Mathilde French Bistro
Excellent food and solid execution. No tourists! We both had the Duck confit which was delicious. The service was superb.
We had so much fun! From the owner to the fun waiters it was a great experience. Food and drinks were great!
Food was good . We had the Duck Confit and Coq au Vin . Both were decent portions and cooked well. Service was a bit impersonal . It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t attentive . I was charged for a whole bottle of wine when I had only ordered one glass . I’m glad I checked the bill . They also charge for bread which is a bit sad.
We sat in the patio which was not a good choice bec the plastic sheets were pulled down although it was a lovely evening.
Next time we go we’ll ask to be seated inside .
Appetizers were tiny and very overpriced.
Wines by glass tasted cheap; very overpriced.
Glasses of that quality wine should be $7 or less per glass. Anything more is embarassing & reflects poorly on the restaurant overall.
Dinner entree was good, not too overpriced.
We sat out in the patio and had some oysters, escargots, steak and duck confit. All the food was delicious except for the confit which was dry. Great service and overall an authentic fresh bistro experience
Excellent food as always. Beef bouguignon special was amazing. So good they ran out by 7:30pm.
The food and service is good.
The area isn't the best but it's okay.
I was seated right by a sliding door which I presume was the entrance to the restroom quite annoying seeing that it's a sliding barn door type.
I would definitely recommend this restaurant.
Great find recommended by a friend. The food was excellent and the service was superior. We only had an hour and a half prior to a show and our server made sure we were finished on time, not the typical long French meal.
the escargots were superb as were the mains. Their were 3 of us, ordered different courses and all meals were the best we had eaten in 3 weeks travelling through the States.
Plus a excellent recommendation for the red wine, a little expensive but we could have gone cheaper.
Money well spent.
The food was really good. It has nothing to do with Mathilde but most restaurants in US, they like to keep pouring your bottle of wine. I don't really like that. I bought a bottle of wine, and I will drink that slowly or fast as I please. No need for them to keep pouring as soon as I take a sip. And, for a French restaurant to charge $2.50 for 5 pieces of bread is kind a ridiculous. Bread should be free. I do understand, some people might abuse that but, first round should be free and after that if you ask for more bread, charge them. But, the food was awesome. Well worth it.
a Gem in SF as usual, amazing food, amazing garden patio. Really lovely dinner
The food was amazing. Service was perfect and everyone there is authentic French! The best meal I’ve had in 5 years!
Fabulous food and service
Very authentic cooking, upscale cuisine at moderate prices, can’t wait to go back.
The food is always good here, as is the wine selection. Very nice French Bistro feel. I've enjoyed many trips to Mathilde.
Thought the wait staff would be very French and snooty but they were surprisingly good at providing excellent levels of hospitality and service
Lovely atmospheric spot with live jazz and delicious French cuisine. The wine list is great and we loved the sassy waiter from Aix en Provence. Recommended for a romantic date night, or an intimate dinner with a small group of friends.
We had an exceptional dinner in a wonderful and well-run restaurant with delicious food and friendly, professional service. We'll be back.
An excellent French experience in terms of food and service. The mussels in a cream sauce were especially good. The front room of the restaurant was the only area open on a Wednesday evening and there too much noise from many conversations to talk clearly to the person across from you.
Nous avons passé un super moment et avons très très bien mangé.
Les toulonnais de passage à SF
Neighborhood is not elegant but the restaurant is an oasis of calm, deliciousness and good service. Salmon entree came with delicious side of risotto with asparagus and fava beans. Chocolate banana bread pudding with coconut ice cream was superb.
Excellent meal with friends! The chicken special was delicious and both of my friends enjoyed the duck entree. The beet and goat cheese salad was also a hit, along with the Floating Island dessert (the best we’ve ever had!). We’ll definitely be back.
I was looking for a restaurant that could accommodate 11 people, no easy feat, for a birthday dinner. Happily, my internet search found Mathilde's French Bistro. The service, the food, and the placement of our party in the back room was ideal. MFB offers a homey feel and a welcoming atmosphere. It's not an over the top designed restaurant - how many of those are in SF! Highly recommend and look forward to dining there again -- next time in a smaller group.
Charming restaurant with solid food. Causal and romantic
Charming restaurant, very good food, very professional waiters.
The food was great! My dinner date thought the service was lacking. I thought it was fine. Overall, I want to go back!😁
Great food , great sevice just “The best”
We had an amazing meal here. Maybe the best garlic bread I've ever had, same goes for the French onion soup. Scallops, risotto and brussel sprouts were also very good! Staff was attentive and friendly. They even went above and beyond when we forgot to take a copy of our receipt, making sure we got what we needed even after we left.
And prices are very reasonable! My friend and I really enjoyed our meal. My only regret is we didn't have room for dessert!
We can't wait to go back.
I was very happy to make a last minute reservation. The servers were helpful, funny and attentive.
The duck confit was delicious but the thinly sliced potatoes stuck together and were tough.
The butter lettuce salad was scrumptious and simple.
An overall delightful evening!
Just a wonderful little French bistro. Not super fancy, but the food is really good and the service is warm and welcoming. The potato puffs are a must-try, and the hanger steak was among the best I've had.
Its always perfect! Great menu, excellent staff who know the food and the wines. It is always a lovely experience.
Wonderful service and equally wonderful food. We were catching up with a friend we hadn’t seen in over a year, so we especially appreciated the atmosphere which allowed for great conversation.
Great neighborhood restaurant, with well priced, excellent food. Main room can be quite loud, but the heated patio is terrific.
Everything we ordered was excellent. We had 3 apps (shrimp, beef ravioles, puff pastry lobster special) and 2 entrees, scallops and filet. All were cooked perfectly and service was quick and attentive. Note that as great as the scallops were, there were 3 very large pieces, a turnip(?) puree and small serving of spinach. If you're hungry, order additional apps with it. Filet entree was an appropriate entrees size.
For dessert, we ordered the profiteroles and mousse. Both were very good. Profiteroles could have been shared as each had a good scoop of vanilla bean ice cream and lots of chocolate sauce, mousse was an individual serving.
Overall a great place and for French (inspired) cuisine, it was a great value for great food. Only minor downside is the menu is fairly small so if you go often, you can probably get through the menu in 3 visits or so.
Mathilde is a super solid French option in San Francisco. It's kind of under the radar... I discovered it walking down Folsom a few weeks ago, and it just looked so inviting. I finally got to try it last week and was really pleased. The ambiance is charming, the service was attentive and warm, the scallops were divine. There was a live band plunking away on their instruments. Our waiter was a handsome Frenchman, so that never hurts. I definitely will be back to sit in their back patio area when it stops raining.
Fabulous food! We’ll be back soon!!!
The onion soup and the steak were very delicious. The server was very friendly and the environment was nicely decorated. I would recommend it to anyone.
Service was not all Great with the hype . Waited a long time for a waiter to show up after being seated . Being a Thursday night I suppose it was a slow night and they started packing up while we were still eating . It was rather unpleasant and disappointing for a place with that reputation . The food However was excellent.
Food was very good (steak frites, salmon), prices seemed reasonable on menu (e.g. $24 steak frites) but three glasses of wine @ $13, tax and tip and you're up to $165 for two people - seemed high for what we got (but maybe I'm out of touch).
Great food, great service, great ambiance
I would go back, but we never got our waters or our bread. We finally had to flag down our server to get the check. I hope for better service next time, because the food was great.
