path. This was perfect. I adore a classic french bistro and Le Central did not disappoint. Food was delicious and "very French." Our waitress was lovely. They did not rush us at all (table of 9). I felt that prices were quite fair. Will definitely be coming back here whenever I am in San Fran for other visits. Atmosphere was perfect as well. My team was extremely happy with it as well.
Scott was a great waiter! Our host didn’t have the wine we ordered so he gave us a wine he recommended for the same price
Haven’t been here in years and a very pleasant experience. Next time if I am traveling by myself eating at the Bar would be a great experience as well. Thank you
Went to Le Central for a business meeting. The menu was quite varied, with a good representation of different French dishes.
At the table we had the Cassoulet, the Tuite Fumée, Duck Rillette. All were spectacular.
Excellent food. Very good service, friendly staff, reasonable prices.
Already recommended to a friend who is going. Very attentive service, without being too much. Food service was well-paced. Enjoyed their cassoulet and other dishes we had.
Easy to have conversations there--nice quiet buzz, and good sound baffles. Nice old-style bistro in SF--one of the few left.
