We went on Saturday night to Martingale Wharf. We unfortunately were seated outside which was terrible because it was 42 degrees and there were no heaters. I saw it was going to be cold but, once I made the reservation I had to put my card down to hold the reservation and if we cancelled we would have been charged $25 pp. When we got there, the hostess was nice about it, but we soon realized that being on the water was extra windy and cold and our food will get cold quickly. I went back in to speak with the hostess, and she was definitely in overload. She was nice, calm, professional, and tried to accommodate us as best as possible. Unfortunately, there were no seats inside so we ate quickly, paid the bill and left. The food was very good (would have definitely been better if we weren't rushed), and the service was great as well. My only advise in these COVID times is to get some heaters for that back area.

It was a cold evening in October and I made a reservation here on open table. We were not told ahead of time that we would be mandated to eat outside. I especially thought with a reservation the option to eat outside would be given first but no we were forced outside and I was not properly dressed. There are NO heaters outside. A restaurant by the water which adds wind has no heaters. Also this was a birthday dinner. They didn’t manage to say happy birthday once even though it was noted on the reservation that I clicked birthday. There are two tables with a fire pit. I asked when we first walked in to eat inside the answer was no your table is outside. As we were dressed up for a birthday celebration, I was in a dress. Then I asked well can we be seated by the fire pit and I was told no you need to request that ahead of time. So note to everyone on open table — you need to request this. Maybe this should be added to the description on open table. So there was one table open by a fire pit when we got to our table outside. We first asked the hostess if we could have that table and were told no. Then 30 mins later prior to our food coming and I’m freezing I asked our waitress could we please have a table inside or by the empty fire pit she tells me no saying there’s a reservation for the fire pit. OUR ENTIRE MEAL THAT TABLE BY THE FIRE PIT STAYED EMPTY. I couldn’t believe what terrible customer service we received. Especially at a birthday dinner on vacation. We ate as fast as we could and got out of this place. I do not recommend. INVEST IN HEATERS. I’ve eaten at a lot places since covid and they all have heaters if the seating is outside. I’ve never been treated so rudely and dismissively by a restaurant. I will never go back.

When I reserved my table for Martingale Wharf, I selected outdoor seating because the website mentioned that heaters/blankets would be provided. When we showed up, there were only a few outdoor seats near a firepit which were all booked. All other outdoor seating had no heating mechanisms and it was 50 degrees outside. Luckily we got the last available seat inside but it was tucked behind the bar which felt awkward. The restaurant lacked ambiance and our waiter lacked personality. For $30-50 per entrée, I expected more.

We had made a reservation 2 weeks in advance and requested a water view table we were seated in a far back corner with little view , we were moved to the lounge with a better view but not what we requested

We got engaged just before coming and then had a wonderful dinner! Everyone was so sweet and gave us time and space. It was very lovely.

Delicious food
Good service, but do not understand the contactless service. What's it matter if the server places on my table or the side service one? It's been touched! And, contact is well below 15 minutes.

Could not have been better.
Beautiful night (weather wise)
Waiter Jack perfect, just great.
Food spot on, drinks great.
Had reservations and were seated right away..
Had been there once before with friends also great.
This was a great romantic dinner with the hubby, just awesome.

Celebrated a wedding/birthday with another couple inside. We were very comfortable with social distancing and the way the food and drinks were served. Just like dining on the patio without the cold. Always a delightful experience made even nicer by our waiter Ray.

I've been to your restaurant many times, but this was my first disappointing visit based on the ambiance and new service measures in place. Let me start by saying that there were four of us and the food was fantastic! That includes the dessert, which was wonderful. We understood that using the side table was to keep your staff safe. What I thought was unacceptable was having to log onto my phone to read a menu. Two of my friends are elderly, which left my husband to read the menu off to our friends...my phone wouldn't connect. A simple paper menu that could be recycled or a laminated menu that could be wiped down would have made the meal service feel civil. With proper safety measures in place there's no reason a menu could not be given to patrons. We had to wait quite some time to receive silverware after our salads were placed on the side table as the server didn't realize we were without silverware. I had to send my glass of wine back because after a few sips I realized someone's lipstick was all over the rim of the glass and I don't wear lipstick. My hope is that the glass was sanitized for my safety. I truly enjoy your restaurant and hope that you can make a few changes to make dining a bit more enjoyable. Thank you.

Service and view were outstanding. Cheeseboard and appetizer were very good. Our Med Rare burger was very very over cooked, but were were hungry and didn't want wait for it to be redone. Creme brulee was excellent.

Food was good. Menu is great. Service was good as well, but some of their COVID precautions negatively impact the experience. It kinda feels like you might as well have takeout, as the servers can only partially serve you.

Overall I would not come back, I know with covid restriction it would not be a usual dining experience but it was a let down. The waiter was excellent and very attentive, that was the only good part of dinner.

I had the ahi tuna salad...tuna was so stringy and tough I could not cut through it....makes no sense to me that the servers are required to set and remove from a side table not on our table...everyone is still touching the same stuff ....and they charge $25 to light the fire pit

I have always enjoyed Martingale Wharf. This time the “no contact service” was a bit odd. If any of the other restaurants that we went to while in Portsmouth did this I would understand, but no where else was the food and drinks placed on a small table next to our table for us to service ourselves. We came from CT and during this COVID time have we never been serviced this way. At a certain level I understand but on the other hand it was a bit much.

I came here for brunch with my two friends. We had a wonderful waitress and a beautiful spot. I was so incredibly disappointed by my Bloody Mary and Salmon BLT. Neither had any taste, the Bloody Mary mix tasted like watered down tomato juice, and the sandwich was lukewarm with soggy bread and no flavor...really disappointing. Oysters were delicious.

This restaurant was above and beyond our expectations. The location was absolutely prime and the service was impeccable. They went out of their way to make sure my husband got a cake for his birthday. The food was divine. I can’t say enough about every bite we had there. I’m drooling writing about it. I cannot wait to get back to the Martingale Wharf restaurant!!!

Beautiful view, great service and upscale, trendy surroundings. Food was terrific although portion size of the salmon could be a little larger. Ceviche and clam chowder were great!

Calamari was over fried and stuck together. Jambalaya was kitchen sink version, included salmon. Desert was good, passion fruit cheesecake. Deck seating was wonderful. Service was fine.

Reserved outside and host tried to seat us inside. Then said she only had firepit table even though the majority of outside was vacant. We ageed because We dont want to eat inside yet. She then said it would be $25 to light the firepit. Five minutes Later rude waitress came over and aggressively asked if we just sat here without hostess. Waitress was good but my back hurt after eating full dinner at unlit firepit. Won’t be back and just moved here so was looking for best choice.

We were visiting and looking for a seafood restaurant by the water. This place was a pleasant surprise! The atmosphere was great, the food outstanding, and the staff top notch. It’s a bit pricey but the quality and ambiance makes it worth it.

Food and view were fabulous! Server was good and answered any questions, they were mindful of my gluten allergy. The seafood scampi was good but should be a little bigger of a portion for 33$.
Statler Chicken was very very good as well!

Food and drink were delicious! Ambiance was great! Only negative was the food and drinks being left on a table next to us and we had to basically serve ourselves. We’ve been to restaurants during Covid and haven’t had to serve ourselves. The staff wears masks at other restaurants and thats sufficient. You’re next to us taking our order, wearing a mask, so handing us our food and drinks is reasonable. Placing it on a table nearby is a little ridiculous if you’re already standing in front of us. Also, if you’re going to share your pen with us the sign our bill there is no reason our food can’t at least be put in front of us. us. Sharing your pen negates a no contact rule. The food was great though, the staff was great, just the food serving plan is a little unnecessary and ruins some of the experience of going out to eat.

Salmon BLT had a weird flavor I cannot put my finger on.

Service was lacking not due covid contact protocols but because our waitress was no where to be found and did not check back on us timely, hence not being able say the Salmon BLT tasted weird. I just ate all the other bits.

French fries are great!!!

Regrettably, I went against my previous vow to not eat here again. We thought that trying the beautiful outside deck at MW on a quiet weeknight would be a good idea because hey - the place wasn't very busy. The unfortunate facts are that the service was very slow (the server was friendly though) and the food was not even close to the quality that their price points advertised.
I truly, honestly felt a little offended when we ordered the tuna tartare and the dish is served with store-bought off-brand Ritz crackers which were so stale in texture and taste that my mouth became dry just now typing about it. The second complaint about the food has to do with the market price for a lobster roll being 36 dollars, yet this version of a lobster roll being dry with an old and flaky bun which pathetically held an inexcusably small portion of lobster that again - for the outrageous price point of this sandwich and its failure to deliver in any way - offended me.
I guess the chief complaint I have is that in general, the agreement that a restaurant makes is to deliver a product in exchange for my money and being a pleasant guest. And I'm telling you that I feel like I was the only one holding up my end of the bargain at Martingale Wharf.
