Mathilde French Bistro
We came to Mathilde to celebrate a birthday celebration. The overall experience was excellent. The food is exceptionally tasty. My family enjoyed all the appetizers (especially the baked bone marrow) as well as main course. Although the location is a bit away from the main attraction of Union Square, the ambience is quite nice inside. I will certainly come back.
Restaurant was very accommodating to my late request to increase from 6 seats to seven. I had my birthday dinner there where all dishes at the table where outstanding, all guests felt that they would revisit the restaurant again. I was surprised to learn that this restaurant has been in business for over 20 years.
Very romantic! We sat on the patio and the live music was a great addition. The wine by the glass selection was great and we really enjoyed it. The patio was absolutely gorgeous and the food was fantastic. Would definitely recommend to a friend
Service was quite good. A bit noisy as there was a large crown (30 people) near my table..but when their food came it became quiet.. Food was very good as was the service.
This was our favorite meal in San Fran. Service was amazing and the French onion soup was SPOT ON.
We got the charcuterie board and hanger steaks, both were fantastic. As was the bottle of Pinot noir. Really friendly wait staff as well.
We have been coming here for several years. The food is excellent. Many of the items on the charcuterie they make themselves. It’s the beginning of most of our meals! The entrees we have experienced have been fantastic, my favorites are the duck confit and Filet Mignon.
Mathilde is my new favorite restaurant in San Francisco. I attended a work dinner there and loved it, so returned again with some picky friends and they loved it too! The food is excellent and the service is wonderful. they have a great wine list and daily specials. I loved their crispy brussel sprouts and Scottish salmon.
Very good food. Authentic French restaurant. Good bank for the buck for SF standards.
Superb dinner. Had the special pork chop. Outstanding! Just a great dinner and wonderful service. I come back every time I’m in San Francisco! Beet salad is also one of my favorites!
simply charming!! lovely host and hostess
will certainly go back there!!
Cozy neighborhood French bistro with the feel of a mini trip to France! The food was truly delicious (esp the duck confit, soooo good). There is also covered outdoor seating in their courtyard out back which you wouldn't know unless you walked in. Will definitely return for a delicious dinner with friends, family, or date night.
They had a jazz trio playing out on the porch dining area where we sat and they were very talented. It was the perfect music for a lovely dining experience. Every member of our 6 party group enjoyed the shared appetizers and his/her meal. Everyone was pleased with the food, ambience and dining experience.
Great Service, Great Menu, Great Food! First time at this restaurant, had a wonderful evening all around. Will be back!
A gem of a restaurant, it was perfect for a date night. The authentic French food and bistro atmosphere is charming. The service is attentive and helpful. They even have a garden out back. We had the radicchio and endive salad, the duck breast with gastrique special, the halibut in a delicious coconut cream sauce and cheese plate for dessert. Only wine and beer, but some nice choices.
Wonderful little French Bistro. Food is delicious. Great menu, great presentation, great taste. Excellent wine selection. Service is absolutely phenomenal. Would highly recommend as a destination dining location in San Francisco.
What a wonderful restaurant. Only in town for a day, get lucky to find this place.
2nd visit in a little over a week. One of my favorite restaurants in SF.
Extra care (with my food allergies) and superlative service!
Excellent food and solid execution. No tourists! We both had the Duck confit which was delicious. The service was superb.
We had so much fun! From the owner to the fun waiters it was a great experience. Food and drinks were great!
Food was good . We had the Duck Confit and Coq au Vin . Both were decent portions and cooked well. Service was a bit impersonal . It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t attentive . I was charged for a whole bottle of wine when I had only ordered one glass . I’m glad I checked the bill . They also charge for bread which is a bit sad.
We sat in the patio which was not a good choice bec the plastic sheets were pulled down although it was a lovely evening.
Next time we go we’ll ask to be seated inside .
Appetizers were tiny and very overpriced.
Wines by glass tasted cheap; very overpriced.
Glasses of that quality wine should be $7 or less per glass. Anything more is embarassing & reflects poorly on the restaurant overall.
Dinner entree was good, not too overpriced.
We sat out in the patio and had some oysters, escargots, steak and duck confit. All the food was delicious except for the confit which was dry. Great service and overall an authentic fresh bistro experience
Excellent food as always. Beef bouguignon special was amazing. So good they ran out by 7:30pm.
The food and service is good.
The area isn't the best but it's okay.
I was seated right by a sliding door which I presume was the entrance to the restroom quite annoying seeing that it's a sliding barn door type.
I would definitely recommend this restaurant.
Great find recommended by a friend. The food was excellent and the service was superior. We only had an hour and a half prior to a show and our server made sure we were finished on time, not the typical long French meal.
the escargots were superb as were the mains. Their were 3 of us, ordered different courses and all meals were the best we had eaten in 3 weeks travelling through the States.
Plus a excellent recommendation for the red wine, a little expensive but we could have gone cheaper.
Money well spent.
The food was really good. It has nothing to do with Mathilde but most restaurants in US, they like to keep pouring your bottle of wine. I don't really like that. I bought a bottle of wine, and I will drink that slowly or fast as I please. No need for them to keep pouring as soon as I take a sip. And, for a French restaurant to charge $2.50 for 5 pieces of bread is kind a ridiculous. Bread should be free. I do understand, some people might abuse that but, first round should be free and after that if you ask for more bread, charge them. But, the food was awesome. Well worth it.
a Gem in SF as usual, amazing food, amazing garden patio. Really lovely dinner
The food was amazing. Service was perfect and everyone there is authentic French! The best meal I’ve had in 5 years!
Fabulous food and service
Very authentic cooking, upscale cuisine at moderate prices, can’t wait to go back.
The food is always good here, as is the wine selection. Very nice French Bistro feel. I've enjoyed many trips to Mathilde.
Thought the wait staff would be very French and snooty but they were surprisingly good at providing excellent levels of hospitality and service
Lovely atmospheric spot with live jazz and delicious French cuisine. The wine list is great and we loved the sassy waiter from Aix en Provence. Recommended for a romantic date night, or an intimate dinner with a small group of friends.
We had an exceptional dinner in a wonderful and well-run restaurant with delicious food and friendly, professional service. We'll be back.
An excellent French experience in terms of food and service. The mussels in a cream sauce were especially good. The front room of the restaurant was the only area open on a Wednesday evening and there too much noise from many conversations to talk clearly to the person across from you.
Nous avons passé un super moment et avons très très bien mangé.
Les toulonnais de passage à SF
Neighborhood is not elegant but the restaurant is an oasis of calm, deliciousness and good service. Salmon entree came with delicious side of risotto with asparagus and fava beans. Chocolate banana bread pudding with coconut ice cream was superb.
Excellent meal with friends! The chicken special was delicious and both of my friends enjoyed the duck entree. The beet and goat cheese salad was also a hit, along with the Floating Island dessert (the best we’ve ever had!). We’ll definitely be back.
