Mathilde French Bistro
Really wonderful bistro fare, I'd take anyone there!
We happened to go on a night when people were staying in, because of the coronavirus, so we were one of only two tables in the whole restaurant. So, the service was obviously impeccable. But I think our server would have been equally as helpful if the place was full.
We used to go to La Charme, same location and owner, so we knew it was authentic, and it did not disappoint.
Mathilde continues to be one of our favorite dinner destinations in SOMA. We can hardly wait for Gypsy Jazz Thursdays to restart.
classical French bistro with excellent food and service, reasonable prices (for SF).
Great. A classic.
Great food and incredible service. A little slice of France right in San Francisco, if you love French bistros and wish we had one here, we do!
I have been enjoying this restaurant for nearly 20 years and it’s my go to spot when in San Francisco. The food is great and the staff quite friendly with prices that defy reality in this city. This time I had rack of lamb and it was perfectly prepared.
Great service. Fun French feel. Incredible food - everything we had! Our group of five loved everything about our first experience at this restaurant. We'll be back!
All the traditional French favorites are wonderfully prepared. If you are looking for cutting edge dishes, this is not the place.
absolutely delicious dishes. I had the beef bourgononne ravioli which was excellent. Duck confit and Coq au Vin also excellent. Great goat cheese salad. Service very friendly and accommodating to our schedule.
I had the boeuf bourginon pot pie and while very flavorful the meat was just slightly tough. I loved everything else about the meal and the service was really exceptional.
Charming space and wonderful, very authentically French, food. I loved the fact that we weren't rushed and that our server didn't bat an eye when we asked for coffee to be brought after dessert instead of with. It was also very classy that our wines by the glass were poured at the table for us to taste and approve. Highly recommend.
Nice food at the nice location in SF. The food, ambivalence, and service was nice, especially given the price. If there was an instruction for parking, that would have been better.
Mathilde is a lovely bistro. The service is courteous and precise. All servers seem to communicate and our experience was quite seamless. Attention to detail was a plus. My wine glass was never empty, always someone to refill it. I could get used to this! Food was tasty, generous portions. I was very happy with my duck confit, crispy on the outside, meat melting and delicious on the inside. My husband's filet mignon arrived overcooked but it wasn't ruined. He decided to eat it like that. When we told the server at the end of the evening he apologized profusely and arrived with a complimentary after dinner drink which we loved. Nice touch. Desserts were nice and coffee is good quality. We'll be back!
Great food, not too expensive, sat outside and the heaters were very effective!
We're again very pleased with our dinner at Mathilde French Bistro. The food, service and ambiance were all excellent. It will definitely remain in the rotation of superb restaurants we patronize when we visit San Francisco.
Authentic French cuisine, served by French staff. This restaurant not only serves delicious food, but it is also insanely charming.
Some of us ordered the specials which sounded enticing (boeuf bourguignon pot pie, Seared ribeye with marrow). The steak was delicious but I was disappointed with the pot pie. The meat was tender but the sauce was quite thin and not as flavorful as a Bourguignon should be. We had the charcuterie for appetizers for the table and it was good - lots of different pates and terrines. The service was good and the wine list comprehensive. Alas, we made the mistake of not asking the price of the sepcials and were stunned at the final bill (around $150 per couple with $38 for potpie and $55 for the steak). I felt it was overpriced for the quality of food.
It was restaurant week in San Francisco. They were one of the participating restaurants. It’s was a delicious three course meal. The appetizer was a Beet salad, it was divine. One of the best I’ve had. The entree was a rib-bye steak seasoned and cooked to perfection. Desert was a flourless chocolate cake, a must have. I will definitely go back to this restaurant.
Mathilde French Bistro is a delightful spot in the SOMA area with an authentic air and wonderful food served in a fine dining atmosphere, albeit with cloth napkins but not tablecloths, which is still fine. I came here twice during SF Restaurant Week with different friends and we all had a very good experience.
Went here during SF restaurant week. Wonderful food but seating was a little too close for comfort. Waitstaff was very good.
Excellent food, and service. I have the same waitress each visit I love.
Even in the back garden room, the noise level was excessive. Please add some soft surfaces to mitigate it.
Mathilde was amazing! Superb food, helpful waiters, very reasonably priced for a nice restaurant (especially in SF).
Small spot I hadn't heard of before, despite Mathilde being around for 25 years. Hidden gem for sure!
They had a great little back garden area with cute trees and lights. Patio was tented / heated so you get the outdoor ambiance without the cold / rain / street noise
Friendly staff and delicious dinner for the SF restaurant week.
Awesome prizes fixe
Consistently great food and wine choice. Would highly recommend .
Great French Bistro. Food and service is excellent.
Fantastic French food at a reasonable price.
Real great food very authentic, also loved the wine choices. Great space and service. The food was good value for money.
Mathilde is such a gem in the neighborhood. Great ambience, excellent French cuisine with top notch services, we could not ask for better dining experience. I highly recommend the restaurant.
The location is kind of dark and dingy. Be warned if you have someone in a wheelchair or who is mobility impaired, this is not a disabled friendly atmosphere. The staff was terrific but couldn’t change their inability to accommodate us in the main dining room.
We had to sit in outside addition , a poorly heated tent( it’s January just don’t open this part when it’s cold.) Our waitress although pleasant, was very unyielding in what she would or wouldn’t do. It seemed like anything we asked for was going above and beyond . Including salads, entrees , several of which were ordered but never materialized.
The food itself was very good. Once it got to us in purgatory. But it wasn’t worth the time, effort or expense of eating at Mathilde. There are some really charming French bistros in SF. This just isn’t one of them . At least it wasn’t for us
Mathilde's is one of our favorite neighborhood places to go. The staff is friendly and the food is awesome. Great for throwing a party too with their back patio. Definitely if you want great French food in San Francisco don't miss this place.
We visited on New Years Eve, so other nights might not be as busy and noisy. We had a reservation but it still took some time to get seated. The main room where we were was VERY crowded and our table for two was so close to the other tables that I could hear the lady sitting at the table next to me far more clearly than I could hear my boyfriend.
Service was pretty slow. Took a while to get anyone's attention and even getting something simple like a glass of water took about 20 minutes because they had to wash some glasses. We were done with dinner for quite some time before anyone asked if we wanted dessert. The profiteroles were delicious. Wouldn't go back just for that, though.
Pleasant if you're in the neighborhood. Not outstanding.
Amazing food and probably the best service I’ve ever seen.
Memorable NYE dinner! Everything was tasty and perfectly cooked. Cautiously enjoyed the onion soup as it was way too hot! Bone marrow would be perfect if it is less oily.
Ask for a table in the main area or the backyard for more prompt service.
Amazing & delicate food
Our family of 5 came for dinner the day after Christmas and enjoyed every dish we ordered. We felt like we were in Paris, as commented by other guests. The service was attentive and friendly, and the prices very reasonable for the quality and quantity of the food. We will definitely be back.
Lovely and charming French restaurant. Great service. Delicious garlic bread, onion soup, mussels and steak frites and Mitchell’s ice cream with chocolate sauce. Great evening
